Brown describes the poet’s body of work as a “regular alternation of lyric with political or historical themes,” noting that Mayakovsky’s long lyric poems, like Человек [Man, 1916] and Про это [About That, 1923] are followed by the propagandistic Мистерия-буфф [Mystery-Bouffe, 1918] and Владимир Ильич Ленин [Vladimir Il’ich Lenin, 1924], respectively (Brown 109). While Brown’s assessment of Mayakovsky’s work is correct in general, it does not allow for adequate consideration of the development of his poetic persona over the course of his career, which is difficult to pinpoint, due in part to the complex interplay of the lyrical and historical in his poetry. In order to investigate the problem of Mayakovsky’s ever-changing and contradictory poetic persona, I have chosen to examine two of his plays: Владимир Маяковский: Трагедия [Vladimir Mayakovsky: A Tragedy, 1913] and both the 1918 and 1921 versions of Mystery- Bouffe. My decision to focus on Mayakovsky's plays arose from my desire to examine what I termed the “spectacle-ization” of the poet’s ego—that is, the representation of the poetic persona in a physical form alive and on stage. -

The study traces the developing dialectic of literary radicalism and the emergent hegemony of capitalism through the dissemination of radical ideas in literature and a groundswell of public literacy. However, soon after the revolution many within the Bolshevik Party, including Trotsky, were denouncing Soviet bureaucracy as a persistent problem. In fact, for Trotsky the problem of Soviet bureaucracy became the central political and theoretical issue that preoccupied him for the remainder of his life. This study examines the development of Leon Trotsky’s views on that subject from the first years after the Russian Revolution through the completion of his work The Revolution Betrayed in 1936. In his various writings over these years Trotsky expressed three main understandings of the nature of the problem: During the civil war and the first years of NEP he denounced inefficiency in the distribution of supplies to the Red Army and resources throughout the economy as a whole. -

Lesley Milne. Mikhail Bulgakov: A Critical Biography. Cambridge/ New York: Cambridge University Press, 1990. xiv, 324 pp. Lesley Milne'sMikhail Bulgakoa: ACritical Biograph.y, although not the first critical biography of Bulgakov, is timely for at least three reasons. First, it became available just before Bulgakov's centenary; second, its concise form makes the book useful for most courses on Bulgakov and Soviet literature of the period; third, the quality of the writing and the presentation of new data on Bulgakov for English speakingstudents and scholars make this biography valuable. Milne considers Bulgakov as a writer of the 1920s and 1930s. By doing so, she breaks with the myth of Bulgakov as a "contemporary" writer, as he is perceived in present day Russia. Making use of well-researched data, Milne carefully traces Bulgakov's difficult path to "brilliance" ("brilliant" is a favorite adjective in Bulgakov's lexicon). Bulgakov's early years have been described in detail in substantial biographies by M. Chudakova, E. Proffer, and C. Wright. This must be the reason why Milne pays little attention to the writer's childhood and starts her investigation with his creative years, i. e., from 1921. That year he left medicine for good and devoted himself to literature. Concentrating on the years from 1921 to 1940 (the year of his death), Milne closely follows changes in Bulgakov's personal and creative life with a strong accent on the latter. The book is well illustrated and organized. It consists often chapters, title of each signaling a landmark in Bulgakov's literary career and dealing with a specific literary work. -
