FOSTER CARE CRISIS continued from page 9 tangible directions on community care. I also shared with her that as Christ-fol - lowers, fostering is a sacred responsibil - ity that models Jesus' love for us. Just as God adopts us into His family, we have the means to adopt these children— even if only briefly into our homes and forever into our hearts. The care of children transcends all that divides us and encourages me to reach across artificial lines. I have friends who are foster parents from many (and even no) faith traditions. I have Republican, Democrat, and Independent foster parent friends. We come from different nationalities, eth - nicities, socioeconomic means, and the list goes on. But our role as foster par - ents draws us together in solidarity and advocacy for often-forgotten, voiceless little ones in need of homes and people who care for them. In a world divided by politics and faith, I love the unity I feel with others regarding this issue. Let us come together in heart, mind, and spirit to solve this crisis. Ed Popkess People of faith are called to do no less, and Christians are called to do more. Warner would undoubtedly agree with that analysis. In his half-hour speech at the induction ceremony, wearing the tra - ditional gold jacket given to Hall of Fame inductees, Warner recounted his unlikely and unorthodox journey to NFL stardom after a collegiate career at Northern Iowa University. He went undrafted in 1994, and the Green Bay Packers cut him after a brief tryout. His rise from stocking shelves at a grocery store in Iowa to star - ring for the St. Louis Rams in 1999 has been well documented. In the Rams’ Super Bowl win in 2000, Warner connected with wide receiver Isaac Bruce for a game-winning touch - down with less than two minutes remain - ing. Warner won the game’s MVP award after throwing for a Super Bowl-record 414 yards and made a strong statement about his faith in a post-game interview with Mike Tirico. “Kurt, first things first, tell me about the final touchdown pass to Isaac,” Tirico asked Warner. “Well, first things first, I’ve got to thank my Lord and Savior up above,” Warner replied. “Thank you, Jesus!” That exchange proved to be a defining one for Warner, who referenced it at the conclusion of his induction speech. “Many felt I was thanking Him for orchestrating a Super Bowl win, or mak - ing my passes fly straighter, or causing my opponents to make more mistakes,” Warner said. “But those people had it all wrong.” Instead, Warner said, that gesture was his way of expressing gratitude for all that Jesus had done for him. “Now, love it or hate it, that opening scene captured the imagination of the sports world, and the words became the heart of my story,” Warner said. “The rest, as they say, is history, bringing us to this: The famous last words, and the only place this extraordinary journey can end. “His final moment was for me,” Warner told the crowd. “Mine is for Him. Thank you, Jesus!” Topeka Metro Voice ______MetroVoiceNews.com ______Facebook/MetroVoiceNews ______October 2017 • 21 n EVENT CALENDER CONTINUED Daddy's Girls Inc. Clean “green.” Cleaning prod - ucts can be made with ingredients that are harmful to the environ - ment, as well as your family’s health. Make sure you know what is in your household cleaners before using them and, whenever possible, look for cleaners that have been certified as green.

Deal with dust. Even if you don’t struggle with allergies or asthma, over time, dust particles can be unhealthy for you and your family. Vacuum frequently and use a wet mop on floors without carpet to limit the formation of dust bun - nies throughout your home. Clean and replace your vacuum’s filter frequently to ensure you’re trap - ping maximum dust. Also regular - ly wash towels, linens and other textiles, including window treat - ments.

Replace air filters. Older, dirty air filters can circulate dust, pollen and other particles throughout your home. They can also cause your air conditioner and heater to run less efficiently, which can result in higher energy consumption. Rather than pushing potentially harmful dust particles into your house and causing your systems to work overtime, inspect your air fil - ter often and change it regularly. You might also want to consider installing a whole-home air purifi - er or placing portable air purifiers in frequently used rooms.

Reduce energy and natural resource usage. Try installing timers on your lights so they turn on only at specified times. To take it a step further, consider installing lighting with vacancy sensors that automatically shut off the lights 24 • October 2017 ______MetroVoiceNews.com ______Facebook/MetroVoiceNews ______Topeka Metro Voice
