OUTDOOR KITCHEN October 3, 2020

The Kitchen Team has been gearing up for a soup sale over the summer. Our extreme shopper has been gathering ingredients when there were sales to her likening, we’ve had some ingredients frozen that we need to use and we had our annual corn freezing workshop a few weeks ago.

Unfortunately, due to Covid, consistory voted to not allow the Fall Yard Sale participation or the Bazaar in the church building: sad, sad, sad.

However, I’ve always lived with the notion that “where there’s a will, there’s a way.” So, the Kitchen Team has decided to take our soup sales outside in what we are going to call our “Outdoor Kitchen Sale” on Saturday, October 3rd.

We will be making Chicken Corn with rivels and without and Ham and Bean Soup. We will be selling our soup by the quart as well as over the luncheon hours by the bowl with a hot dog, dessert and drink for one price. We’re thinking cookies, cakes or brownies for dessert and iced tea, lemonade, and water to drink. Of course, we will need a few donations from our excellent bakers to fulfill our menu and we will be asking that you pre-wrap two cookies in a baggie (depending on their size) as well as cut the cakes and brownies at home. We will provide storage containers for them if you need.

There will be very limited traffic in the building – only kitchen help. We will be providing a sanitization table for our customer’s use and we already are aware that the Activities Committee will be placing a portable toilet at the end of our parking lot for the public’s use.

Anyone who is willing to bake, please contact one of the Kitchen Team members and let us know. Anyone who is willing to help the day of the sale, please let us know. (You can use your new directory we included in the newsletter last month to get our phone numbers.) We are looking forward to our usual church fellowship and camaraderie.

Thank you

Altar Flowers The new supplier for our weekly altar flowers is Morning Glories at a cost of $45.00. We will continue using the sign-up sheet located on the bulletin board located in the breezeway, beside the kitchen door to indicate which week we wish to sponsor the altar flowers.

KUDOS: Special thanks to all those who helped with the annual freezing of the corn for our soup.

Presidential Facial Hair

With the 2020 Presidential Election fast approaching, we thought this article may be enjoyable – especially for the gentlemen of the congregation.

Undoubtedly, the most presidential type of facial hair is none at all; of the 44 dudes who have been president, a mere 12 had any kind of scruff.

It started with number 6 – John Quincy Adams. While a beard was considered improper at our country’s founding, the first son of a former president to run for office was somewhat rebellious – and considered a bit of a “dandy,” thus prone to extravagant style – so he proudly wore his mutton chops, explains historian Louis Picone, author of The President is Dead! Our eight president, Martin Van Buren – also considered a dandy – wore even more extravagant chops for his term.

It was Lincoln (16) who started the presidential facial hair trend, but he wouldn’t grow his iconic beard until after his election. Famously, he grew it because he received a letter from an 11- 5 year-old girl named, Grace Bedell, who told him he’d look better with some whiskers, as his face was so thin.

During the Civil War, men had little access to shaving equipment so many grew beards. Following the war, Picone says the full beard became the mark of heroism, which is why Ulysses S. GranT (18), Rutherford B. Hayes (19), James Garfield (20) and Benjamin Harrison (23) all had them. In that period, too, Picone says we had another dandy president in Chester A. Arthur (21), who had the most unique facial hair of a president – mutton chops connected to a mustache. Starting with Grover Cleveland (22 and 24), simply a mustache became the cool thing for a president as was the style for upper-class men. The solo stache would also be present on Teddy Roosevelt (26) and William Howard Taft (27), who was our last president with any facial hair.

After Taft, the famously proper Woodrow Wilson wouldn’t be caught dead with a bit of scruff. With the invention of the safety razor, plus the military ban on facial hair in WW1, White House whiskers became a thing of the past. This would continue into the present day with 20th century presidents seeking to contrast themselves from both hippies and many of America’s hirsute enemies overseas (Hitler, Stalin, Bin Laden, etc.).

There are other reasons, too: Some political psychologists have found that – subconsciously – people feel a bearded man looks older and more aggressive, which isn’t helpful in politics. Some even feel that concealing one’s face with a beard means that someone has something to hide, which – of course - is silly: After all, Honest Abe had one.

F A I T H

“Faith Always Instills Trusted Harmony “

F = Unquestioning belief in God

A = invariability

I = puts

T = firm belief in

H = agreement of peaceable or friendly relations

I’m finding out during this pandemic situation and the unrest of the world both through the environmental elements and the actions of evil people that it’s been harder to hold on to faith. Perhaps it’s because I’m scared, but that’s even more reason to rely on what I believe.

All Hallows' Eve,[7] or All ' Eve,[8] is a celebration observed in many countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day. It begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide,[9]the time in the dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), , and all the faithful departed.[10][11] It is widely believed that many Halloween traditions originated from ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival ; that such festivals may have had pagan roots; and that Samhain itself was Christianized as Halloween by the early Church.[12][13][14][15][16] Some believe, however, that Halloween began solely as a Christian holiday, separate from ancient festivals like Samhain.[17][18][19][20]
