The Lingerie Salesmen Gary chases his dream job, to become a sales rep for a lingerie wholesaler. The story is set in 1968. 1 | P a g e As Gary Jones sat in the hotel restaurant in Norwich eating his steak and chips he reflected on what had been a good week so far for sales. It was a Thursday night in October 1968. He had secured several big orders from customers in his patch. He had been on the road for three days and was looking forward to getting home and seeing his wife in Peterborough tomorrow. Perhaps he might sit at the bar for a drink after dinner. There only seemed to be one other man at the bar, nursing a beer. Nine months ago, he had been working for a tractor dealer in Peterborough. Sometimes he had to travel round Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Norfolk, selling spare parts. Although he was a successful salesman he found it slightly dull. He had been looking for a new job that paid bonuses based on sales as he knew he would make more money that way. It was his wife who had pointed out the advert in the local paper for a sales rep for a local firm, called Webbers. He had seen the ad but had skipped over it. The sales rep would be selling women’s lingerie and hosiery to department stores and family run businesses anywhere in the UK. Although the firm was also based in Peterborough it would probably mean being away from home most weeks. “But I don’t know anything about women’s clothes, “he said in protest. -

Power MA BSc ATI CtexT ILTM Senior Lecturer in Fashion Technology Manchester Metropolitan University Manchester [email protected] ABSTRACT Since the days of the humble hose, knitwear has expanded into a revolutionary industry that is classified within the high fashion category. This paper presents an investigation into knitwear’s evolution, which can only be described as remarkable from functional items of clothing to fashionable cutting edge styling utilizing the most advanced technology. The first obvious sign of knitwear changing its role from functional to fashionable, occurred during the latter part of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century, and since then knitwear has never looked back. The 1920s brought about the birth of the classic twin -set promoted strongly by the English gentry and reinforced by a huge advertising campaign that pushed knitwear irrevocably to the forefront of fashion. The 30s remained quiet in terms of knitted fashion whilst the knitwear industry struggled to survive against the cheaper foreign imports. By the mid 30s the industry had recovered and had become ever more directional. However, it was not until after the second world war that a strong push was made in terms of design education to promote knitwear as a fashion item in its own right (rather than a mere accessory). Post the Second World War, fabric was in abundance and the classic knitted twin-set once again became high fashion with American film stars promoting the sophisticated image of knit. -

It is the tale of a lad growing up in an area that was doomed to become a dormitory for all the commercial areas around it. I would like to think that I grew up at its beginning, but in retrospect the change is going on all the time and I witnessed only the period of the most rapid acceleration. Sompting, which is the village to which I refer, is in fact a collection of small hamlets, comprising of Lower Cokeham, Upper Cokeham and Sompting itself. There are two areas, one being Cokeham, which has its own public house, The Ball Tree, and the other Sompting, which also has a public house called The Marquis of Granby. These pubs were, I was brought up to believe, about a mile apart or as near as mattered in that old fashioned world that existed then. It was an area of closely knit people, and a lot of one's business was known by others, but not out of a sense of nosiness, as opponents to the old village life would like one to think, but because each life in many ways was inter woven with the others.
