Test flights were reported from 1966 to 1968 and the missile is believed to have entered service in 1970. An improved version, the DF-3A, was developed in the early 1980s, with flight tests starting in 1986. The DF-3A has an increased range and improved accuracy, and a conventional high-explosive warhead was developed for an export order to Saudi Arabia. In 1985, flight tests began of a modernised DF-3 missile with a new delivery system, probably a multiple re-entry vehicle type which, according to Chinese sources, would have the ability to place re-entry vehicles on dispersed targets. However, it is believed that the tests were unsuccessful and the missile remains with a single warhead. While the DF-3 served well as an intermediate-range ballistic missile, its limited range made it relatively ineffective against key targets. With this in mind, the Chinese developed, essentially in parallel with the DF-3, the two- stage DF-4 (designated by NATO as the CSS-3). The DF-4 missile went on to form the baseline design for the Chinese Long March satellite launch vehicles. Description The DF-3 is a single-stage, liquid-fuelled ballistic missile, 21.2 m long and 2.25 m in diameter, with four clipped delta fins at the base of the missile. The missile has a launch weight of 64,000 kg and it is thought that, in the early days, it probably used a ground-based radio-command guidance system similar to those employed on some early US missiles. This was later changed to inertial guidance. Propulsion The DF-3 uses vanes in the efflux nozzles for control during the boost phase of flight. The motor consists of a cluster of four YF-2 engines, which use A line diagram of the Chinese B-611 SRBM storable liquids, unsymmetrical dimethyl hydrazine (UDMH) fuel and AK-27 (Peter Humphris) 1124439 oxidiser (nitric acid with 27% nitrogen tetroxide), and provide a total thrust of 96 tonnes. The motors have a burn time of around 140 seconds. This gives the B-611M version entered service in 2007. For a discussion of policy options and approaches, see the related Issue Brief 92056, Chinese Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction: Current Policy Issues. The issue of Chinese proliferation involves three aspects: China’s support for nonproliferation efforts, China’s transfers that promote proliferation, and vertical proliferation (modernization of China’s WMD and missile programs). Since 1992, China has responded to U.S. and other pressures to participate in some parts of international nonproliferation regimes. China promised to abide by the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), which is not a treaty, but a set of guidelines. China also acceded to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) and signed the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). However, it is not a member of the MTCR, Zangger Committee, Nuclear Suppliers Group, Australia Group, or the Wassenaar Arrangement. The pressures to join nonproliferation efforts that China faced in the early 1990s have weakened, while its commitment to nonproliferation is unclear. Chinese missile-related transfers have not violated any international treaties, since the MTCR is not a treaty, but have violated Chinese pledges and U.S.

    China Missile Chronology Last update: June 2012 2012 18 May 2012 The Department of Defense releases the 2012 “Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China” report. The report highlights that the PLA Air force is modernizing its ground‐based air defense forces with conventional medium‐range ballistic missiles, which can “conduct precision strikes against land targets and naval ships, including aircraft carriers, operating far from China’s shores beyond the first island chain.” According to the Department of Defense’s report, China will acquire DF‐31A intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and enhanced, silo‐based DF‐5 (CSS‐4) ICMBs by 2015. To date, China is the third country that has developed a stealth combat aircraft, after the U.S. and Russia. J‐20 is expected conduct military missions by 2018.     : STATE OF ISRAEL SPOKESPERSON OF THE MINISTRY OF DEFENSE February 11th, 2007 Successful Test Arrow Weapon System The Arrow Weapon System marked tonight at 9:18 PM, 11/02/07, an important milestone by completing another successful test. The test, the 15th for the interceptor, the 10th for the complete weapon system, is part of the Arrow System Improvement Program, ASIP, which is being carried out jointly, by Israel and the United States. The objectives of the test were: To examine improved performance including widening of the interception envelope To test the system in an integrated operational configuration engaging two batteries located at a distance from each other. To check implementation of lessons from previous tests. Several novel elements marked this test: The test took place at night time. The target missile simulated a yet nonexistent ballistic missile operating under extreme conditions. The interceptor belonged to the first series of interceptors jointly produced by Boeing and Israel Aerospace Industries/ MLM. The target trajectory demonstrated an operational scenario and all the system's components performed in their operational configuration. Immediately after the target was launched, the Arrow Weapon System started its operation. The Fire Control Radar (FCR) acquired the target and sent its data to the Battle Management Command and Control (BMC). A defense plan was issued and a mission command was sent to the launcher. The interceptor was launched and performed its trajectory toward the interception point. The Arrow program is managed by the Israeli Missile Defense Organization in the Research and Development Directorate in the Israeli Ministry of Defense (IMOD), in close cooperation with the US missile Defense Agency (MDA).
