PEWTER AND LATTEN SPOONS

CLE. 12th_13th century small, ball end English spoon with two knops on the stem and the St George cross included in the mould. Th is was possibly a London made pilgrim souvenir.

RD. 15th Century excavated pewter spoon with fig shaped shallow bowl and (lozenge) shaped stem­ section with the pointed sections at top and bottom. No marks. Ex Sandy Lmll call

UCE. Very rare excavated pewter spoon with an iron core, c. 1400. Good crowned mark on front of stem. A similar iron core spoon illustrated in 'Opgravingen in Amsterdam', p. 296, No. 568.

1 BRD. English pewter melon knop spoon with hexagonal stem section, c. early to mid 16th century, by the maker 'NB '. Ex Bradshmll Collection, ex Cooper Collection, it was exhibited at the Usher GallelY, Lincoln in 1962 and sold at Sotheby's Billingshurst 18.3.1997. Cotterell OP5444, also Homer p. 32 and p. 55 for touch (under hexagon). This touch is also illustrated on a seal top spoon in "'Opgravingen in Amsterdam" p. 320, No. 604. Length 169 mm Bowl 69x49 mm

MUB. English pewter grooved melon knop spoon with hexagon stem section. Touch by the unidentified pewterer "IB" in a beaded circle (pass. OP5440), c. early to mid 16th century. Excavatedji·om the river Thames at Lechlade in 1891. Ex. Zene Walker collection, purchased at the Bruton Knowles, Cheltenham sale May 4, 1995. I was offered this spoon in 1968 together with a newspaper cutting explaining the river discovelY for £26. - by the antiques dealer then in the Manor House at Lechlade - I turned him down! Length 151 mm, bowl 6lx48 mm, melon diam. 12 mm UEU. Small excavated latten spoon with diamond stem, oval bowl and urn finial. No marks, c.1500-1530.

2 BUM. Very good English or possibly Flemish/-French early latten slip top spoon with a pronounced fig-shaped bowl and a flat hexagonal stem section. Touch of a sharp struck fleur de Lys . Length 161 mm

BBD. Very good excavated Lion 5ejant latten spoon with diamond stem and fig shaped bowl of the c. 1560 period. Touch of a pierced heart with initials 'F.. ?'. Length 174 mm.

MBE. English 5t John latten of superb quality with the whole except the apostle tinned. Mark inside spoon in a circle of I.W. flanking a pair of spoons illustrated by Homer p. 54 on a Lion Sejant spoon . Another example lVas excavated in Amsterdam at No. 2-14 Weespcnp/ats on Jan. 28, 1973 and is illustrated in "Opgravingen in Al1lsterd;I1l " p. 319, No. 602. Length 184mm. 3 UUD. English latten spoon of the 'simple ball seal top' type with figshaped bowl and a 'flattened' hexagonal stem of the c. 1570 period. Touch inside bowl within a beaded circular border by an unidentified pewterer, possibly with the initials 'I.N.'. Length 163 mm.

th ND Small English or Dutch late 16 early 17th century tinned latten spoon with acorn knop, fig shaped bowl and front of stem grooved by hand. Touch inside bowl of G and (P) flanking three spoons illustrated by Homer under both latten globe, seal top and slip top. This maker probably also used a 'double whited' touch when called/or (see Homer).

LD. English or Dutch latten St. Matthews apostle spoon originally tinned (and later badly re-tinned), with stem grooved by hand. Obscure mark of a spoon.

Length 184mm 4 RM. Small and rare Dutch pewter slip top cocoa spoon with a short rat-tail and a diamond stem-section. Crowned rose maker's touch struck under-neath bowl.

UD. English early 17th century pewter slip top spoon of hexagon stem section with owner's initials "WE" stamped inside bowl. Touch of E(H) flanking crossed spoons within a beaded circle, Homer p. 56 under 'slip top. Length 178 mll1.

UD. Small English mid to late 16th Century pewter slip top spoon of hexagon stem section. Mark of an "x" in a square inside a circular touch. Length 153 mm.

5 UD Small English mid to late 16th Century pewter slip top spoon of hexagonal stem section. Owner's initials " CT" inside bowl. The bowl has been re-attached to the stem and the touch lost during repair.

Length 165 mm.

English excavated tinned latten splayed end spoon c. early 17th century. Mark inside a beaded circle with two spoons and initials 'W.S.', Homer, p. 56 under 'slip top'. Length 181 mm.

AD. Excavated Hanoverian pewter rat tail spoon. Crowned X and London label plus a Dutch angel mark with 'I' ? and star with a fleur de Iys. A similar spoon is illustrated in "Opgravingen in Amsterdam ", p. 321, No. 605. Length 199 mm

6 eMB. English excavated pewter round end spoon with a short rat tail and owners' initials Lover MI. LTP touch No. 102, "R.I." and date 68 in a diamond touch struck three times on the back of the stem by Richard Jacob, London, OP 2572a. Transitional type, c. 1670 - 80. Jacob was free in 1668 and struck LTP102 (and not originally LTP166 as suggested by Cotterell.) Ex. Zene Walker collection, sold at the Bruton Knowles, Cheltenham, sale 4.5.1995. UUD English latten round end spoon excavated in the Netherlands with good nature's gilding covering the tinning. Touch inside bowl by the unidentified pewterer 'I.C ' with three spoons inside a beaded circle. Homer 'Five Centuries of base metal spoons', p. 53 (under "trifid spoons "). It is clear that either the manufacturer or the user attempted to 'modernize' the spoon by cutting two grooves into the end of the spoon in an attempt to emulate the early hand cut trifid style. C. 1670-80.

UD. Unusual rat tail pewter spoon with half round stem, and flat and rounded end with a ridge. Maker's initials "HG" on stem included in the mould. Possibly Flemish, c. 1720-50. Length 187 mm 7 Good and unusual pair of pewter spoons, bowl with shell pattern, stem with asymmetrical rococo pattern in the mould. Four hallmarks and London label on the back of stem by an English or Dutch pewterer, c. 1760-1780. APSl - 19. Length 210 mm.

Fiddle back spoon, probably German of the early 19th century. Acorn mark struck on the back of the stem.

English or Dutch small and very rare excavated latten and tinned trifid spoon. Circular touch inside bowl with 'DVBL TIND' in circular writing with a crowned heart, the crown with star above and below and initials '1.- C.' by an unidentified pewterer, c. 1680-90. The tinning is in pristine condition and the spoon was probably lost before use. This 'double tinning' will have to be properly researched. Excavated pewter and 'ordinGlY' tinned objects are invariably black when found whereas this example is silvelY in colour. The archeaologist who wrote 'Opgravingen in Amsterdam' state 'nickel plated' on many pewter and spoons which would be impossible in the case ofpew tel'. Length 11 7 mm

BD. Small and rare pewter rat tail trifid "cocoa spoon" with nature's gilding, excavated in Amsterdam. Obscure mark on stem, c. 1690.

Dutch excavated pewter trifid spoon with an early type of grooved rat tail and very good 'nature's gilding'. Good angel touch on back of stem with three initials 'CV.? by an unidentified pewterer, c. 1680-90. Length 171 111117.

Dutch excavated pewter trifid rat tail spoon with very good 'nature's gilding'. Mark on back of the top of the stem of an angel and ' ... ECKER' probably by Johannes Decker, Amsterdam. Th is spoon was probably lost before use. Length 181 111111

9 Excavated Dutch pewter trifid spoon with an early type of grooved rat tail with pristine 'nature's gilding'. Interesting touch by a Master of the Amsterdam spoon makers guild of a crown above a circle with the date 1689 in the crown and the th ree stacked 'saltires' or X's town mark of the city of Amsterdam. Pewterer's initials 'D. ?.' on top of the town mark and 'K. - K.' either side for 'kleine keur', declaring the lead content for this spoon from 1689 in Amsterdam (Dubbe, p. 92). Length 187 111111

Excavated Dutch pewter trifid pewter spoon with a short rat tail. Crowned rose touch with flagged-out initials 'D.W.' struck on the back of bowl. Length 176111111

10 Excavated Dutch pewter trifid pewter spoon with a short rat tail and an unusual 'resting' heel and. The stem with clear 'shaving' marks' visible on both sides, the stem also with a slight chamfer from top to underside. Crowned rose touch with initials 'I.D.V.' inside the crown and the letter 'L' in the centre of the rose indicating 'Iepel' or the special spoon alloy used by the Spoonmakers' Guilds, struck on the front of bowl.

Unusual trifid pewter spoon with circular bowl. Worn touch by an Amsterdam pewterer with 'K-K' for 'kleine keur' - indicating the spoon alloy.

English excavated and strip-cleaned trifid rat tail spoon with London hallmarks. The crowned leopard's head is identical to one of John Shorey's hallmarks suggesting the same engraver.

Dutch trifid spoon with a grooved rat tail. Shell pattern and a flower vase with stems surronding a heart with the initials 'LF'. Crowned rose with the initials 'HK' struck on the back by Hendrik Kamphof of Zwolie, born 1830. His son, Jacobus Arnoldus Kamphof, took over the business which closed with the start of WWII. Length 190 mm

CUD. Flemish pewter horse hoof knop spoon with a spiral stem, first half of the 17th Century, excavated in Amsterdam. Crowned rose with "C. ?" in the crown struck at the back of the spoon. This type is usually referred to as fi"om Rotterdam. Length 177mm.

UD. Dutch/Flemish pewter hoof knop spoon with off-set, square stem. Worn mark underneath bowl near the stem attachment. A spoon by the mid 171h CentlllY Brllges pewterer Andries de Net with similar outline and positioning of mark is illustrated by Verschaeve in Brugs Tin, p. 25. The spoon type with the off-set stem arrangement is illustrated by Dubbe, p. 287, ill. b. The spoon bears clear signs of "nalllre's gui/ding" bUI was cleaned some time ago. Length 174 mm, weight 59g.

12 Stump end excavated Dutch pewter spoon with hexagonal stem with a well finished stump and a fig leaf bowl, c. mid 17th century. Touch inside bowl of a crowned rose with 'I.W.' initials. A dark patch inside the bowl suggests an accumulation of acidic debris such as uric acid held here, thus also and interestingly indicating the exact level and position this spoon was resting in over a period of a few centuries. UUR. Flemish with iron blade with a cutler's mark excavated in Amsterdam . Octagonal wooden handle with and silver gilt inlay engraved in what appears to be a very early manner. The butt end with an engraved stylised flower. Pass. 15th Century? Length 226 mm

13 MDC. Flemish mid 16th Century silver guilt knife with iron blade with the cutler's mark inlaid with brass, excavated in Amsterdam. Handle decorated in the renaissance style with loving couples. A similar knife is illustrated in Klaus Marquardt "Europtiisches Essbe-steck", p. 51, ill. 136. Marquardt states on p. 51 that " earlier than 1600 are extra-ordinarily rare ". Length 208mm.

Knife with a well decorated handle with three apertures with traces of cement beddings for semi precious stones. A circular, silver gilt disc inserted below the finial. A rare pewterer's touch of a crowned 'P' struck on the side of the hand lie. This could also be the mark of Paris?

MD. Knife handle excavated in Amsterdam, showing the full-length figure of a 16th century gentleman in relief above a portrait of a lady with her arms crossed. Similar panels on the other side decorated with leaves and flowers. Remnants ofs teel blade below and the setting ofa semi precious stone mount above. Length 61111m .
