We are incredibly proud of your accomplishments and are grateful that you’ve taken time to stay in touch. This department will always be your home away from home, and you’re welcome to come back anytime. Speaking of coming back to campus, what would you think of an alumni reunion event? Seriously, would you make the trek back to Ames for the chance to meet up with your former classmates? If so, I’d like to hear from you. I’ve thought about this for several years now, and perhaps the time is right to launch a brand new tradition…the Cyclone Horticulture Alumni Weekend. If we were to plan this party, what time of year would work best? Summer? Maybe during the fall football season? What kind of events should be included in this alumni event/weekend? I look forward to your comments and suggestions. I am pleased to report that your Department of Horticulture is in excellent condition. Compared to other departments of horticulture around the country, our student numbers (undergraduate and graduate) are robust, our facilities complement and enhance the overall learning experience for our students, and our team of faculty and lecturers embrace their responsibilities as instructors, counselors, and mentors.

Bibliography 273 Abstract The nation-state is now the dominant form of sovereign statehood, however, a century and a half ago the political map of Europe comprised only a handful of sovereign states, very few of them nations in the modern sense. Balkan historiography often tends to minimize the complexity of nation-building, either by referring to the national community as to a monolithic and homogenous unit, or simply by neglecting different social groups whose consciousness varied depending on region, gender and generation. Further, Bulgarian and Serbian historiography pay far more attention to the problem of "how" and "why" certain events have happened than to the emergence of national consciousness of the Balkan peoples as a complex and durable process of mental evolution. This dissertation on the concept of nationality in which most Bulgarians and Serbs were educated and socialized examines how the modern idea of nationhood was disseminated among the ordinary people and it presents the complicated process of national indoctrination carried out by various state institutions.

His Eminence served with the concelebration of Bishops: Lukijan of Osijek Polje and Baranja, Jovan of Shumadia, Irinej of Australia and New Zealand, Vicar Bishop of Teodosije of Lipljan and Antonije of Moravica. After the Holy Liturgy Bishops gathered at the Patriarchate court. The session was preceded by consultations before the election procedure. At the Election assembly Bishop Lavrentije of Shabac presided, the oldest bishop in the ordination of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The Holy Assembly of Bishops has 44 members, and 34 bishops met the requirements to be nominated as the new Patriarch of Serbia. By the secret ballot bishops proposed candidates, out of which three bishops were on the shortlist, who received more than half of the votes of the members of the Election assembly. In the first round the candidate for Patriarch became the Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral, in the second round the Bishop Irinej of Nis, and a third candidate was elected in the fourth round, and that was Bishop Irinej of Bachka. These three candidates have received more that a half votes during the four rounds of voting.

A A U S during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, Archimandrite B Sebastian Dabovich has the distinction of being the first person born in the United States of America to be ordained as an Orthodox priest, 1 and also the first native-born American to be tonsured as an Orthodox monk. His greatest distinction, however, lies in the tremen- dous apostolic, pastoral, and literary work that he accomplished dur- ing the forty-eight years of his priestly ministry. Known as the “Father of Serbian Orthodoxy in America,” 2 he was responsible for the found- ing of the first Serbian churches in the New World. This, however, was only one part of his life’s work, for he tirelessly and zealously sought to spread the Orthodox Faith to all peoples, wherever he was called. He was an Orthodox apostle of universal significance. Describing the vast scope of Fr.     IN THE NAME OF THE HOLY AND LIFEGIVING TRINITY! We, the clergy, monastics, and representatives of the people of God, ordained and elected members to the Annual Assembly of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Eastern America, of the Serbian Orthodox Church, have gathered together at the Church of Saint Sava of Serbia in the God-protected City of Saint Petersburg, Florida on February 27 and 28, in the Year of Our Lord 2020. Today, as we celebrate the memory of Saint Onesimus, Apostle of the Seventy, and Venerable Paphnutius the Recluse of the Kiev Caves, the Holy Spirit has gathered us in the community of the Body of Christ that He might bring us closer to our Heavenly Father. Having announced the fullness of God’s Church, gathered around our Bishop, Father and Archpastor Irinej, we greet the fullness of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the person of His Holiness, the Archbishop of Pec, Metropolitan of Belgrade-Karlovac, and Serbian Patriarch Irinej and his Delegation. We also greet the members of the Episcopal Council of the Serbian Orthodox Church in North, Central and South America, as well as the members of the Central Church Council of the Serbian Orthodox Dioceses in the United States of America, Canada, and Central and South America. From this place we greet His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Alexander, Heir to the Throne, and his wife, Her Royal Highness Princess Katherine. We express our steadfast support for His Grace our Bishop Irinej, the Diocesan Council and the Diocesan Executive Board of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Eastern America, as well as the leadership of our Holy Church in our Serbian Fatherland, in the Region, and in the Diaspora, and to all persons of good will.

    Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia THE SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH AND THE NEW SERBIAN IDENTITY Belgrade, 2006 This Study is a part of a larger Project "Religion and Society," realized with the assistance of the Heinrich Böll Foundation Historical Confusion At the turn of the penultimate decade of the 20th century to the last, the world was shocked by the (out-of-court) pronouncement of the death verdict for an artist, that is, an author by the leader of a theocratic regime, on the grounds that his book insulted one religion or, to be more exact, Islam and all Muslims. Naturally, it is the question of the famous Rushdie affair. According to the leader of the Iranian revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini, the novel “Satanic Verses” by Salman Rushdie was blasphemous and the author deserved to be sentenced to death by a fatwa. This case - which has not been closed to this day - demonstrated in a radical way the seriousness and complexity of the challenge which is posed by the living political force of religious fundamentalism(s) to the global aspirations of the concept of liberal capitalist democracy, whose basic postulates are a secular state and secular society. The fall of the Berlin Wall that same year (1989) marked symbolically the end of an era in the international relations and the collapse of an ideological- political project. In other words, the circumstances that had a decisive influence on the formation of the Yugoslav and Serbian society in the post- World War II period were pushed into history. Time has told that the mentioned changes caused a tragic historical confusion in Yugoslavia and in Serbia, primarily due to the unreadiness of the Yugoslav and, in particular, Serbian elites to understand and adequately respond to the challenges of the new era.
