Madrid Museums: The Obvious and Not-so-obvious (and how to get in for free) Here’s a long list of Madrid museums worth visiting while you’re here. And to make things easier, we’re breaking it down into two parts: the obvious (like the Prado) and the not-so- obvious (like Cerralbo). We’ll also tell you how to get in for free! If you’ve already read up on the famous Madrid museums, then scroll down… The Obvious: All of these Madrid museums are classified as “obvious” because they’re situated along the two great boulevards – Paseo del Prado and Paseo de Recoletos – where you’ll find the city’s finest arts institutions, including the Golden Triangle of Art which refers to the first three institutions on this list. Only one place is not situated here – the Royal Palace. 1. Prado Museum Spain’s national art museum houses a wide collection of European art from the 12th to the early 19th centuries, and its most notable works are by Spanish painters, Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Goya and El Greco. Considered one of the best museums in the world, the Prado’s most famous piece is Las Meninas by Velazquez. Do give yourself a few hours to walk around – the Prado is gigantic! Website When is it free? Always for under-18-year-olds and students ages 18-25 (with valid ID); Sundays and holidays from 5pm-7pm; and Mon-Sat from 6pm-8pm. Prices & Hours: General admission 14€. National Museums in Spain: A History of Crown, Church and People José María Lanzarote Guiral Summary The present report provides an overview on the history of national museums in Spain as well as an analysis of a selected set of case studies. In the first part of this report, a historical outline of the creation and evolution of museums is provided from the point of view of the enlarging scope of the concept ‘national heritage’. The choice of national museums in the second part exemplifies the role played by different categories of heritage in the construction of national master narrative in Spain, including fine arts (Museo del Prado), archaeology (Museo Arqueológico Nacional) and nature (Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales). The study of the Museum of the Americas (Museo de América) allows for the exploration of the complex relationship between Spanish national identity and the imperial past, whereas the Museum of History of Catalonia (Museu d’Història de Catalunya) leads reflection to the competing nationalist projects within the state. The Malaspina Expedition (1789-1794) in Republican Chile
Historia. vol.1 no.se Santiago 2006 THE NATIONAL INFLUENCE OF AN IMPERIAL ENTERPRISE: THE MALASPINA EXPEDITION (1789-1794) IN REPUBLICAN CHILE ANDRÉS ESTEFANE JARAMILLO* Abstract The research done by members of the Malaspina Expedition (1789-1794) during their stay in Chile was not only useful in that same period, but also in post- colonial era. In 19th century, republican authorities had to recur to the information recompiled by the scientific expeditions of the Illustration – and especially that of Malaspina – to complete the lack of up to date information in geographical matters, to solve territorial disputes with neighboring countries and to start new explorations aimed to know the exact characteristics of regions recently joined to national sovereignty. The continuing recovery of the expeditions` registers create a new link between the last century of colonial domination and the first century of our republican history, a moment in which science would play a main role in the recuperation and reinterpretation of the meaning of geographical knowledge from the previous century. During the 19th century, the nations of Latin America made a continuous effort to recover the research done by several scientific expeditions that arrived to America during the last century of colonial domination. The lack of up to date information and the need for details about the characteristics and economic potentials of those territories, aroused in republican authorities the interest to recover any information from the past that might be useful to the needs of the new political reality. The dazzling sense of urgency with which ethnographic observations, botanical and zoological notes, essays on mineralogy, iconography and surveys on cartography were recompiled, confirm the intensity with which this task was undertaken; not only investigating in local archives, but also financing recurrent visits to libraries and collections of documents in Europe. -

TOURISM IN HISTORIC CORES, CONFLICT OR OPPORTUNITY? THE STAKEHOLDERS POINT OF VIEW IN MADRID’S CASE Manuel Valenzuela and Carmen Hidalgo Universidad Autónoma de Madrid [email protected] [email protected] Abstract In this contribution Madrid is presented as a tourist destination based on its cultural appeal, most of it consisting in the museums and other similar activities (exhibition halls, art fairs, art galleries, e.g.). A point to be underlined about this issue is the highly concentrated spatial patt ern. Even so, Madrid’s historic centre keeps playing the role of major destination of tourist fl ows. It is there that a program of interviews has been car- ried out with the help of a very well selected set of stakeholders following a methodology designed to be implemented in the historic centres of Brussels and Rome as well. The outcomes obtained point out a few controversial opinions about the relation of tourism with the city’s historic centre; the tourist economic sector emphasized the role of tour- ism as an opportunity. On the other hand, the socially inspired organizations see it basically as a source of confl ict that can be counteracted by means of integrated policies for the whole historic centre. 1. Some basic features of Madrid as tourist destination Spain is a politically decentralised country with its capital Madrid situ- ated at the geographic heart of the Iberian Peninsula. The continental- Mediterranean climate has strong seasonal diff erences. Madrid’s ori- gins are quite recent in comparison with other Spanish cities. BIBLIOTECA NACIONAL DE ESPAÑA [Enrique Pérez Boyero, «Notas y documentos sobre la protección y evacuación del patrimonio documental y bibliográfico durante la Guerra Civil Española», Manuscrt.Cao, 9, ISSN: 1136-3703] Resumen: Este artículo ofrece información sobre la protección y evacuación del patrimonio documental y bibliográfico en la España republicana durante la Guerra Civil. En los apéndices se incluyen, entre otros, un catálogo de documentos que permiten identificar cada uno de los volúmenes manuscritos e impresos que fueron evacuados a Valencia y Ginebra procedentes de la Biblioteca del Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, de la Biblioteca Nacional de España y de algunas bibliotecas particulares que habían sido incautadas y depositadas en esta última (bibliotecas de Lázaro Galdiano, del duque de T’Serclaes, del marqués de Toca y del duque de Medinaceli). Abstract: This article offers information about the protection and evacuation of the documental and bibliographical patrimony in Republican Spain during the Civil War. Catalogues that allow us to identify which manuscripts and printed books were evacuated to Valencia and Ginebra are included in the appendixes. The concerned volumes came primarily from the Biblioteca del Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial and from the Biblioteca Nacional de España. Included in the collections of the latter appear volumes coming from some private libraries that had been previously confiscated, such as Lázaro Galdiano, the one belonged to the duke of T’Serclaes, the one belonged to the Marquis of Toca or the one owned by the duke of Medinaceli.
