Rouhani's Protest Paradox | the Washington Institute
MENU Policy Analysis / PolicyWatch 2911 Rouhani's Protest Paradox by Omer Carmi Jan 8, 2018 Also available in Arabic ABOUT THE AUTHORS Omer Carmi Omer Carmi was a 2017 military fellow at The Washington Institute. Brief Analysis If the protests intensify, President Rouhani may be hard pressed to unravel his greatest dilemma: how to honor his economic and reform promises while preserving his decades-long commitment to the regime's core principles. uring his 2017 reelection campaign, Hassan Rouhani portrayed himself as Iran's best hope for economic D recovery, sporting slogans such as "Freedom, Security, Peace, and Progress" while promising to promote "justice and reforms." Rouhani even attacked the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), claiming that improvements could only be achieved if "groups with security and political backing" refrained from interfering in the economy. Yet President Rouhani's actions since then suggest that he is not keeping his campaign promises. Over the past few months, he has softened his tone on the IRGC, failed to appoint female ministers to his cabinet, and selected controversial figure Mansour Gholami, a former university president who has relations with the conservative camp, as minister of science—a post highly valued by reformists because it supervises the country's universities. As a result, Rouhani has suffered harsh criticism from prominent reformist figures for "shifting to the right" of the political map. The current demonstrations therefore represent an acute challenge for Rouhani. Some of the protestors have chanted slogans directly against him, even calling for his death. More generally, they have centered their demonstrations around corruption and poverty—two issues that Rouhani promised to alleviate during his campaign. -

SPEECH BY YB DATO’ SRI ROHANI ABDUL KARIM MINISTER OF WOMEN, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN CONJUNCTION WITH CHINESE WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS FOUNDATION (MCWEF) DINNER & PRESS CONFERENCE RITZ-CARLTON, KUALA LUMPUR 28th OCTOBER 2016 (FRIDAY) 0 SALUTATION Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakaatuh Salam Sejahtera dan Salam 1Malaysia. INTRODUCTION Ladies and Gentlemen, 1. It is indeed a great pleasure for me to be with all of you in this significant event. As we all know, Malaysian Chinese Women Entrepreneurs Foundation is a non-profit and non-governmental organization established on 6 July 2011. The Foundation was officially launched at the Klang Hokkien Association by our Honourable Prime Minister YAB Dato’Sri Najib Razak, and it is now into its 5th year. 2. The Founder, Tan Sri SP Lim once told me that many women, especially single mothers, want to start-up small businesses that can help the family with extra income and at the same time allowing them to spend time and take care of their children. But many of them live in remote villages, with limited education and no access to business opportunities and network. They have no collateral to raise the start-up 1 capital. They yearn for city life, and they want to run their own businesses. Their maternal instinct gives them a strong sense of responsibility with the hope to create a more comfortable living environment for their children. 3. Tan Sri SP Lim has relentlessly persuaded the Ministry of Finance and the Prime Minister’s Department to provide a grant from which loans can be given to these category of women. -

The Extreme Right in Contemporary Romania
INTERNATIONAL POLICY ANALYSIS The Extreme Right in Contemporary Romania RADU CINPOEª October 2012 n In contrast to the recent past of the country, there is a low presence of extreme right groups in the electoral competition of today’s Romania. A visible surge in the politi- cal success of such parties in the upcoming parliamentary elections of December 2012 seems to be unlikely. This signals a difference from the current trend in other European countries, but there is still potential for the growth of extremism in Roma- nia aligning it with the general direction in Europe. n Racist, discriminatory and intolerant attitudes are present within society. Casual intol- erance is widespread and racist or discriminatory statements often go unpunished. In the absence of a desire by politicians to lead by example, it is left to civil society organisations to pursue an educative agenda without much state-driven support. n Several prominent members of extreme right parties found refuge in other political forces in the last years. These cases of party migration make it hard to believe that the extreme views held by some of these ex-leaders of right-wing extremism have not found support in the political parties where they currently operate. The fact that some of these individuals manage to rally electoral support may in fact suggest that this happens precisely because of their original views and attitudes, rather than in spite of them.
