Significance: Completed in 1874, the Mark Twain Carriage House is a multi-purpose barn with a coachman's apartment designed by architects Edward Tuckerman Potter and Alfred H, Thorp as a companion structure to the residence for noted American author and humorist Samuel Clemens and his family. Its massive size and its generous accommodations for the coachman mark this structure as an unusual carriage house among those intended for a single family's use. The building has the wide overhanging eaves and half-timbering typical of the Chalet style popular in the late 19th century for cottages, carriage houses, and gatehouses. During the period of con- struction, temporary quarters were secured at 414 Harvard Street. The new building stands upon the site of the old building which the Club had occupied since the year 1833. In order to celebrate in an appropriate manner the comple- tion of the work and the Centennial Anniversary of the Founding of the Porcellian Club, a committee, consisting of the Building Committee and the officers of the Club, was chosen. February 21, 1891, was selected as the date, and it was decided to have the Annual Meeting and certain Literary Exercises commemorative of the occasion precede the Dinner. Moreover, indexes to each volume were kept by handwritten notation, in both pencil and ink, seldom in alphabetical order, and with numerous addenda and instances of inserted or corrected text. Researchers should exercise special and unusual latitude in an attempt to gather all the citations for a specific name. There are a number of variant patterns, but the most consistent apply to abbreviated versions of the name of the same person. "Cunningham, ~riggs"may be the same as "Cunningham, B." I,Dann, H. E ." may be the same as "Dann, H. H." (due to blurred or illegible handwriting). "Campbell, E. P." may be the same as "Campbell, President" (or Senator, Governor, Secretary, etc.). In many cases the index has knowingly been recreated literally from the original volume indexes with the mistakes intact to avoid an even more confusing, erroneous and unconfirmable interpretation.

ABSTRACT THE BASOVIZZA MONUMENT: REBRANDING PUBLIC MEMORY, CONSTRUCTING IDENTITY, AND NORMALIZING POLITICAL AGENDA by Louise Zamparutti The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2018 Under the Supervision of Professor Rachel Spilka In the early 1990s, Italy’s former Fascist party, the newly renamed Alleanza Nazionale (AN), began to promote a new interpretation of events that occurred in the final stages of World War II. In collaboration with local and national civic organizations, the AN promoted this rendition of history by publishing fictionalized memoirs and popular narratives, producing a nationally aired television drama, and finalizing the construction of a new national monument. The Basovizza Monument was officially inaugurated on February 10, 2007, and is now a popular attraction for tourists and classroom visits.
