The station consists of 78,000 m2 crossed by an average of 160,000 people daily, for a total of approximately 58 million people every year. With approximately 750 trains every day and many urban and suburban bus runs in the surrounding area, the station is located in a strategic point of the railway network, at the intersection of the main North-South and East-West directrixes and along the European corridor n°1 and n° 5. Due to its position, it is the converging station of several Northern Italy railway lines, which continue along the Apennine line towards Florence, Rome, Naples and the Adriatic line towards Ancona and Bari. The station consists of different buildings and levels: the underground floor, occupied by subways, warehouses and technical rooms; the ground floor, with tracks, services for passengers and shops; the mezzanine, occupied by some FS offices; the upper floors, with FS lodgings and offices. Following the activation of the AV (high speed) Milan – Bologna and Bologna – Florence lines between 2008 and 2009 (with trains running at a speed of up to 300 km/h), the underground AV station is being completed at Bologna Centrale, 2 642 m long, 56 m wide and at 23 m under the current level, with four tracks to be exclusively used for high speed trains. The transit in the underground AV station of trains to Rome-Milan not stopping at Bologna started in June 2012. The transit of AV trains stopping at Bologna Centrale is planned to start in December 2012. The company Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) of the FS Group, which manages the hub, plans to complete the works (completion of the project for the AV station and renovation of the historic station) in 2015. The Station is ordinarily served by seventeen bus lines with stops located within 100 m from it, as well as several other lines running along Via Indipendenza and Via Amendola. In the main yard there are 5 bus stops and 5 more are in the side opposite Viale Pietramellara; other bus stops are accessible from the exit in Via Carracci, while those in Via Indipendenza and via Amendola are within approximately 250 m. The station hosts also a specific transport service to G. Marconi Airport (BLQ); moreover, on the occasion of the main fairs there specific shuttles connect the Station and the Exhibition Centre (Fiera), in addition to normal line services. No. of passengers/day 160,000, of which: 35,000 pass/d for AV trains 55,000 pass/d for national trains 70,000 pass/d for regional trains (57,000 for the SFM area) No. of trains/day 750, of which: transnational: 8, of which 2/4 to the SEE area (from and to Vienna) national: 210 local: 530 R, of which 450 SFM The Bologna Urban Light Rail System (Servizio Ferroviario Metropolitano - SFM) project The SFM project, under realization and to be completed in 2015-16, was born from the need to redress the metropolitan area mobility, today definitely based on private transport (private cars: capital 48%, province 69%; scooters: capital 14%, province 4%; public transport: capital 19%, province 13%; fuel-free mobility: capital 20%, province 14%), by reorganizing the network and the existing railway services in order to move a significant part of the metropolitan mobility to railways. The project provides for the transformation of the existing railway branches into 4 through lines and 1 line centred in Bologna Centrale (for a total network of 350 Km, of which 45 within Bologna); the building of 16 new stops, of which 8 within the town of Bologna; the renovation of most existing railway stops and synchronized and coordinated timetables. The operation of Bologna SFM is based on the following principles: attraction and comfort, since, like any fixed facilities, the railway infrastructure is not affected by the traffic congestion of roads; transfer rapidity, i.e. the efficiency of a speed network directly connecting Bologna to the metropolitan area; 3 synchronized timetables, i.e. a railway timetable characterized by runs at regular intervals for all stops and during the whole day (6.00 – 24.00); integration with other transport means, in particular with scheduled buses, both in terms of timetable (train and bus timetables are coordinated to reduce waiting time) and the use of the same ticket for the whole journey; low costs of realization, thanks to the utilization of a large part of the existing infrastructures, without the need to make large financial investments, and the fact that the regularly organized timetable allows to use the rolling stock in a more effective way. safety against the higher risk of accidents of private mobility. The service quality is based on a 30'/60' synchronized and coordinated timetable model from 6.00 to 24.00 and the concept of symmetry hour knot (crossing point between two railway lines for interchange with buses) and a regular offer for all stations/stops. The project provides also for a strengthening of the service in rush hours, especially for the farthest stops with an hourly schedule synchronization for the rest of the day. The project of Servizio Ferroviario Metropolitano will be included in an integrated and intermodal offer of public and private transportation. The SFT train – bus – trolleybus systems will be fully integrated in terms of: timetables (a service coordinated and synchronized also with suburban buses); infrastructures (correspondence of SFM stations with bus and trolleybus stops); organization of fares (introduction of a fare system by zone, valid for all public transport means - Project STIMER-MI MUOVO). 4 5 1.2 Airport Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport is one of the most important Italian airports in terms of number of international flights, with a strip for flights up to 5,000 nautical miles and cutting-edge technological equipment for safety and environmental protection. The airport serves a traffic area of ten million people and closed 2011 with a new traffic record in its history: 5.9 million passengers (to be precise, 5,885,884), with an increase of 6.8% on the previous year, corresponding to an increase of almost 400 thousand passengers. The increase is mainly referred to national passengers (1,725,742, +10.0%), but also the increase in international passengers was significant (4,150,471, +5.5%). In terms of carrier typology, passengers of traditional scheduled flights were 3,026,671, of low cost flights 2,421,824 and of charter flights 366,207 (plus 61,511 transits). Total transfers were 69,153, with a decrease of 1.6%. Goods carried by plane recorded a significant increase (+20.4%), corresponding to 31,526 tons. The airport is managed by the Company with public participation SAB (Società Aeroporto di Bologna). Within the Bus Terminal, services supporting mobility closely combine with an integrated offer of trade, information and entertainment opportunities aimed not only to passengers, but to the whole city. In the same way as the Airport and the central railway Station, the Bus Terminal, located in the northern edge of the city centre, places Bologna at the centre of a wide network of national and international connections, as well as provincial and regional ones, further strengthening Bologna nature of open and dynamic city.
