n the fourth Sunday of Easter in each of the three O lectionary cycles the Gospel is taken from the tenth chapter of the Gospel of John. While our Gospel is short, to fully grasp its meaning it is important to understand the context of what happened both before and after it. This chapter follows Jesus' healing of the man born blind and the rejection of this miracle by Jewish leaders who question Jesus' authority to heal. It is a moment of tension and conflict – “If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” (Jn 10:24) – and, in response to their challenge, Jesus asserts his unity with the Father and calls himself the Good Shepherd. The lines following our Gospel show how much they were angered and their attempt to stone and arrest Jesus (Jn 10:31 and 10:39). Why would they be so upset at this analogy? His words criticize the Pharisees and other Jewish leaders essentially saying you study God’s Word, but don’t recognize Him in my actions. He escapes but this controversy with the religious leaders will continue until Jesus' death. Today's Gospel speaks to the relationship between Jesus and the Father. Jesus identifies so closely with the Father that He tells us that they are not just close, but actually one! Therefore, to know Jesus is to know the Father. Listening to Jesus puts us directly into contact with Please join us in praying God the Father. However, the image (St. Catherine of Sienna) of God as a Shepherd is ancient and powerful, and the image of May 18th (St. Vincent de Paul) Jesus as the Good Shepherd caring for His followers (as His sheep) has endured over the centuries. This beautiful metaphor of our faith (We are praying a Novena for nine consecutive Sundays) community speaks to us about the protection, security, and care that Prayer to the Holy Spirit shepherds represent for their sheep. People of almost every culture have been consoled by this image and have prayed with all their hearts: O Holy Spirit, soul of my soul, I adore you. MAY - MONTH OF MARY Catholics dedicate the month of May to the Blessed Virgin Mary. May is always part of the Easter Season, fifty days of celebrating the Resurrection of Our Lord; and a season we wait for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

Last week we asked do you remember singing the hymn — “Mary we crown thee with blossoms today, Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May.” Some have responded they now can’t get the hymn out of their head! This week’s question: How many houses have you passed in Franklin Square and beyond last month or this month that have a statue of Mary in the front yard? Mary is known to people around the world as the Mother of God, Mother of Jesus Christ and Mother of our Savior; how many other titles does she have? She is the Patron of Americas and Mother to us all. Continue to pray to her this month.

Join us following 9:30AM Mass Sunday, May 19, Crowning of Mary with a procession led by our First Communicants to grotto in front of Rectory for prayer and crowning (weather permitting, otherwise held indoors).

Take time this month to stop and offer prayer in front of one of our beautiful statues found in our Church, the Sienna Center, our Parish Activity Complex and outside around our parish property. Ask Mary to intercede for us with her Son Jesus in thanksgiving for all mothers and children here and throughout the world!
