The miracle involved a fetus in the womb that was diagnosed with the fatal condition of fetal hydrops. The parents prayed to Fr. McGivney to intercede to God to save their baby. Their son was saved and is 5 years old. Fr. McGivney's intentions in founding what was to become the Knights of Columbus was a means to prevent Catholic men from entering anti-Catholic secret societies and to be of service and support to widows and orphans. Today, the Knights of Columbus are often remembered for their tootsie roll drives. The Knights are also involved with blood drives, special Olympics, coats for kids, praying the rosary, support of Catholic teachings, morals, and family life. They support religious vocations with financial, moral, and spiritual assistance. There are over 2 million Knights worldwide. Their emphasis is seen in their service and support to the Catholic Church, the community, and the family with the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. S`31, N*7_,7 1, 2020 AYY SJ`’ D1—AYYGYY+J37 This liturgical year the Solemnity of All Saints Day falls on Sunday, November 1. Saturday (October 31), Sunday (November 1) and Monday (November 2) we celebrate the Triduum of Allhallowtide. The word "allhallowtide” was first used in 1471 to describe these 3 days. The word "hallow" is a synonym of saint and holy. During these days we remember those who have died including martyrs, saints and the faithful departed. Solemnities such as Christmas, Easter and Pentecost begin on the eve or vigil of the day of solemnity and so begins the Triduum of Allhallowtide with evening prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours on Saturday, October 31, All Saints Eve (Halloween). Pope Boniface IV (? - 615) rededicated the Roman Pantheon to "St. Mary and all the martyrs in 609. Pope Gregory III (? - 741) at the Oratory on St. Peter's of Rome displayed the relics of the Apostles and all the saints, martyrs, and confessors for veneration of the faithful. In 835 Pope Gregory IV (? - 844) established November 1 as the day of All Saints to be celebrated. It was at the Abbey in Cluny in 998 that St. Odilo of Cluny (962 - 1049) established November 2 as a day for the monks of Cluny to visit the graves of the departed brother monks, pray for the departed faithful and pray especially for those souls in Purgatory. In the early Christian church, it was common to visit the catacombs and burial sites of saints, martyrs, relatives, and other departed souls. It has become a long tradition in the Church to visit the graves of loved ones during the month of November and pray for the departed love ones. All Saints Eve has been celebrated in different cultures with some people wearing masks and costumes to disguise one's identity from the departed believing the veil between the afterlife and the material world thinned during this time. Others fasted and prayed in preparation of All Saints Day. All Saints Day is celebrated with Mass calling to mind all those holy men and women who share in the beatific vision of heaven. In some churches the relics of the saints and martyrs are brought out for veneration by the faithful. And, in other churches which do not possess relics have people dress up as saints and martyrs as part of the day's celebration.
