Music Bread and Wine It's early April and we're I1ltllliTIg a little behind schedule, but we expect where they are. In May of this year they moved into their new offices and, when the necessary funds corne in, they will construct a 230-seat thrust theatre and shop on the site. A theatre, though--like a church--is more than a building. According to Alan Sapp, associate artistic director and director of ANGELS FALL, Taproot is in the midst of another kind o{transition. In the past, 75 % of their audience has come from the churches; but that will change, Sapp hopes, as Taproot mounts more and more plays outside the typical Christian fare. "We believe the Lord wants us to be doing theatre that bothers people," Sapp says, "plays that cause them to ask questions about their lives, plays that Christians can bring friends to see--friends that would never darken the door of a church." ANGELS FALL is a good example. "I see a lot of Lanford Wilson in the Professor," Sapp remarks. "An agnostic with vague memories of religion that have little relevance to his present problems" Sapp was first drawn to the play by the character of Father Doherty. Near the end of Act Two, Father Doherty reads his own question in Revelations: "Seeing that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness?" Über Tonträger oder auf Konzerten kam ich mit vielen Spielarten des Rock in Berührung. Dabei ist mir aufgefallen, wie unterschiedlich sich Performance, Text und Kontext auf meine Wahrnehmung auswirkten. Es schien mir, als ob dabei die innere Einstellung des Protagonisten einen großen Einfluss auf die Rezeption von Musik hat – was sich im Rock noch augenscheinlicher niederschlug als in anderen Ausdrucksformen populärer Musik. Einerseits vom persönlichen Ausdruck des Interpreten bzw. der Aussage und Ausstrahlung seiner Musik angetan, riefen andere Darbietungen in diesen Punkten Enttäuschung in mir hervor. Mit dem Studium der Musikwissenschaft, besonders des Seminars Musikwissenschaft und Popularmusik, entstand ein persönliches Interesse, herauszufinden, ob und inwieweit bestimmte Strömungen des Rock sich hinsichtlich musikalischer, ideologischer und soziologischer Kriterien unterscheiden und welchen Wert bzw. Unwert sie für die Gesellschaft besitzen. Auch die Kritik an der vielleicht authentischsten Ausdrucksform der (jugendlichen) Gesellschaft veranlasste mich, jene Aspekte, hier auf Christian Rock bezogen, auf wissenschaftlicher Ebene zu beleuchten. The 3,000 people crammed into this tent are tingling with trepidation and illicit thrills: Will David Bazan . swear out loud tonight? If this were one of the punk clubs that Bazan's band, Pedro the Lion, usually finds itself in, the bearded 28-year-old singer would have to do a lot more than cuss to raise even a single pierced eyebrow. But as a performer at the Cornerstone Festival, an annual Christian-rock expo in western Illinois that took place over the weekend, Bazan is expected to follow the same rules as the attendees -- no drugs or alcohol, and while profanity isn't specifically banned, it's certainly not encouraged. Bazan has already blown through a gallon jug of water mixed with vodka, so what's one more shattered taboo? "You were too busy steering the conversation toward the Lord," he sings, "to hear the voice of the Spirit begging you to shut the [expletive] up." A slight squeal goes up, and then some objects fly at the stage. They're a few pairs of ladies' underwear. It probably goes without saying that not many of the festival's 25,000 attendees expected such a scene when they paid their $110 admission (which includes camping, showers and all the music they can handle), and it's an anomaly even for Cornerstone, despite its reputation as a relatively liberal Christian event.

On the cover is a ghastly, hellish figure leering and drooling, apparently over the prospects of bringing Johnny home for a visit. The song titles leave little to be imagined. They speak of violence, sadistic perversion, satanism, and irrepressible sex. The names of Johnny's other musical artists are also alarming: Black Sabbath, Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, AC-DC, and KISS, which you have been told stands for Kids in Satan's Service. Their songs offer screaming, driving music which advocates just about everything Johnny ought to avoid, from homosexual perversion to satanic sacrifice, from suicide to dabbling in drugs. Then, providentially it seems, one stumbles upon a flier promoting a dance for high school students at the church. Contemporary Christian musicians will be featured with cuts from Amy Grant, RezBand, Stryper, Keith Green, and more. Subsequently one discovers that an entire genre of music is available to Johnny at the local Christian bookstore. Johnny can have a heavy metal sound, a break-dance beat, a mellow folk sound, Country- Western, Rhythm and Blues, an Elvis 'fifties sound, or basically anything he wants without the ungodly lyrics.

    MUSIC THAT GLORIFIES GOD 2 Peter 2:1-3 “… there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. “And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. “And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you …” “… The most brutal, degenerate, vicious form of expression it has been my misfortune to hear – naturally, I refer to the bulk of rock and roll. It fosters almost totally negative and destructive reactions in young people. It smells phony and false. It is sung, played and written for the most part by cretinous goons and, by means of its almost imbecilic reiterations and sly – lewd – in plain fact, dirty lyrics, and, as I said before, it manages to be the martial music of the earth. This rancid aphrodisiac I deplore … .” The above is not a quote from a fundamentalist preacher, but from old “blue eyes” himself, Frank Sinatra, in an article written during the fifties and quoted in the Detroit Free Press (April 18, 1987). Since that time the rock genre has become the dominant musical force in American culture. Without question rock is nearly synonymous with the youth culture. Professor Allan Bloom of the University of Chicago sums it up in his best-seller The Closing of The American Mind: “Though students do not have books, they most emphatically do have music. Nothing is more singular about this generation than its addiction to music.
