We are back and one of the first things we are dealing with is the upcoming Franklin Local Board Plan.

You will be asked to give your views and there is some new technology being introduced to make it easier for you to let us know what is important to you, as we outline the direction for our communities in the early years of the new decade.

We will keep you advised on that via the Franklin Local Board Facebook page and on ’s OurAuckland website.

We are keen to hear though from Clevedon residents about a targeted rate to enable them to connect to the new reticulated water system Watercare is installing through Clevedon to support growth.

We are asking for the rate, which would allow residents to repay a loan through their rates, to be included in consultation on Auckland Council’s annual budget.

Auckland Council wants as many people as possible to connect to the system, but it could cost as much as $50,000. We believe repaying loans as part of your rates would make that cost more bearable, and certainly understand not everyone has $50,000 sitting around.

Quite a few residents have asked about a payment plan to spread connection costs and Watercare has asked for a loan repayment targeted rate to be included in annual budget consultations.

In other news the Clevedon Business and Residents Association is hosting the business community at a meeting at Hallertau at 6pm on 17 February to discuss opportunities presented by the Hunua Trail, a new 44-kilometre walking and cycling trail that will link Clevedon to Kaiaua.

The trail will be walkable over three days using huts as overnight accommodation, while cyclists could cover it in a day, and the board believes it could offer economic opportunities to the area because visitors will need food, accommodation and supplies.

The wider community will get a chance to have input when the board hosts a community event at the Clevedon District Centre on 14 March from 11am to 2pm.

While the holidays might be a fading memory, summer lingers on and there are still free events local boards support that you can take advantage of.

One of those is free kayaking at Maraetai for those aged seven and up. Council’s Out and About team will be there on February 15 and 29 from 10am to 2pm with enough kayaks to ensure everyone gets the chance to take to the water.

The team will be set up near the playground at the boat club end of the beach and there’s no need to book, with six half-hour sessions running from 10am.

If watching a movie under the stars appeals more, the board is also part of Movies in Parks, which is screening Men in Black: International at Te Puru on 4 April at 7.30pm, with pre-film entertainment from 5.30pm.

If you see something that needs repairing, removing or reporting please phone 09 301 0101 or log it at www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz.

Clevedon Community & Business Association

Hi everyone, As you can see in this Round Up, the new Hunua Trail is coming and with it, all the exciting opportunities for businesses, existing and new, in our area. This new walking and cycling trail between Clevedon and Kaiaua will attract many visitors, and all these visitors will need support services – food, bike maintenance and repairs, transfers to parts of the route or back to where they started, accommodation, etc., - and it’s entirely possible they will want to stay on and see other attractions in the area. Auckland Council have asked the Clevedon CBA to organise some events to introduce the Hunua Trail to the Clevedon community and businesses. We will hold two events;  Monday 17th February 6pm at Hallertau, 26 Clevedon Kawakawa Rd with a focus on identifying local economic opportunities, and

 Saturday 14th March 11 – 2pm at the Clevedon District Centre to inform the wider community on what and where is the Hunua Trail. We would love you to come and join us, and hopefully be as excited as we are about this opportunity for the businesses of our area, and this chance to show off the Hunua Ranges. If you can join us for either event, please RSVP to [email protected]

Victoria Richards, Chair, Clevedon CBA

P.S. Last minute judging at Christmas time saw Clevedon Flowers win the meal voucher & trophy for the most festive street front display, with Puchi coming a very close second. Thank you to all who participated so festively.

This includes keeping branches of trees clear of driveways. If there is an emergency any delays will reduce response time.

Friends of Te Wairoa Update

Last year Friends of Te Wairoa received funding from the Auckland Council for creation of three part time positions to assist the organisation in achieving its environmental improvement goals. One of those positions is the Catchment Facilitator, whose role is to support those in the Wairoa catchment who wish to undertake planting, fencing, weeding projects within the catchment and give advice on funding etc.

Recently, interest from about a half dozen property owners in the Hunua area who individually share quite small stretches of the Wairoa River, will potentially result in a length of the river approaching 2kms see a coordinated weed removal and replanting. Small things do add up, so if you are interested in getting some advice please contact our Catchment Facilitator Tim Biggs on [email protected]

We will also be holding our annual riparian planting workshop in the coming months. If you would like to pre-register for the event please email Katie on [email protected]. And keep an eye on our Facebook page for further event details. Friends of Te Wairoa Nursery The FOTW nursery holds weekly volunteer sessions for anyone who is interested. Join Jodie every Friday morning from 9 am at the Nursery where we are potting up harakeke (flax) and ti kouka (cabbage trees) ready for the 2020 planting season. The nursery is situated behind the co-op in Clevedon Village or contact Jodie on [email protected] Please bring a sunhat, water and closed shoes.

Bait and Trap Days The number of properties participating in pest control has been steadily growing. In 2020 we are looking to leap forward! If you haven’t yet got on the bandwagon and made use of the educational bait and trap days and picked up supplies to get you started, there is one at the Hall on 23 February, 11am – 1pm. All welcome to attend. We appreciate the support from Auckland Council in holding these events. If you are unable to attend but are still interested in knowing more, please email Lenny at [email protected]. **********************************

LOCAL SNIPPETS

- The Clevedon Superette is under renovations – moved the Post Office boxes to make way (watch this space)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Andrew Bayly National MP for Hunua

Different challenge lies ahead Happy New Year everyone! I hope all of you had good break over the summer. This time last year I was writing a column about my trip to Jordan to retrace the route of Lawrence of Arabia. Hard to believe that 12 months have gone by. My summer break this year was much more sedate – time spent with my family and friends, resting, recharging and planning for the exciting year that lies ahead.

Of course, 2020 is election year and for me this election campaign will be doubly challenging as I come to grips with new electorate boundaries. The proposed changes won’t be finalised until April but it is probable that Clevedon, Kawakawa Bay, Orere Point, Hunua, Ararimu, Bombay, Beachlands and Whitford will be included in the redrawn Papakura electorate. The Representation Commission proposes renaming the Hunua seat Port Waikato and shifting its area south to include Tuakau, Onewhero, Port Waikato, Pokeno, Maramarua, Mercer, Meremere and Te Kauwhata. I can confirm that I will be seeking selection as National’s candidate for Port Waikato. In the meantime, being a local electorate MP, it’s really important to me that I represent an area well and I will be working hard to maintain the relationships I’ve made with all the people in the Hunua electorate while developing connections with the people and communities in the redrawn Port Waikato seat. I will continue to hold regular constituency clinics at the electorate office and in other parts of the electorate for people who find it difficult to travel to Pukekohe. If you’d like to make an appointment to see me or to find out when the next mobile clinic is, please phone Judith on 09 238 5976.
