Esta Memoria de Actividades muestra de manera el segundo puesto en la final internacional, en la resumida las actividades, proyectos y publicaciones que participaron 27 países. que la Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Es también reseñable el esfuerzo desarrollado por Tecnología (FECYT) realizó durante el 2016. Famelab

FameLab is an international scientific monologue competition that began in 2005 thanks to an original idea from Cheltenham Science Festival. Its primary objective is to promote science dissemination by identifying, training and introducing new talents, new spokespeople for science through an innovative format, the scientific monologue. In Spain, it is organised by FECYT and the British Council collaborating with "la Caixa" Foundation.

26-year-old biologist Alba Aguión Tarrío won the fourth edition of the competition. The young Galician prevailed over the other contestants with the monologue ‘The intelligence of the anthill’, in which she explained the astounding world of how ants are organised.

Her Majesty Queen Letizia of Spain presented her with a “symbolic ticket” with which she represented Spain in the international scientific monologue final at the Cheltenham Science Festival, where she won second place with the monologue ‘In Defence of Cicadas’, translated into English from Spanish.

ÓRBITA LAIKA. LA NUEVA GENERACIÓN Educational talk show Órbita Laika. La nueva generación (Laika orbit. 51,000 followers The next generation), co-produced by Radio Televisión Española (RTVE) on Twitter and FECYT, premiered on Spanish channel La 2 in September 2016, with actor and presenter Goyo Jiménez as the host. The twelve episodes 25,000 fans broadcast were seen by 181,000 people and achieved a 1.5% media on Facebook share.

FECYT produced the second season of the series of Ciencia y Arte (Science and Art) reports for the programme La aventura del saber (The Adventure of Knowledge) on “La 2”. The programme took several masterpieces of the Prado Museum as inspiration for six renowned researchers to discuss a scientific topic related to the International Year of Light in 2015. The six reports reached audience figures of 33,167 and a 1.47% media share.

The Science News and Information Service Agency (SINC), which specialises in disseminating science information in Spanish, published over 2,500 news items and reports in 2016. SINC reported on the most important science and technology conferences and meetings across the world: the Marrakech Climate Change Conference, the Starmus Festival in Tenerife, the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF) in Manchester, the Falling Walls conference in Berlin, the final in Tenerife of the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and the European Inventor Award 2016 ceremony in Lisbon, among others.

Spanish Network of Science Museums and Planetariums

From 10 to 12 February, with FECYT’s taking responsibility for the coordination and revitalisation of the Museum Network, the seventh National Meeting for Directors and Managers of Science Centres and Planetariums was held at the Museum of Human Evolution (MEH).

45 directors and managers of 33 of the most prestigious science museums and planetariums in the country participated, speaking on the importance and impact of science museums and analysing examples of best practices and innovative projects.

Spanish National Museum of Science and Technology (MUNCYT)

FECYT runs the National Museum of Science and Technology, whose historical pieces set it apart from other science museums and houses of science. Furthermore, the MUNCYT is a tool for the promotion of a scientific culture through its temporary exhibits, guided tours and educational activities intended for all audiences.

MUNCYT has a site in the city of Alcobendas, another in A Coruña and a warehouse on Paseo de las Delicias in Madrid. In 2016, the three sites together received over 200,000 visitors.

3.2 Promotion of scientific culture and innovation: children and young people

FECYT boasts a Science Culture Programme devoted to young people, the object of which is to improve the level of interest in and knowledge of science, which would help to generate an informed, participatory society, responsible for making decisions. In addition to these activities for our youngest audience, FECYT continued lending support to teachers as crucial agents in science education.

Summer Science Campuses

At the end of their stay, 1,854 campus participants undertook an online programme evaluation 7,504 applications survey, and the level of satisfaction was very high. Summer camps

This activity consists of undertaking a 5-day-long activity programme, which takes place at the MUNCYT in Alcobendas. During the “Summer at MUNCYT” sessions, the participants, whose ages span from 3 to 12, have the opportunity of immersing themselves in the world of science through entertaining, educational activities. 339 children took part from 27 June to 2 September. In the evaluation, when asked for the level of general satisfaction with the programme on a scale from 1 to 10, we found that 26% gave the maximum score, 53% gave 9, 17% gave 8, and 4% gave 7, which was the lowest score given. Science monologues tour

FECYT collaborated with the Telefónica Foundation to organise the second 11,545 students Science Monologues tour, a programme for pupils and teachers of 3rd and 4th years of compulsory secondary education to disseminate science in 333 teachers a fun and entertaining way. The tour went to seven autonomous regions: Murcia, Castilla y León, Galicia, the Basque Country, the Community of Madrid, Extremadura and Ceuta. Programming Workshops

FECYT continued collaborating with Google in 2016 to deliver practical workshops at the MUNCYT in Alcobendas for children and teenagers, to train them in the creative use of technology and teach them programming. 1,485 children from 8 to 18 years old took part in these school workshops. In these sessions, given to school groups that visit the museum, pupils learn about the world of programming in a 90-minute workshop targeted to their age group. The Technology Club is a continuous training itinerary for programming comprising 2-hour sessions over several weeks. In 2016, 30 primary school and 30 secondary school children took part (making up the 60 places available in total). At primary level, 43% were girls and at secondary, 30%. Both workshops took place at the Alcobendas (Madrid) MUNCYT site.

Science weekend

On 22 and 23 October 2016, the outdoor terrace at the MUNCYT in Alcobendas was transformed into an exhibition site with stands to hold the seventh Science Weekend, the theme of which was science and Don Quixote, in honour of the 400th anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes,. The fair boasted the collaboration of Obra Social “la Caixa” (their corporate social responsibility programme).

Scientix

In 2016, FECYT completed its participation as a national point of contact in the Scientix project, an initiative funded by the European Commission (EC) through the Seventh Framework Programme, run by the European Schoolnet (EUN), which promotes continuous dissemination and exchange of technical knowledge and practical examples of science education in the European Union (EU).

Throughout the year, FECYT supported the project by sending news, events and educational resources through FECYT's Information System for Teachers and social media. It also organised a Scientix workshop at the Drawing ED Conference. 3.3 Social participation in science

FECYT develops programmes and activities that are designed to increase social involvement in Spanish R&D+i. The goal is for the general public to learn about, appreciate and participate in science.

Council of Scientific Foundations

The Scientific Foundations Programme is intended for private foundations in Spain. The initiatives taken in this programme are communicated and promoted through the Council of Scientific Foundations, set up officially on 17 March 2014 with the aim of disseminating and promoting best practices in science funding, in addition to boosting joint activities and synergies designed to increase investment in science. By late 2016, this body comprised 45 foundations, 10 more than in the previous year. Among them, it is worth noticing the Luzón Foundation ‘United against ELA’.

The Board organised its second international meeting with the participation of Swedish foundations the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, as an example of excellence in undertaking large-scale science research funding programmes, and the Nobel Foundation as an example of recognition of research excellence.

3.4 Metric analysis and monitoring of science and innovation

FECYT provides support to the State Secretariat for Research, Development and Innovation in creating and analysing indicators, as well as in monitoring public R&D+i policies. The aim of this collaboration is to provide reference information that will help in the understanding, accountability and progress, in a planned way, in improving the Spanish Science, Technology and Innovation System.

Spanish R&D+i Observatory

The Spanish R&D+i Observatory (ICONO) offers up-to-date information on the indicators, analyses and main R&D+i strategies on a national and international level.

Four new indicators were created in 2016: one referring to return on participation in Horizon 2020, two taken from the Survey on the Social Perception of Science and Technology (perception of resources set aside for science and technology, and evaluation of professions), and finally, another referring to

3.5 Spanish R&D+i support services

FECYT provides support services to the Spanish R&D+i system, such as management of the main national permits for online science resources, the CVN (standardised CV) and the Seal of Quality for Spanish journals. It also supports implementation of open access policy in Spain.

Scientific Information Management

In 2016, FECYT –in conjunction with the Spanish University Rectors’ Conference (CRUE)– negotiated an agreement with Elsevier for the ScienceDirect resource with equality standards for all universities (state and private) and State Research Bodies (OPIS), with which it managed to save more than Scopus and WOS information €3 million in the 2017-2020 period.

Standardised Curriculum Vitae

The first adjustments to the CVN, the standard for curricular information exchange among researchers, created by FECYT, contributed in 2016 to its increased usage for processing the main state grants of the State Science, Technology and Innovation Research Plan, which is present in 34 national, 19 regional and 74 local activities.

Progress was also made in opening up the CVN standard to enable all institutions –and not only those that are certified or in the process of certification– and researchers who so wish to develop functionalities adapted to their needs with the aim of enriching the service.

Necessary technological developments were also undertaken to connect the publisher with the WOS database and thus facilitate automatic incorporation of indexed bibliographic records in this database into the CVN. Implementation of this application was also studied with Scopus and PubMed. Open Science Collector

One of the keys to advancing in implementing RRI is to strengthen open access to scientific knowledge, research results and information.

FECYT heads RECOLECTA, a platform which groups together all of the national scientific repositories and provides services to repository managers, researchers, and to those parties involved in policy development (public decision- makers).

In 2016, FECYT progressed in the design of a methodology that would enable us to assess and guarantee the proper inclusion of metadata in repositories necessary for their collection. The interoperability of scientific information stored in institutions’ infrastructure is thus guaranteed. FECYT also published a report with the level of Spanish universities’ and research centres’ compliance with the mandate on open access.

In May 2016, FECYT organised a workshop on how to collect statistics with RECOLECTA for a total of 18 universities. The workshop was held at the Leganés campus of UC3M and boasted the in-person participation of nine universities and several more by video link. 3.6 Supporting the internationalisation of Spanish science

FECYT has developed a line of work in scientific diplomacy in order to improve the visibility and prestige of Spanish science and scientists. Additionally, the Foundation has made the European Office available to the State Secretariat for R&D+i. The European Office is a structure that was created to facilitate and encourage the participation of public R&D+i centres in European projects included in the Horizon 2020 programme.

Communities of Spanish researchers abroad

The second Science Diplomacy Coordination Conference was held in Madrid on 4, 5 and 6 July with the aim of improving the integration of Spanish science into foreign policy. The Associations of Spanish Scientists Abroad, which bring together many scientists working in other countries, also participated in the event. The meetings aims included: reporting on the latest developments of SECTI and its European context;
