Über Tonträger oder auf Konzerten kam ich mit vielen Spielarten des Rock in Berührung. Dabei ist mir aufgefallen, wie unterschiedlich sich Performance, Text und Kontext auf meine Wahrnehmung auswirkten. Es schien mir, als ob dabei die innere Einstellung des Protagonisten einen großen Einfluss auf die Rezeption von Musik hat – was sich im Rock noch augenscheinlicher niederschlug als in anderen Ausdrucksformen populärer Musik. Einerseits vom persönlichen Ausdruck des Interpreten bzw. der Aussage und Ausstrahlung seiner Musik angetan, riefen andere Darbietungen in diesen Punkten Enttäuschung in mir hervor. Mit dem Studium der Musikwissenschaft, besonders des Seminars Musikwissenschaft und Popularmusik, entstand ein persönliches Interesse, herauszufinden, ob und inwieweit bestimmte Strömungen des Rock sich hinsichtlich musikalischer, ideologischer und soziologischer Kriterien unterscheiden und welchen Wert bzw. Unwert sie für die Gesellschaft besitzen. Auch die Kritik an der vielleicht authentischsten Ausdrucksform der (jugendlichen) Gesellschaft veranlasste mich, jene Aspekte, hier auf Christian Rock bezogen, auf wissenschaftlicher Ebene zu beleuchten. Mein Dank gilt in erster Linie meiner Professorin Linda Maria Koldau, die mir in inhaltlichen sowie formalen Fragen für die Zeit meines Schreibens zur Verfügung stand. -
Music Bread and Wine
It's early April and we're I1ltllliTIg a little behind schedule, but we expect where they are. That may involve dances, concerts, overnighters, to have Issue 9 out before Cornerstone. The four historical vignettes presented demonstrate the signifi- cance of Australia in the wider global history of the “cult wars” and some of the local societal reactions occasioned by various home grown and inter- national new religious movements that have proved controversial. This article identifies a series of the key episodes and periods that might serve as historical landmarks for the writing of a more fulsome history of new reli- gions in Australia, introduces to a scholarly audience some of the important individuals involved in these Australian controversies, and highlights the key new religions and cult-watching groups whose interactions have col- lectively shaped the Australian societal response over this period. In this article, I argue that late twentieth-century satanic ritual abuse discourse helped perpetuate intolerance toward non-Christian religions and foreclose conditions of possibility for benign religious difference in the United States. Psychological diagnoses related to satanic ritual abuse fueled popular anxieties regarding the sexual peril of American minority religions. Perpetuating diagnoses of satanic ritual abuse reinforced popular suspicions that religious minorities are dangerous, particularly when it comes to matters of sexuality. Pizzagate 1.0: The Satanic Ritual Abuse Panic of the 1980s Amanda Pursell University at Buffalo When the modern American thinks of moral panics, we tend to think of sex, drugs, and alcohol. News reports of “rainbow parties,” “vodka tampons,” and strange new drugs that turn ordinary teens into face eating zombies flash through our minds. We like to think we’ve gone beyond fears of demonic forces lurking in the night, but that isn’t necessarily true. From the Salem witch trial to today, moral panics tend to be spiritual in nature, and often result in witch hunts that have lingering effects on not just the individuals accused, but society itself.1 These panics usually occur in periods of great social change and economic stress and work as a release valve.2 After the Great Depression and Word War 2, a witch hunt, in the “Red” and “Lavender” scares of the 1950s ruined the lives of countless people who were blacklisted for their suspected “Communistic” leanings and sexual preferences. In the 1980s, an economic downturn, the civil rights movement, and the culture wars that began in the 1960s came together in the form of the Satanic Panic. Fueled by tabloid stories of child abductions, sexual abuse, cults, and “recovered memories,” the very real threat of pedophilia collided with the spiritual threat of a vast network of Satanist lurking in America’s heartland, praying on children left in their care. This panic took the country by storm for several years, lead to the most expensive trial in American history, and left countless lives destroyed, just to fizzle out as quickly as it started. -

Appendix A: Memory Myths and Realities Myth 1. You must identify the root cause of your unhappiness from the past in order to heal and be happy in the present. Reality 1. It is unfortunately the normal human lot to be frustrated and unhappy at various points in your life. There is no magic pill to make you happy, and your attitude in the present is much more the issue than anything that happened to you in the past. Myth 2. Checklists of “symptoms” are reliable tools to identify disorders. Reality 2. Beware of symptom checklists, particularly if they apply to nearly everyone in the general population. At one time or another, most people experience depres- sion, troubled relationships, ambivalence toward family members, and low self- esteem. These are not necessarily “symptoms” of anything other than the human condition. Myth 3. You can trust any therapist who seems compassionate, warm, wise, and caring. You do not need to ask about credentials, experience, training, philosophy, treat- ment approach, or techniques. Reality 3. Just because a therapist is warm and caring does not mean that he or she is com- petent or can help you. Training, philosophy, and treatment modalities are extremely important. Therapists who dwell unceasingly on your past are unlikely to help you cope with your present-day problems. Therapy should challenge you to change your way of thinking about and dealing with the present-day conflicts that sent you to therapy in the first place. © The Author(s) 2017 421 M.
