    STRATEGIC INTERTEXTUALITY IN THREE OF JOHN LENNON’S LATE BEATLES SONGS* MARK SPICER his article will focus on an aspect of the Beatles’ compositional practice that I believe T merits further attention, one that helps to define their late style (that is, from the ground- breaking album Revolver [1966] onwards) and which has had a profound influence on all subsequent composers of popular music: namely, their method of drawing on the resources of pre-existing music (or lyrics, or both) when writing and recording new songs. This may at first seem entirely obvious, especially since nowadays such a practice has been adopted routinely by many songwriters and producers, and is in fact the prevailing compositional strategy within certain pop and rock genres, rap being probably the most blatant example. Many rap artists are well known for their so-called “rap versions,” as Tim Hughes has described them, in which a distinctive element of a pre-existing song is lifted out of its original context—typically via digital sampling—and used as the foundation upon which a new song is built.1 Will Smith’s hit “Wild Wild West” (1999), for example, is composed around a sample of the bass-driven main groove from Stevie Wonder’s funk classic “I Wish” (1976); and Eminem’s hit “Like Toy Soldiers” * This essay is based in part on the first chapter of my dissertation, “British Pop-Rock Music in the Post-Beatles Era” (Ph.D. dissertation, Yale University, 2001). I only lived five minutes walk from Ian and John but where we lived there was a brook that’s separates Sale from Timperley; on one side of the brook is Manchester and the other side is WA postcode, Altrincham, Cheshire. I was on the Manchester side. It was just a footbridge but it separates Manchester from Cheshire basically. It was just a good meeting place for everyone from round our way. I used to hang around… and that’s how I met Ian and John basically. Me, and generations older than me, used to hang around on this bridge, just because it was a good focal point, somewhere to hang around. That’s how I met Ian and John, them walking across the bridge when they were going wandering like you do when you’re 13, 14… that’s how I first noticed them and got talking to them.., on the bridge basically. I think it was 77, 78. I was a year younger than them. I was 13. To me it was, oh these two older kids. When I first met Ian, I remember him, what I later found out, lying about all the bands he’d seen like The Sex Pistols. Him and John saw the Joy Division gig in Bowdon Vale youth club in Altrincham [March 14, 1979]. They went and I was gutted I didn’t go because I always loved Joy Division.

In recent years, the visibility of LGBTQ people in the music world has increased, and more popular music has been created that openly describes the LGBTQ experience. There has also been an increase in books and films related to LGBTQ visibility in popular music, both in fiction and nonfiction. This bibliography includes resources about gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender persons involved in the popular music field. The books have all been published in print, and many of them may also be found as e-books. Separate sections contain memoirs, novels, plays, and children’s and teen books. Several LGBT popular music-related DVDs are also listed. Each book and DVD has a link to the OCLC WorldCat record (when available) where you can see which libraries hold the item. Most of this resource is comprised of a discography of popular music recordings by LGBTQ artists. It is not meant to be complete, but many recordings still available in CD format for each artist are listed, and several are annotated.     A Conversation with Thomas Dolby by Frank Goodman (7/2007, Puremusic.com) I got an email recently from a publicist friend of mine that read something like: Would you like to talk with producer Thomas Dolby about the reissue of Prefab Sprout's 1985 pop classic, Steve McQueen? (What's your next question, I wondered, would I be interested in a date with Scarlett Johannsen?) By the time of Prefab Sprout's second release, Steve McQueen, Paddy McAloon had been recognized by critics and serious fans alike as one of the most important songwriters of the '80s. His lyrical lexicon and melodic invention bloomed in the synth pop atmosphere of The Smiths and The Cure, Scritti Polliti and ABC with a more macho intelligence, minus the cotton candy or the constipated vocal stylings. Prefab Sprout had already made critical leaps and a reputation with the precedent CD Swoon, but in a moment of brilliant serendipity engaged the zeitgeist genius of Thomas Dolby to bring their musical muscle to the masses. Steve McQueen, once the McQueen estate bridled at the title, was released in the US as Two Wheels Good. The singles and albums charted more seriously in the UK than in the States, but it did remarkably well here, considering how smart the music was. When you listen to the four clips on the Listen page, we'll bet that you recognize at least two of the songs, even if you don't know the group by their name, or the name of their creator Paddy McAloon. It was fascinating talking with Thomas Dolby about the group, the music and the time-- he's ever sharp, very eloquent, and a very witty character.
