This isn’t the Triduum most of us would think of — the Easter Triduum — but rather a lesser-known Triduum which has been called in the past “Allhallowtide.” Allhallowtide consists of the following days: Oct 31 (All Hallow’s Eve, shortened to “Halloween”), Nov 1 (All Saints’ Day), and Nov 2 (All Souls’ Day). Historically speaking, Halloween developed simply as a night vigil to prepare for the great feast of All Saints’ Day. All the greatest feast days in the Church calendar have had, at least at one point or another in their history, a vigil the night before as preparation for the day to come. So in that sense, “Allhallowtide” is really just two feast days (All Saints’ and All Souls), with a vigil (Halloween) attached to the first of those. So, what is there to say about these two feast days? It is helpful to first zoom out to get a macro-view of who makes up the Catholic Church. There are three main groups. First, the Church Triumphant, which are those who have made it to heaven. We celebrate these people on All Saints’ Day (Nov 1). “All saints” means not only the official canonized saints of the Church, but also anyone else in heaven who hasn’t been officially canonized on earth (i.e. “un-canonized saints”). The word “saint” just means “holy one,” so anyone in heaven is technically a “saint.” The second group that makes up the Church is the Church penitent (often called the “Church suffering”). This group is comprised of all the souls in purgatory. It is these souls that we pray for on All Souls’ Day (Nov 2) to wrap up the “Allhallowtide Triduum.” The final group that makes up the Catholic Church is the Church militant, which is all of us still living on earth. This week, as a bridge between All Saints’ Day (Friday) and All Souls’ Day (Saturday), we’ll be hosting all-night Exposition of the Holy Eucharist here in the church. This is a particularly powerful opportunity to commit to an hour of prayer for all those in your families and among your friends who have died. It is a very important act for us to pray for all those who have departed from this life. Many saints have received messages from the Lord Himself relating how powerful our prayers are for those who have died, and we ought to take these messages to heart! Finally, at the end of our all-night Eucharistic Adoration, I will celebrate a sung Mass in the extraordinary form for the Feast of All Souls’ Day. It will be dark and early, at 7:00am, and it will be a beautiful Mass! In the extraordinary form of the Mass (often called, colloquially, the “Latin Mass,” the “Tridentine Mass,” the “Gregorian Mass,” or even just the “Old Mass”), one of the unique things that happens on All Souls’ Day is that a catafalque (an apparatus used to support a casket), is set up just outside the sanctuary of the church, draped in black cloth, surrounded by six tall candlesticks. After Mass is finished, the priest dons a black cope and does what is called the “Rite of Absolution” over the catafalque, which represents all the Faithful Departed. The Rite of Absolution is comprised of prayers which call to mind the day of final judgment, and which petition the Lord to release or “absolve” all the dead of their sins so that they might be united to Him in heaven. This unique ritual, combined with the small gregorian chant schola that we will have for the early morning Mass, should make it a truly unique and powerful experience of the Church’s sacred liturgy, and another great opportunity to pray for all the deceased! - Fr.
