Accade perciò che un genio indiscusso come l’angloirlandese Paddy McAloon – classe 1957, mente e voce della band dei Prefab Sprout – rimanga a tutt’oggi perlopiù sconosciuto al grande pubblico. Nonostante il suo gruppo abbia beneficiato di un discreto successo a cavallo tra gli anni 80 e 90 grazie a brani pop accattivanti quali The King of Rock’n’Roll e Hey Manhattan!, i maggiori capolavori di songwriting da lui firmati (come Jordan: The Comeback e Andromeda Heights) non sono mai stati compresi o apprezzati fino in fondo dalle masse; e il lungo silenzio discografico della band – infine interrotto dalla pubblicazione dell’ottimo Let’s Change the World with Music (2009) – ha fatto dello schivo e sfuggente Paddy una sorta di guru della scena rock, da molti salutato come la «primula rossa» del cantautorato anglosassone. Additional thanks for a lifetime of love and encouragement go to my mother, Muriel – ‘ never indifferent ’. 4 Abstract This thesis investigates Simon Armitage ’ s claim that his poetry inherits from Tony Harrison ’ s work an interest in the politics o f form and language, and argues that both poets , although rarely compared, produce work which is conceptually and ideologically interrelated : principally by their adoption of a n ‘ un - poetic ’ , deli berately antagonistic language which is used to invade historically validated and culturally prestigious lyric forms as part of a critique of canons of taste and normative concepts of poetic register which I call barbarian masquerade .
