2018

The Fall Festival of October is a great month for many people. It is the beginning of the fall season with its many festivities and traditions. We begin to don sweaters or light jackets to fend off the crisp chill in the air. We take in the beauty of colors as the leaves change, and we hear the crunching of fallen leaves under our feet.

The Feast of St. Francis comes early in October which means that it is time to bring our beloved pets to for a blessing. Some enjoy sitting around campfires and others making hearty soups this time of the year. Many of our young folks are filled with the anticipation of celebrating Halloween!

Have you ever wondered about the origins of Halloween? Most of us probably don’t think of it as a Christian holiday. But, it might surprise you to learn that Halloween is, indeed, a Christian feast! Perhaps less so now, but historically, Halloween was part of a liturgical season focused around death. It was called Allhallowtide.

Since the earliest days, the Church has celebrated All ’ Day on November 1 st . It was sometimes called, Hallowmas or All Hal- lows. “Hallow” meaning holy or , and “mas” short for . It was a way of recognizing the early and saints of the early Church. i

As with other feasts and holy days, such as and , All Hallows (Saints’) Day is celebrated with a the evening be- fore. That vigil became All Hallows’ Eve. This comes from the Jewish practice of beginning days at sunset, not midnight, a practice ii that carried over into early Christianity. All Hallow’s Eve was often a day of fasting and praying in preparation for All Hallows Day . In some cultures, such as the Celtic culture, All Hallow’s Eve has been thought to be a “thin place” or “sacred time” where we can sense the closeness of God.

By the Middle Ages, praying for the dead was an important part of Christian piety. Eventually, November 2 nd became a day of re- membering the dead, All Souls Day. So, when we celebrate All Saints Day, we recognize the – those who have gone before us – asking how we should live as saints now and how we intend to pass on the faith to the next generation. On All Souls Day, we remember and pray for all the faithful departed, especially those closest to us like our relatives and friends. At one time, All Hallows Eve, All Hallows, and All Souls was celebrated as its own called Allhallowtide. iii St. Matthew’s will hold a prayer service to celebrate All Saints/ Souls on Thursday, November 1 at 7:00 pm

While dressing up in costumes and trick-or-treating and celebrating Halloween is fun and an important family time, I wonder if it is also an opportunity for families and friends to perhaps recover or revive an “All Hallow’s Eve” intention. How might you mark the beginning of Allhallowtide, this three-day period of celebration and remembrance?
