Beyond the Bog Road Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul
HOT SEASON FOR YOUNG PEOPLE 2012-2013 TEACHER GUIDEBOOK Beyond the Bog Road Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul Photo by Luke Ratray Regions Bank A Note from our Sponsor For over 125 years Regions has been proud to be a part of the Middle Tennessee community, growing and thriving as our area has. From the opening of our doors on September 1, 1883, we have committed to this community and our customers. One area that we are strongly committed to is the education of our students. We are proud to support TPAC’s Humanities Outreach in Tennessee Program. What an important sponsorship this is – reaching over 25,000 students and teachers – some students would never see a performing arts production with- out this program. Regions continues to reinforce its commitment to the communities it serves and in ad- dition to supporting programs such as HOT, we have close to 200 associates teaching financial literacy in classrooms this year. Thank you, teachers, for giving your students this wonderful opportunity. They will certainly enjoy the experience. You are creating memories of a lifetime, and Regions is proud to be able to help make this op- portunity possible. Jim Schmitz Executive Vice President Area Executive Middle Tennessee Area Dear Teachers, It would be easy to say that Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul – an ensemble led by a Celtic fiddler who is one of the original performers in both Riverdance and Table of Contents Cherish the Ladies – is an Irish-American band. Considering the popularity of Irish music in our country Irish Music Timeline (2) these days, that would also make good marketing sense. -

Joseph Shabalala Vice Radio Bantu
the 1987 Grammy for Album of the Year. Ladysmith Black Mambazou, too, would Swansongs win Grammy Awards—five in all, the last in 2018 for Shaka Zulu Revisited: 30th Anniversary Celebration as Best World Music Album. They would also collaborate with the likes of Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and Mavis Staples, and appear in the Michael Jackson filmMoonwalker . They earned a Tony nomination for their score for the 1993 Broadway play The Song of Jacob Zulu, in which they performed as a chorus. And that same year, they accompanied Nelson Mandela to Oslo when he accepted his Nobel Peace Prize. Bhekizizwe Joseph Siphatimandla Mxo- veni Mshengu Bigboy Shabalala was born on Aug. 28, 1941, on a white-owned farm near the town of Ladysmith, out in the hills of KwaZulu-Natal, where his parents, Jon- athan Mluwane Shabalala and Nomandla Elina Shabalala, worked. Joseph, the eldest of eight children, left school at 12, after his father died. As a teenager, he moved to Durban to work in a textile factory and sang in local vocal groups—the Durban Choir Swansongs and The Highlanders. In 1959, he formed Ezimnyama, which he renamed Ladysmith Black Mambazo. They featured several of Shabalala’s brothers and cousins singing. The mbube and isicathamiya music that the all-male group sang originally emerged from the mining camps and industrial worksites created by migrant workers toiling far from home. Singing late into the 1947-2019 night, they established harmony singing contests to relieve their after-work boredom. These contests played a significant role in the development of traditional choral music 1941-2020 in South Africa. -
Suoni Della Murgia Nel Parco

The following article appears courtesy of Paul Kotapish, a musician in Open House, The Quirks, Hillbillies from Mars, and more recently, Wake the Dead. Paul is also a writer, illustrator, and web editor; in the words of Matt Kramer at Acoustic Guitar, he's also a " heckuva nice guy as well!" Paul generously sent this article ' ready to publish ' to Irish Bouzouki and for that we are very grateful. Thanks Paul! ANCIENT TONES The bouzouki’s long journey from rembetika to rock ’n’ roll and beyond By Paul Kotapish copywrite 2000 Mention the word bouzouki, and people think either of Zorba the Greek or G.I. Joe’s favorite weapon. The cognoscenti might conjure images of smoky tavernas, free-flowing retsina, and crockery flung in abandon. Some Celtic music fans would associate the bouzouki with Irish jigs and reels, but few would link it with bluegrass and old-time hoe-downs, and virtually no one would make the leap to Swedish fiddle tunes, rock ’n’ roll, and jazz. But the bouzouki has found its place in all these musical styles, and it’s popping up more and more in the hands of guitarists. GREEK BEGINNINGS The bouzouki’s roots extend back to the long-necked lutes of ancient Persia and Byzantium. The earliest bouzoukis are very similar to the contemporary Turkish saz, and the bouzouki appellation was probably derived from the Turkish name for the mid-sized bozouk saz. The saz family of instruments is characterized by bowl-shaped backs (often carved from a single piece of mulberry wood); long, thin necks with tied gut frets; a free-floating bridge; and three double or triple courses of wire strings. -

The only problem, she says, is that nobody's driving, and the 6ils tellds to get lost." er years of wandering, Steeleye Span have found their way, recovering a sense of identity that was largely lost in the I 980s. Their first studio album in even years, Time, shows them to be muchA like the Steeleye Span of the mid-1970s, "The poinl committed to combining traditional music with rock and roll in powerful and interesting ways. "The we meel point we meet at is traditional music," says Prior, the band 's long-time singer. "And rock ... rock only in its 01 i I application to what we do." Iro~ilionol mUlic " This firm resolve is particularly appropriate in light of the band's histor y. It was the first ensemble in Britain that was put together specifically to play "folk-rock" Of, as some wou ld rather say, "electric traditional music." The years have since brought other material into the band's repertoire, ranging from 1950s rock and roll to Berthold Brecht. But, at every concert since they were formed twenty-seven years ago, Steeleye Span has played traditional songs in a folk-rock style. -
