Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, October 27Th, 2019 5711 SW 9th Des Moines, Iowa 50315-5006 Pastor: Fr. PJ McManus chrishekingparish.org (515) 285-2888 Associate: Fr. George Komo Parish Office Hours: Monday—Thursday 8:00 am—5:00 PM, Friday 8:00 AM—Noon Hispanic Pastor: Fr. Jose Reynaldo Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time th Sunday, October 27 , 2019 This weekend we’re hosting our Annual Parish Auction. This event is not only the biggest single fundraiser for the year, but it’s also a terrific time. Always held the weekend closest to Halloween, we encourage people to come in costume and each year there’s a different theme. This year the theme is superheroes, and as you know, Father George and I have been voted upon to wind up in some very specific costumes. You just might be surprised who shows up. This theme of superheroes is especially appropriate for the time of year as we’re about to enter into one of the most important—and one of my favorite—periods of the Church Year: Allhallowtide. You’ve probably never seen that word before; try this: All Hallows Tide. Closer? Think tide like Christmastide or Eastertide (just meaning time), and All Hallows is “All Holy” as in “All the Holy Ones”—meaning, the saints. And the saints are, of course, the superhe- roes of the faith. Some of the saints seem to have superpowers: Padre Pio could read souls (like Dr. Strange); some had super- strength (St. Boniface or St. Moses the Black); and some could even fly like Superman (read up on St. Joseph of Cu- pertino). Of course, in the Church we don’t refer to these so much as powers or abilities, but as gifts or charisms— grace building on our natural dispositions and abilities to help us build up the body of Christ. But most heroes, both in the comic books and in real life don’t have any exceptional abilities, they just have exceptional hearts and souls, which enable extraordinary lives. Last week I was privileged to celebrate Mass at the home of two of our parish’s superheroes: Joe and Joanne Palmer celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary. We had a wonderful time together, and they even gave me wisdom to pass along to the couple I was scheduled to marry the next day. What struck me most of their humility and their fidelity—both to God and to each other. “Most people think they’re the star or the center of their own story,” Joanne said. “It’s when you realize you’re not that you can really start living.” Joe said something similar and then added, “But remember, Father, it’s always quality over quantity.” He would know; he’s had both. Let’s pray that we can too. You can give beyond your life through a bequest to Christ the King Church/School in your will. It began on 11th October 2012, exactly fifty years to the day from the start of Vatican II, and continues to the feast of Christ the King on 24th November 2013, just before Advent that year. During the Year of Faith, we are recalling the events of the Council and studying its various documents. My particular interest being liturgy, I have spent quite a lot of time on that subject, re-reading the Council’s document, the Constitution on the Liturgy, usually called Sacrosanctum Concilium (the first two words of its Latin text). I have been invited to lead several discussions and give some talks on the Constitution. My knowledge of the Constitution as well as my appreciation of its teaching about the liturgy, and especially on the Eucharist, are both being deepened as a result.

SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING Celebrated on the last Sunday of the liturgical year, the Solemnity of Christ the King was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 with his encyclical Quas primas to respond to growing secularism. The Holy Father saw that attempting to “thrust Jesus Christ and his holy law” out of public life would result in continuing discord among people and nations. The Solemnity reminds the faithful that Christ reigns as king of the entire world forever, and it en- courages Catholics to respond to this reality. Pope Pius XI notes: “The kingship and empire of Christ have been recognized in the pious custom, practiced by many families, of dedicating themselves to the Sacred Heart of Jesus; not only families have performed this act of dedication, but nations, too, and kingdoms” (Quas primas, 26).

  • Reflection for the Feast of Christ the King
Reflection for the Feast of Christ the King Almighty ever-living God, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of the universe, grant we pray, that the whole creation, set free from slavery, may render your majesty service and ceaselessly proclaim your praise. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Collect for Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe The Feast of Christ the King that we celebrate today is a relatively recent addition to the Liturgical Calendar. Pope Pius XI instituted this Feast in 1925 with his encyclical Quas Primas (In the First), and the Feast was first celebrated on October 31, 1926. Due to concern about a growing secularism and nationalism in the world Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King to remind all of us of the universal nature of our Lord and the connection that we have to one another due to the fact that we are all part of God’s creation. Viewing Christ as the King of the Universe is not an idea that developed in the 20th century, rather this concept dates back to the start of Christianity and has its roots in the Jewish faith and the belief in the Messiah, the Savior of the world. We can read from the works of St. Cyril of Alexandria who was born in 376 and died in 444 and was the Bishop of Alexandria Egypt.
