President’s Letter 2014

Good evening and welcome to the Femmy Gala, the Underfashion Club’s annual dinner that recognizes and celebrates the significant achievements of Intimate Apparel Industry leaders worldwide! Honorees are selected from the , manufacturing, supply and design sectors of the business. I would like to extend the heartiest of congratulations to the 2014 Femmy honorees, Hudson’s Bay Company l Lord & Taylor, Delta Galil VICTOR H. VEGA Industries, Ltd., Iluna USA LLC, Jockey International, Inc. and Seth Morris all of whom clearly exemplify innovative spirit and dedication to our industry! Special congratulations to President’s Award recipient Roslyn Harte.

As a fundraising event, the Femmy Gala serves a dual purpose: creating a venue for business and social interchange, and generating the monies that enable us to fulfill our mission of “Supporting education today for a better industry tomorrow.” The Underfashion Club provides financial support to students through our extensive scholarship and intern- ship programs. Special thanks to Best Pacific Textile/New Horizon Elastic for their dedicated scholarship support of our industry’s future designers.

As part of our emphasis on the students who are our future, the Femmy Gala is hosting, for the eleventh consecutive year, a design contest for Intimate Apparel track students from FIT. Thanks are extended to the SAIG Co-Chairs, Suzanne Beck and Clelia Parisi, and to FIT Professor Alexandra Armillas, for creating this year’s contest entitled “Shaping The Future.” Special thanks to Stretchline Holdings Ltd., Regina Miracle International Ltd. and Penn Asia Company Limited for most generously sponsoring this year’s contest, and to Eurovet and Curvexpo for providing roundtrip airfare, accommodations and complimentary admission to this July’s Interfiliere Paris / Salon International de la for the winner of the Student Design Contest. 22016 2014.FEMMY.Pages.1-32_47443-Femmy PG 1-24 1/30/14 11:26 AM Page 9

President’s Letter (continued)

The Femmy Gala takes months of advance planning. Sincere congratulations and thanks to Femmy Co-Chairs, Karen Bromley and Barbara Lipton and the entire Femmy committee, for their enthusiasm and hard work.

Thanks to the outstanding support of Francesca Spinetta and the Intima publications, the international community has for many years been made aware of the Underfashion Club and the talented student designers who compete in our annual design contest.

For 56 years, the Underfashion Club has been a bastion of dedicated vol- unteers who are passionately working to make a difference in our industry! We strive each year to offer our members benefits that will enhance their knowledge of the industry, and their opportunity for advancement:

•Our Web Site, www.underfashionclub.org, is the portal for mining a wealth of information and guidance, which includes an online Membership Directory, and the Femmy Journal Archive.

•Our Blog,“Insider,”shines a spotlight on industry leaders and topics and provides trend direction!

•Our Seminars inform and educate our members and industry associates in a comfortable, social atmosphere.

As we look to the future, the role of the Underfashion Club in service to the Intimate Apparel community is expanding. It is our honor to be asked to steward the Mary Krug Memorial Scholarship Fund established by her many industry friends, which will benefit the education of students in fashion merchandising.

In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow Officers and Directors, and all of the members who have greatly contributed to the success of the Underfashion Club, Inc.

The Underfashion Club, Inc. has just concluded another successful year of providing scholarships and internships for students interested in pursuing careers in Intimate Apparel. The Club works with industry leaders to develop and strengthen ties with both the Fashion Institute of Technology and the High School of Fashion Industries. Students from these Institutions have been the primary beneficiaries of the Club's considerable financial support of “education today for a better industry tomorrow.”

The Underfashion Club is dedicated to the belief that the future depends on attracting and educating young people to the opportunities in our industry. As a means to this end, our scholarships provide substantial monetary support to students who pursue college-level, intimate apparel- related courses. Our internship program provides college students with the opportunity of working as interns for intimate apparel manufacturers, suppliers and retailers while continuing their education. As a result of this program, several graduates have entered our industry. It is our expectation that companies will hire more students based on the success of the current endeavor.

The Femmy Gala is the fundraising vehicle, which enables the Underfashion Club to support its extensive program of scholarships, awards, internships and grants. The Underfashion Club has also been fortunate in attracting a number of dedicated scholarship sponsors and internship providers. We are especially grateful to Stretchline Holdings Ltd., Regina Miracle International Ltd., and Penn Asia Company Limited for underwriting this year’s Student Design Contest.

If you or your company would be interested in sponsoring a summer intern, or providing additional scholarship opportunities, we would be most pleased to hear from you.

Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient SETH MORRIS

A fixture in intimates for over 30 years, Seth Morris’ journey to President/CEO of Carole Hochman Design Group has been momentous and industry changing. The intimate apparel business and the Morris family go back to the mid-1940’s when Seth's father, Mel Morris, back from the war as a highly decorated Air Force Pilot, worked his way up to ownership of Val Mode Lingerie by the early 50’s. While Val Mode grew to be a powerful force in the industry, Seth was busy forging his own path, establishing himself in the business world on the sound advice of his father. After graduating from Brown University in 1978, Seth went to work for San Francisco-based Determined Production, the master licensee & manufacturer of products evolved from the world of America’s most famous cartoonist, Charles Schulz, and his beloved “Peanuts” characters. Seth joined the family business in 1983 as Vice-President of Sales, beginning a successful 13-year stretch as Val Mode emerged as one of the largest, most innovative and creative companies in the sleepwear industry. The firm’s growth was fueled by dominant positions in most every major store in America along with a significant and successful partnership with, at the time, the new kid on the block, Victoria’s Secret. Despite the painful loss of his dad in 1986 and beloved brother, Abott, six months later in 1987, the company pushed forward to enjoy some of its best years with Seth ascending to company president at the age of 29 and working together with brother Stuart and sister Juliette, to move Val Mode forward in growth, prod- uct, and market position. In 1996, the family sold Val Mode and Seth joined Carole Hochman Design Group as Executive Vice President. Led by Carole Hochman, Neal Hochman, and Peter Gabbe, CHDG was a company driven by product, quality, and creativity, as well as a forerunner in understanding the power of licensing in our industry. During the next 13 years CHDG generated sizable growth and took its place as a dominant model and industry player. In 2002, with its mix of proprietary brands, private label development, and an extensive licensed portfolio of premier brands, Seth was named President. 2010 saw the purchase of CHDG by its largest competitor, Komar Brands. Already a dynamic and fast growing firm under the stewardship of Charlie Komar, the combined entity has become one of the largest sleepwear entities in the world. This has been accomplished with strong product development, unique proprietary brand creation, and new licensed partnerships all under the vast Komar umbrella. Named as President/CEO at the time of acquisition, Seth continues to run the Carole Hochman division today. Outside of work, family and sports are Seth's passion. Shelley Morris, Seth’s wife, is a highly successful and published interior designer, and daughter Victoria is a fast-rising executive at Viacom. Seth’s lifelong love of sports began with a stellar High School career as an All-State football and baseball player and proceeded on to Brown University, where he was an All-Ivy League Running Back. He is a member of both his High School and Alma Mater’s Athletic Hall of Fame (as a key member of Brown’s 1976 Ivy League Champions,) where he was also named the Rhode Island Jewish Athlete of the Year. 22016 2014.FEMMY.Pages.1-32_47443-Femmy PG 1-24 1/30/14 11:28 AM Page 31
