Thanks to the Almighty God who has guided and protected me throughout my academic career up to this level. My educational journey started from Ghana particularly from the city of Kumasi and with determination, and hard work has gotten me this far not forgotten the supports of significant others along my path. Finally, obtaining a PhD in France, one of the world’s developed countries, developed in all aspects- socially, culturally and most importantly scientifically. The journey has been a great challenge.     ”Second heaven” Forestillinger om Vesten hos unge talenter ved et fotballakademi i Ghana Fredrik Ødegaard Masteroppgave ved Sosialantropologisk institutt UNIVERSITETET I OSLO Mai, 2008 2 Sammendrag Denne oppgaven omhandler unge ghanesiske fotballtalenters forestillinger om Vesten og hvordan forestillingene konstrueres i møtet med den vestlige fotballindustrien. Oppgaven er skrevet på grunnlag av sju måneders feltarbeid i Ghana, hvorav fire måneder ved et fotballakademi. Fotballakademier er blitt et viktig instrument for identifisering og trening av unge fotballspillere, og flere europeiske klubber var under feltarbeidsperioden involvert som eiere eller partnere ved akademier. Informantene ved akademiet gikk en usikker fremtid i møte hvis ikke fotballkarrieren tok av, mye på grunn av mangel på muligheter, men for spillerne og familiene deres var drømmen om å komme seg opp og frem som fotballspiller en like realistisk strategi som noen annen. Med utgangspunkt i James Carriers (1995) anvendelse av oksidentalismebegrepet forsøker denne oppgaven å vise betydningen av akademispillernes kulturmøte med representanter for den europeiske fotballindustrien og deres konstruksjon av Vesten. Oppgaven vil belyse hvilke livssituasjon spillerne levde under, og hvilke muligheter og begrensninger akademiet som handlingsrom skapte for spillerne.     Human Trafficking in and through Football: case studies involving “fake agents” Background It is a well know fact that the game of football and the successes of its players have instigated a growing aspiration within youngsters all over the world. The need to develop such young talents have led to the recruitment young boys, and increasingly girls, in many parts of the Global South, namely on the African and Latin American continents. In the same light, it has also increased the motivation of traffickers to prey on aspiring young talents who often lack the opportunities that some of the peers in the Western world possess. In 2015, an article in the international press claimed that 15,000 young players were moved from West Africa yearly under false pretence.1 The hidden nature of the crime means that the number could be higher. In Belgium, 442 cases of ‘African soccer slaves’ were uncovered by Senator Jean Marie Dedecker when he exposed the illegal trade in Nigerian players within European football2. When moving alone to unknown places, children are always in danger of becoming victims of crimes like human trafficking and other forms of slavery. Illicit recruitment agents use the world of football to make money by faking contracts and luring young African players to migrate to Europe under illegal conditions, only to abandon them as soon as they can. Even though sometimes the athletes migrate through legal routes, they end up becoming illegal by overstaying their visas.3 In some cases, young people are given short-term visas and contracts for trials with clubs in Europe, entering the destination country even by airplane, often paid for by the hard-earned money borrowed or given to them by their immediate or extended families.

Here, we show the potentials of football in multi-stakeholder mobilization for financing/ improving/ in urban health-care Nigeria using contributions towards heart diseases treatment by Kanu Heart Foundation and campaigns by Nigeria’s international footballers. Geo-demographic analysis of secondary data is applied to highlight inadequacy of healthcare in urban Cross River State, like of urban (like rural) Nigeria. How various diplomacy concepts could be employed by urban managements to mobilize sports-heroes, stakeholders (professionals: players, managers, clubs; civil society, etc) for fund-raising towards improving healthcare in Nigeria is described. In other words, the study focuses on the rebuilding of the built environment of Kumase from 1874 to 1960. Using qualitative evaluation of archival documents, interviews with Asante chiefs, owners of houses, heads of families, trustees of households etc., and some secondary sources of historical information, this work discusses the traditional architecture of Kumase and, how the British colonial government and its agents joined forces with the Asante political authorities and the entire citizenry to architecturally reconstruct the city.
