Bibliography 273 Abstract The nation-state is now the dominant form of sovereign statehood, however, a century and a half ago the political map of Europe comprised only a handful of sovereign states, very few of them nations in the modern sense. Balkan historiography often tends to minimize the complexity of nation-building, either by referring to the national community as to a monolithic and homogenous unit, or simply by neglecting different social groups whose consciousness varied depending on region, gender and generation. Further, Bulgarian and Serbian historiography pay far more attention to the problem of "how" and "why" certain events have happened than to the emergence of national consciousness of the Balkan peoples as a complex and durable process of mental evolution. This dissertation on the concept of nationality in which most Bulgarians and Serbs were educated and socialized examines how the modern idea of nationhood was disseminated among the ordinary people and it presents the complicated process of national indoctrination carried out by various state institutions.

Places of Reconciliation and Contestation: The Reconstruction and Protection of Serbian Orthodox Religious Sites in Kosovo Bianca Maier 3770427 Utrecht University 30 July 2012 A Thesis submitted to the Board of Examiners in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts in Conflict Studies & Human Rights Name of Supervisor: Dr. Jolle Demmers Date of Submission: 30 July 2012 Programme trajectory followed: Internship (15 ECTS), Research and Thesis Writing (15 ECTS) Word Count: 14,894 words Abstract This thesis seeks to contribute to a stronger engagement with the spatial dimension of peacebuilding and reconciliation. Providing a culturally-geographic approach to the placemaking activities in contemporary Kosovo, it analyses the reconstruction and physical as well as legal protection of Serbian Orthodox religious sites with regard to their limits and challenges in producing a reconciliatory sense of place. Telling the story of exemplary churches and monasteries, it addresses the influencing factors of scale and timing, accessibility, public awareness, history, demography and personal attitude. Eventually, the thesis advocates a people-centred and interactional approach to reconstruction and protection, suggesting that enlivenment and exchange may provide the missing link between physical and societal transformations. • New Churches in the Cities of Serbia and Site Selection for Their Construction
PRACE GEOGRAfICzNE, zeszyt 137 Instytut Geografii i Gospodarki Przestrzennej UJ Kraków 2014, 37 – 49 doi : 10.4467/20833113PG.14.008.2153 New churches iN the cities of serbia aNd site selectioN for their coNstructioN Milan Spasojević, Milica Milojević Abstract : New church construction in the cities of Serbia in the last 25 years is a consequence of restrictions and the marginalisation of religion during the pre-1989 socialist period. In the period from 1945 to 1989, almost no new churches were built, and urban planners in Serbia have not developed appropriate selection criteria for the location of new religious buildings. Religious buildings built in the period after 1990 were built on sites that were selected ad hoc without considering the needs of believers and churches. In the last 25 years, more than 400 churches have been built in rural areas and cities, which influenced the reshaping of the cultural landscape. In this paper, attention is given to determining the required number of churches, their location, and the distribution of the urban structure in relation to various relevant factors. The specific spatial organisation of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the homeland and in the diaspora is emphasized. Keywords : Serbian Orthodox Church, new church construction, church location, religious tourism, religious landscape introduction Since the 1990s the Serbian Orthodox Church ( S O C ) has erected and/or restored about 500 churches and monasteries. Despite the current economic crisis, church building has experienced a renaissance in recent decades in all areas where the Orthodox Church has its own eparchy – Montenegro, Republic of Srpska, Western European countries, North America and Australia.

ARCHITECTURAL WORK OF ALEKSANDAR DEROKO – BEAUTY OF EMOTIONAL CREATIVITY A B S T R A C T This paper studies significant and forgotten, but not less important, built and unrealised designs by Serbian architect Aleksandar Deroko. It seeks to achieve a continuous view in dealing with Deroko`s architectural work versus the historical discontinuity of political, territorial-geographic and social circumstances. It is impossible to separate Deroko as an architect from Deroko as a scholar, researcher, historian of architecture and art, an academic professor, painter, artist, writer, chronicler of his time, protector, conservator and historiographer of Serbian cultural heritage. The main aim of this paper is to apply comprehensive research approach within which his work in the field of architectural design will be considered in a complementary and pluralistic way. Deroko’s architectural projects examined in their details and altogether represent distillate of Deroko’s erudite personality, which casts shadow on relevant questions of Serbian history of architecture placement: How to understand it, observe and examine it, from Yugoslav or Serbian perspective, from the position of continuity or discontinuity, through characteristics of general or particular? SUBMITTED TO THE BOSTON COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NARRATIVE AND NATIONHOOD: THE BATTLE OF KOSOVO By: Anna Ringheiser HONORS THESIS MAY 2018 ADVISOR: PROFESSOR ALI BANUAZIZI 2 ABSTRACT: This thesis explores the centrality of myth in the master narrative of Serbian ethno-nationalism that erupted in the late 1980s through the 1990s. By looking at Serbian folk epics depicting the battle of Kosovo, this thesis examines the role of myth as a part of Serbian identity and culture. The way the myth of the battle of Kosovo is remembered is a way of reconstructing the past through using themes in the myth to manipulate public memory and political consciousness. This thesis shows that while myth represents a key construction of a master national narrative, the narrative does not represent the stories of all members of the nation. The theoretical and official “history” of a nation is separate from the lived history of individuals. The last chapter uses gender as a lens to examine the master national stemming from the Kosovo myth, showing how the national master narrative connects to the “myth of the all pervasive patriarchy” in how history is understood. The last chapter also shows how the themes of nationalism in the myth of Kosovo did not only exist on a theoretical gendered level, but in how state actors controlled or attempted to control women’s bodies as part of the nationalist project.

  • Byzantine Style in the Architecture of Orthodox Countries Second Half of Xix - Middle of Xx Century
European Journal of Science and Theology, December 2014, Vol.10, No.6, 267-280 _______________________________________________________________________ BYZANTINE STYLE IN THE ARCHITECTURE OF ORTHODOX COUNTRIES SECOND HALF OF XIX - MIDDLE OF XX CENTURY Evgeniya Mihaylovna Kishkinova* Rostov State University of Civil Engineering, Socialist str 162, Rostov-na-Donu, 344022, Russia (Received 3 October 2014, revised 11 October 2014) Abstract Byzantine style in the architecture of Orthodox countries, in spite of a certain similarity of the causes that created an interest to the Byzantine heritage, historical, cultural and religious communities, as well as the mutual influence, within each national tradition has found specific features, in varying degrees obeying the changing stages of evolution of architecture from eclecticism to functionalism and the effects of centuries of experience of one or other national school of architecture. The material presented in this paper suggests the existence of regional variants of a single style, due to the particularities of a certain cultural and historical context. Keywords: architecture, Byzantine style, historicism, national romanticism 1. Introduction Neo-Byzantine style, originated in the Romantic period and announced itself as one of the new styles of historicism over the middle of XIX - the middle of XX centuries, had been widely used in the architectural practice in Europe and North America. In recent decades, the Byzantine style attracts the attention of historians of architecture in different countries. We should first mention the works of Y.R. Savelev [1], M. Koeva [2], A. Kadievich [3] and R. Nemteanu [4]. Manifesting itself mainly in temple architecture, this style has left the most numerous monuments in Orthodox countries, where the interest in it has been caused by the growth of national consciousness and was supported by researches of their own and Byzantine medieval architecture.
