The “Farm:” An Inflatable Centrifuge Biology Research Module on the International Space Station M.Thangavelu1, L. Simurda2 As the sole manned laboratory in Low Earth Orbit, permanently operating in microgravity and largely unprotected by the Earth's atmosphere, the International Space Station serves as an unparalleled platform for studying the effects of low or zero-gravity and the space radiation environment on biological systems as well as developing, testing and certifying sturdy and reliable systems for long duration missions such as ambitious interplanetary expeditions planned for the future. Earth- bound research, automated research aboard satellites and short missions into low- altitude orbits cannot replicate long-term ISS experiments. Abandoning or de- orbiting the station, even in 2020, leaves the international scientific and engineering community bereft of a manned station in orbit and destroys any opportunity for conducting long-term microgravity and radiation experiments requiring human oversight in space. The United States should invest in extending the station's life by a minimum of 15 years from present by attaching an inflatable "Farm" centrifuge module to equip biologists, psychologists and engineers with the tools required to investigate these questions and more. At a time when humankind has only begun exploring the effects of the space environment on biological systems, it is essential that we not abandon the only empirical research facility in operation today and instead begin vigorously pursuing research in this area that is of vital importance to all humanity, not only in the basic and applied sciences but also in international collaboration. I. Introduction In June 2010, President Barack Obama announced a novel vision for NASA and proposed extending the life of the International Space Station (ISS) until at least 2020. -

ICES-2020-333 Development of the Crew Dragon ECLSS Jason Silverman1, Andrew Irby2, and Theodore Agerton3 Space Exploration Technologies, Hawthorne, California, 90250 SpaceX designed the Crew Dragon spacecraft to be the safest ever flown and to restore the ability of the United States to launch astronauts. One of the key systems required for human flight is the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS), which was designed to work in concert with the spacesuit and spacecraft. The tight coupling of many subsystems combined with an emphasis on simplicity and fault tolerance created unique challenges and opportunities for the design team. During the development of the crew ECLSS, the Dragon 1 cargo spacecraft flew with a simple ECLSS for animals, providing an opportunity for technology development and the early characterization of system-level behavior. As the ECLSS design matured a series of tests were conducted, including with humans in a prototype capsule in November 2016, the Demo-1 test flight to the ISS in March 2019, and human-in-the-loop ground testing in the Demo-2 capsule in January 2020 before the same vehicle performs a crewed test flight. This paper describes the design and operations of the ECLSS, the development process, and the lessons learned. Behrens Specialist in Energy Policy Resources, Science, and Industry Division The International Space Station and the Space Shuttle Summary The International Space Station (ISS) program began in 1993, with Russia joining the United States, Europe, Japan, and Canada. Crews have occupied ISS on a 4-6 month rotating basis since November 2000. The U.S. Space Shuttle, which first flew in April 1981, has been the major vehicle taking crews and cargo back and forth to ISS, but the shuttle system has encountered difficulties since the Columbia disaster in 2003. Russian Soyuz spacecraft are also used to take crews to and from ISS, and Russian Progress spacecraft deliver cargo, but cannot return anything to Earth, since they are not designed to survive reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere. A Soyuz is always attached to the station as a lifeboat in case of an emergency. President Bush, prompted in part by the Columbia tragedy, made a major space policy address on January 14, 2004, directing NASA to focus its activities on returning humans to the Moon and someday sending them to Mars. Included in this “Vision for Space Exploration” is a plan to retire the space shuttle in 2010. The President said the United States would fulfill its commitments to its space station partners, but the details of how to accomplish that without the shuttle were not announced. The shuttle Discovery was launched on July 4, 2006, and returned safely to Earth on July 17. -

Well, to help out in space, scientists have designed and used robotic arms for years. On Earth, scientists have designed robotic arms for everything from moving heavy equipment to performing delicate surgery.
