It addresses the series as a serious expression of the relationship between film and religion. Narrative, reception, style and context are used deliberately to present themes related to the clash of pagan religion and Christianity. The article contends that the development and construction of Vikings can be viewed in light of a liquefaction of religion.     SCANDINAVIAN DESCENDANTS OF CHARLEMAGNE -253- SCANDINAVIAN MEDIEVAL DESCENDANTS OF CHARLEMAGNE: A DETAILED GENEALOGY OF THE ISSUE OF AGNES HAAKONSDOTTIR, OF THE SO-CALLED FAIRHAIR DYNASTY by M Sjöström, MSc1 ABSTRACT Early genealogical connections that link Scandinavian families to Charlemagne are discussed, as are the societal circumstances affecting genealogy, and the practically simultaneous spread of feudal and chivalric forms. Difficulties in Scandinavian medieval genealogies are outlined. Several examples are given of weaknesses which have, for example, influenced Europäische Stammtafeln. A detailed descendants’ table from Agnes, lady of Borgarsyssel, down to the 16th century is given, listing approximately 220 Charlemagne descendants identified from secondary literature. Agnes was the natural daughter of king Haakon V of Norway (reigned 1299- 1319). Her progeny is represented in the nobility of all the Scandinavian countries, but predominantly in Sweden. Foundations (2007) 2 (4): 253-276 © Copyright FMG and the author Introduction In the late Middle Ages and the beginning of the modern era, Charlemagne blood was one of the highest insignia of nobility, sealing something like membership of the chivalric family of the world. Although the demand was highest in western Europe such a heritage was also esteemed in Scandinavian countries. Even today a number of private web pages aim specifically to demonstrate Scandinavian descents from Charlemagne. Charlemagne descent serves as a relatively good indicator of the adoption in Scandinavia of the characteristics of western European civilization. The spread of that descent can be measured geographically, temporally and through social class. Apparently because Norway at the time was essentially part of other kingdoms, Norwegian genealogies in the late medieval and early modern period have been relatively obscure in the wider European context.

    Konungs skuggsjá and the Interplay between Universal and Particular Karl G. Johansson and Elise Kleivane In mid-thirteenth century, Norway emerged as the realm of a king with European ambitions. Hákon Hákonarson had become king at a young age with the earl Skúli Bárðarson as the real ruler, but by 1240 the earl was dead and Hákon ruled his kingdom alone. It is in this period and within the elite culture of the strong and stable kingdom that the work Konungs skuggsjá is thought to have been created.1 It was a work that would be of interest in elite milieus throughout the Middle Ages. In Iceland the interest is seen primarily from mid-fourteenth century and well into the post-Reformation period, and is attested by the large amount of manuscripts containing text witnesses of the work. In this article we present the work and its original context in the elite milieus of Norway in the second part of the thirteenth century, its relation to the European tradition, as well as its further dissemination in Norway and Iceland throughout the Middle Ages as it is reflected in the extant manuscripts. Finally we treat briefly the scholarship and later reception of Konungs skuggsjá in order to enhance the reading of the more detailed studies presented in this volume. It is possible, however, to detect influences both concerning structure and content from European works (see further below), both from the Speculum tradition and from a more general encyclopaedic one.
