The four historical vignettes presented demonstrate the signifi- cance of Australia in the wider global history of the “cult wars” and some of the local societal reactions occasioned by various home grown and inter- national new religious movements that have proved controversial. This article identifies a series of the key episodes and periods that might serve as historical landmarks for the writing of a more fulsome history of new reli- gions in Australia, introduces to a scholarly audience some of the important individuals involved in these Australian controversies, and highlights the key new religions and cult-watching groups whose interactions have col- lectively shaped the Australian societal response over this period. In this article, I argue that late twentieth-century satanic ritual abuse discourse helped perpetuate intolerance toward non-Christian religions and foreclose conditions of possibility for benign religious difference in the United States. Psychological diagnoses related to satanic ritual abuse fueled popular anxieties regarding the sexual peril of American minority religions. Perpetuating diagnoses of satanic ritual abuse reinforced popular suspicions that religious minorities are dangerous, particularly when it comes to matters of sexuality.     Pizzagate 1.0: The Satanic Ritual Abuse Panic of the 1980s Amanda Pursell University at Buffalo When the modern American thinks of moral panics, we tend to think of sex, drugs, and alcohol. News reports of “rainbow parties,” “vodka tampons,” and strange new drugs that turn ordinary teens into face eating zombies flash through our minds. We like to think we’ve gone beyond fears of demonic forces lurking in the night, but that isn’t necessarily true. From the Salem witch trial to today, moral panics tend to be spiritual in nature, and often result in witch hunts that have lingering effects on not just the individuals accused, but society itself.1 These panics usually occur in periods of great social change and economic stress and work as a release valve.2 After the Great Depression and Word War 2, a witch hunt, in the “Red” and “Lavender” scares of the 1950s ruined the lives of countless people who were blacklisted for their suspected “Communistic” leanings and sexual preferences. In the 1980s, an economic downturn, the civil rights movement, and the culture wars that began in the 1960s came together in the form of the Satanic Panic. Fueled by tabloid stories of child abductions, sexual abuse, cults, and “recovered memories,” the very real threat of pedophilia collided with the spiritual threat of a vast network of Satanist lurking in America’s heartland, praying on children left in their care. This panic took the country by storm for several years, lead to the most expensive trial in American history, and left countless lives destroyed, just to fizzle out as quickly as it started.

    Appendix A: Memory Myths and Realities Myth 1. You must identify the root cause of your unhappiness from the past in order to heal and be happy in the present. Reality 1. It is unfortunately the normal human lot to be frustrated and unhappy at various points in your life. There is no magic pill to make you happy, and your attitude in the present is much more the issue than anything that happened to you in the past. Myth 2. Checklists of “symptoms” are reliable tools to identify disorders. Reality 2. Beware of symptom checklists, particularly if they apply to nearly everyone in the general population. At one time or another, most people experience depres- sion, troubled relationships, ambivalence toward family members, and low self- esteem. These are not necessarily “symptoms” of anything other than the human condition. Myth 3. You can trust any therapist who seems compassionate, warm, wise, and caring. You do not need to ask about credentials, experience, training, philosophy, treat- ment approach, or techniques. Reality 3. Just because a therapist is warm and caring does not mean that he or she is com- petent or can help you. Training, philosophy, and treatment modalities are extremely important. Therapists who dwell unceasingly on your past are unlikely to help you cope with your present-day problems. According to the rumors, he was donating 35 percent of the restaurant chain’s profits to the Church of Satan. A few years later, in 1982, rumors spread that the Proctor and Gamble logo depicting a moon and star was a satanic symbol. It was alleged that the company president, “a major twentieth-century Satanist,” also appeared on the Phil Donahue show confessing that all the company profits went to the Church of Satan. Even though the events never occurred—Kroc had appeared on the Phil Donahue show, but only to promote his book—rumors of Satanic activities continue. An Internet search of the names of these com- panies with the added word “Satan” reveals how persistent these rumors are. Who is this Satan who supposedly profits from major corporate contri- butions? Close your eyes and try to picture what Satan might look like. What do you see? Do you see a man in red tights with a forked tail, cloven hooves, horns on his head, and holding a pitchfork?—something akin to the logo found on cans of Underwood Deviled Ham Spread? If so, such a modern appearance is rooted in an early attempt of Christianity to demonize the gods of those they considered pagans.

As revealed in a cache of emails stolen by the Russian government and published by WikiLeaks, Hillary Clinton’s campaign chair John Podesta had ingested breast milk, semen, menstrual blood, and urine during a bizarre occult ritual known as a “spirit dinner.” A shadowy cabal of high-profile figures had attended the satanic smorgasbord. As if anyone needed any more proof, the Clinton campaign was, dramatic pause, in league with the devil. So the story went, anyway. The reality of the spirit dinner is much more banal (save for the fact that the emails were procured through a coordinated effort by a hostile foreign power to subvert American democracy, but that’s just details). John Podesta had received a message from his brother Tony, an art collector. Tony told John that performance artist Marina Abramović—a friend of Tony’s—had invited him and John to a “spirit cooking” dinner. “Spirit cooking” was a reference to Abramović’s 1997 art installation of the same name, which featured, among other jarring imagery, recipes written on gallery walls in what appeared to be blood. John never responded to the invitation. A later exchange between Tony and John revealed that John hadn’t attended the dinner, but that didn’t matter.

These are but a few of the thousands of horrifying stories circulating throughout the United Stat es and abroad.1 Some true believers (see glossary) in satanic ritual abuse (SRA) say that more than 100,000 "adult survivors" have undergone therapy and "remembered" these horrible abuses.2 Others more than double this number. 3 These terrifying accounts are linked to the current public concern about child abductions by strangers, which true believers claim number in the thousands annually. 4 True believers say the conspiracy5 is almost invincible, covers the nation (if not the world), and involves key power players in the courts, education, politics, religion, and society in general. True believers provide unconditional support to alleged adult survivors whose therapeutically recovered "memories" typically implicate their elderly parents in heinous crimes including murder, cannibalism, sexual torture, incest, and bestiality.

Baptist bookstores suspend sale Baptist Press of Hike Warnke's 'Satan Seller' By Art Toalston 9/2/92 NASHVILLE (BP)--The Southern Baptist Sunday School Board's bookstore chain has suspended sales of "The Satan Seller" by popular youth speaker and comedian Mike Warnke. The action by Baptist Book Stores was announced after questions erupted this summer concerning the truthfulness of Warnke's testimony and the financial ethics of his Burgin. Ky. ,-based ministry. A Chicago-based evangelical magazine, Cornerstone, carried a 12-page investigative report in its July-August issue uncovering, it said, "serious doubts" about Warnke's account of converting from satanism to Christ, first published in 1973 in "The Satan Seller." Warnke, 47, responded with a 12-page reaffirmation of his testimony.
