RECIPIENT: [Sacred Congregation "de Propaganda Fide"] TYPE OF DOCUMENT: Printed matter DESCRIPTION: "Relazione Della Diocesi di Boston negli Stati Uniti [United States] di America Settentrionale," in 11 paragraphs. In his report on his diocese, dated 24 apr [24 apr 1831; see Cal. 1831-46 III 010], Benedict Fenwick [Benedict Joseph Fenwick], bishop of Boston, mentions that he sent four young ecclesiastics to the Sulpician Seminary of Montréal and one to the seminary of the bishop of Telmissus [Jean-Jacques Lartigue], again in Montréal. The Sommario contains a copy of Benedict Joseph Fenwick's letter to the prefect of the Sacred Congregation "de Propaganda Fide" [Carlo Maria Pedicini], dated 24 apr 1831: the writer mentions his trip to Montréal in which the five ecclesiastics mentioned above were assigned to their colleges. The controversy deals with the right of appointment of the parish priest of Montréal [Notre-Dame de-Montréal, currently Claude Fay]. The two queries are, [1] what evidence does the Sulpician Seminary of Montréal have for its claim that the superior pro tempore of the Sulpician Seminary of Montréal [Joseph-Vincent Quiblier] is also the parish priest of Montréal, [2] whether the superior can delegate one of his priests, against the will of the archbishop of Québec [currently Bernard-Claude Panet].
