World Music Central.org Celtic Music Selections for St. Patrick’s Day 2014 By TJ Nelson – March 12, 2014 It’s that time of year again where the warm, rich tang of a pint of Guinness, the sharp lushness of Irish whiskey and the bright, beautiful sounds of Clannad fill the air. St. Patrick’s Day is soon upon us and so it is only good and right that World Music Central offers up some musical suggestions to get you in the mood for a reel around the dance floor or lull you with the green dreams of spring. First up is Loreena McKennitt’s 2-CD deluxe edition of The Journey So Far—The Best of Loreena McKennitt. The first CD is packed with goodies like “The Mystic’s Dream,” “Bonny Portmore,” “The Mummers’ Dance,” “Stolen Child,” “The Lady of Shalott,” “Huron Beltane Fire Dance” and “The Old Ways.” The second CD is a collection of highlight songs taken from Ms. McKennitt’s 2012 Mainz, Germany live “A Midsummer Night’s Tour.” This boasts live performances of “The Star of the County Down,” “The Dark Night of the Soul,” “Beneath a Phrygian Sky” and “Caravanserai.” Ms. McKennitt’s lovely voice will have you weeping into your beer in no time. Padraig Rynne – Notify If you are looking for something a little dramatic, you might want to check out Brian Keane’s Copper, the soundtrack to the BBC series Copper. Power packed with Cherish the Ladies Joanie Madden and Eileen Ivers and banjo master Eric Weissberg, Mr. Keane offers up a whole host of short atmospheric tracks and some full length tracks from the television series like “Copper Title,” “Lost and Longing/Ammie’s Theme” and “Kevin and Elizabeth.” Even if you never caught the series there’s some lovely pieces on this CD. -

Gabriel Donohue (Host Friday night Rambling House) Gabriel was born in Athenry, a walled medieval town in CountyGalway founded by Meyler De Bermingham in the 12th Century AD. Small wonder his music is filled with a strong sense of history. Add to this his love of storytelling through song which belongs to another time and place. By age fourteen he was a member of the Leitrim Ramblers Ceili Band. Many summers were spent in the Connemara Gaeltacht where he played with such local legends as Tomas Mc Keown and Tony Molloy. He then joined a showband called Magic which had numerous Top- Ten hits in Ireland. Here he got a taste of the entertainment side of music and appeared on Irish Television. America was calling and a kind Uncle and Aunt in Darien, Connecticut, made the young lad welcome. Thus began what was to be a great love affair with New York City. Here he sought out traditional music legends like Andy McGann and Johnny Cronin and saw the sun come up on Second Avenue most Sunday mornings as the reels and jigs, as well as the occasional song, flowed. In New York he studied fingerstyle guitar, musical theater and voice and honed his skills as a music producer, eventually opening his own studio called Cove Island Productions. Construction was completed by accordionist/carpenter John Whelan. He has embraced many of the new developments in non-linear digital recording and editing while also utilizing vintage tube gear. -
New York University Is Requesting Funds from the Grammy Foundation
2008 GRAMMY Foundation Archiving & Preservation Grant Program Application New York University 1. New York University requests $40,000 from the Grammy Foundation Archiving & Preservation Grant Program to digitally preserve approximately 180 hours of field recordings and interviews taped by the Irish musician, ethnomusicologist and folklorist Mick Moloney. They are part of a collection of 811 hours of taped performance of Irish American music, as well as oral histories and interviews, made by Dr. Moloney between 1961 and 2005, when they were acquired by NYU for its Archives of Irish America. 2. This phase of preserving the Moloney collection will concentrate on approximately 180 reel- to-reel and cassette tapes that were made at public performances and sessions and in musicians’ homes between the late 1980s and early 1990s. Moloney made many of the cassette recordings on his Sony TCD 5 (the state of the art cassette recorder at that time) in situations in which a large, conspicuous tape recorder would have been inappropriate. Because of the variability of quality in the cassette housing structures, these recordings are now very much at risk; several have already become detached and urgently need remedial care. These recordings feature many older musicians of that time such as Andy McGann, Eugene O'Donnell, Tom Doherty, Johnny McGreevy and Al Purcell. Other tapes capture in their most formative years young emerging artists such as Liz Carroll, Joanie Madden, Brian Conway, Billy McComiskey, Brendan Mulvihill, Seamus Egan and Eileen Ivers, many of whom are internationally known today. Many other recordings track the evolution of the groundbreaking, National Endowment for the Arts-funded ensemble, The Green Fields of America, which introduced Irish traditional music and dance to a general audience nationwide; until that time, they had been largely unknown outside the Irish American community. -

L'idea è quella di riportare il piede al passo sulle pietre e sui tratturi della Murgia, recuperando quel rapporto ancestrale con la terra, i silenzi, i paesaggi e le voci della natura viva che abbiamo perso con la frenetica modernità. E di farlo unendo natura e musica in un progetto unico nel suo genere in tutto il mezzogiorno d'Italia. Per questo, sono bandite le auto e si privilegia il contatto fisico: runners, trekkers, ciclisti, passeggiatori, osservatori degli spazi saranno i principali fruitori di questo progetto. Il progetto Suoni della Murgia nel Parco parte dal radunare musicisti da tutto il mondo sulla Murgia barese, impegnandoli in concerti all'aurora, al crepuscolo, alla sera, nei luoghi naturalistici più belli ed affascinanti del Parco Nazionale dell'Alta Murgia. I concerti saranno tutti ad impatto zero, eseguiti in acustico ed inseriti nel circuito delle masserie del Parco. Tutti gli eventi in programma saranno raggiungibili esclusivamente a piedi ed in bici, accompagnati nel percorso dal punto di raccolta al luogo dell'evento dalle guide del Parco. Il punto di raccolta fungerà da parcheggio per le auto. Gli itinerari per cicloturisti, runners ed escursionisti saranno realizzati dal Parco dell'Alta Murgia e collegati agli eventi di Suoni della Murgia. Ad ogni evento, il Parco abbinerà una delle masserie del Parco per la promozione e la degustazione dei sapori e dei prodotti locali. -
