1 (114) Independent Project (Degree Project), 30 higher education credits Master of Fine Arts in Music, with specialization in Improvisation Performance Academy of Music and Drama, University of Gothenburg Spring 2019 Author: Johannes Bergmark Title: The Hell Harp of Hieronymus Bosch. The building of an experimental musical instrument, and a critical account of an experience of a community of musicians. Supervisors: Professor Anders Jormin, Professor Per Anders Nilsson Examiner: Senior Lecturer Joel Eriksson ABSTRACT Taking a detail from Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden Of Earthly Delights as a point of departure, an instrument is built for a musical performance act deeply involving the body of the musician. The process from idea to performance is recorded and described as a compositional and improvisational process. Experimental musical instrument (EMI) building is discussed from its mythological and sociological significance, and from autoethnographical case studies of processes of invention. The writer’s experience of 30 years in the free improvisation and new music community, and some basic concepts: EMIs, EMI maker, musician, composition, improvisation, music and instrument, are analyzed and criticized, in the community as well as in the writer’s own work. The writings of Christopher Small and surrealist ideas are main inspirations for the methods applied. Keywords: Experimental musical instruments, improvised music, Hieronymus Bosch, musical performance art, music sociology, surrealism Front cover: Hieronymus Bosch, The Garden of Earthly

Never Again Edited by Sally Keeble and Will Straw Again Edited by Sally Keeble and Will Never Fabian Special LESSONS FROM LABOUR’S KEY SEATS Edited by Sally Keeble and Will Straw Fabian Special The Fabian Society is Britain’s oldest political think tank. Since 1884 the Society has played a central role in developing political ideas and public policy on the left. Through a wide range of publications and events the Society influences political and public thinking, but also provides a space for broad and open-minded debate, drawing on an unrivalled external network and its own expert research and analysis. The Society is alone among think tanks in being a democratically-constituted membership organisation, with almost 7,000 members. During its history the membership has included many of the key thinkers on the British left and every Labour Prime Minister. Today it counts over 200 parliamentarians in its number. Member-led activity includes 70 local Fabian societies, the Scottish and Welsh Fabians, the Fabian Women’s Network and the Young Fabians, which is itself the leading organisation on the left for young people to debate and influence political ideas. The Society was one of the original founders of the Labour Party and is constitutionally affiliated to the party. It is however editorially, organisationally and financially independent and works with a wide range of partners of all political persuasions and none. Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences 53 Attar and the West: The Role of Translation Ailar Moghaddam Jahangiri Science and Research Branch, Islamic Azad University, Iran Amin Karimnia Islamic Azad University, Fasa Branch, Iran. Introduction AbūHamīd bin AbūBakrIbrāhīmor Farid-uddin Attar Neishabouri or the Attar of Nishapur, was a Persian Muslim poet, a theoretician of Sufism and a hagiographer of the 6th and the early 7th century, who had an eternal influence on Persian poetry and Sufism (Kazemi, 2012). He was born in 530 (or likely) 537 A.H. in Kadkan, a village near Neishabour. Different authorities have determined various dates of his death, but the most reliable one according to his contemporaries – which was repeatedly mentioned in his poems – was in 627, i.e. he lived for around 90 years. Also, there is no exact evidence regarding the cause of his death and all the told stories were merely legends with no origin. His father also lived in Neishabour and was a chemist of his time. After his death, Attar continued his father's profession until the greatspiritual revolution occurred in his life and turned a new lease of life towards poetry and Sufism. There are different stories narrated by different authors about the spiritual revolution of Attar (Nafisi, 2003). This narration has been written by a French author, Louis Dubeux (1841), in a book named “La Perse”. And, it seems that he has quoted this narration from the introduction of Silvestre de Sacy (1816) on Pandnamah of Attar: A Dervish was gazing at the shop, his eyes filled with tears while letting out a sigh.
