The History of Anthropological Theory THE HISTORY OF ANTHROPOLOGICAL THEORY ANTHROPOLOGY 441 Bates College Loring M. Danforth Fall 2007 Pettengill 163 786-6081 Course Description This course on the history of anthropological theory could also be considered a course on the anthropology of anthropological theory. It is both a course on the intellectual history of anthropology as a discipline and a course in which we subject the discipline of anthropology to the kind of analysis and interpretation anthropologists usually engage in while studying other cultures in other parts of the world. Instead of analyzing myths and rituals from other cultures, in this course we analyze the texts anthropologists themselves write to see what we can learn from them about the different perspectives anthropologists and members of Western European cultures more generally have adopted in their study of what have been variously referred to as "savage," "primitive," "tribal," "kinship-based," "non-literate," and "Third World" societies. Instead of asking what the work of Margaret Mead or Evans-Pritchard, for example, can tell us about the Samoans or the Nuer, we ask what it can tell us about American or British anthropology. By adopting a self- reflexive or critical stance we set the discipline of anthropology in its historical and cultural context. In that way we can better understand the different theoretical approaches that have dominated anthropology over the past century. Among the important approaches and topics we consider are: cultural evolutionism, historical particularism, British structural-functionalism, psychological anthropology, recent developments in the areas of ethnographic writing, anthropology as cultural critique, postmodernism, feminism, and globalization theory. For every class students will prepare three questions or topics for discussion raised by the readings. The questions should be typed and will be handed in after class. 3. Thesis prospectus and critiques of other students' prospectuses. 4. Two short papers (5 pages) analyzing the assigned readings. The first paper should deal with the work of Boas, Radcliffe-Brown, or Benedict; the second with the work of Said, Geertz, Clifford, Marcus and Cushman, Behar (Gordon, Lutz), or Appadurai. 5. One long paper (10-15 pages) on a topic of your choice. 6. Take-home final exam. Grading Grades will be calculated as follows: Final Exam 25% Long paper 25% Two short papers 25% Class participation, written questions, thesis perspectus, exercises and peer response forms 25% 5 Schedule of Due Dates Short papers are due at the beginning of class on the day the material analyzed is scheduled to be discussed. Oct. 2 Senior Thesis Prospectus Nov. 29 Long Paper Dec. 11 Take-home final examination (to be handed out on Dec. 6) (Late papers and exams will be graded down unless an extension has been granted.) Papers The long paper should be approximately 10-15 pages long. It should focus on one anthropological school, the work of one anthropologist, an important work of one anthropologist, or one concept that has been central to the history of anthropology. You are encouraged to choose a school, an anthropologist, a work, or a concept that we have not dealt with in class, such as French Structuralism (Durkheim or Levi Strauss), cultural ecology (Steward or Harris), interpretive anthropology (Geertz, Turner, or Douglas), medical anthropology (Kleinman), race (Montague), or post-processual archaeology (Hodder). You should deal with your topic as we deal with the class readings. Treat the text as a document from another culture. Ask what we can learn from the text about the culture of the anthropologist who wrote the text. Do not focus on the ethnographic content of the work. In other words, if you were to write about Margaret Mead's Coming of Age in Samoa, you would not be concerned with Samoan culture, but with American cultural anthropology or with psychological anthropology as practiced by Mead. You should examine the perspective or the paradigm of the anthropologist you write about. What, for example, does Mead take for granted? What are her assumptions? What are her questions? What are her methods? What for Mead constitutes an explanation? The short papers should be approximately 5 pages long. They should focus on one idea, concept, term, or issue from the readings. They should deal with some of the same topics as the long paper, but in a much more restricted and focused manner. Make sure you do not jut summarize the reading, but make a point, say something interesting, or offer an interpretation or analysis of some specific aspect of the readings. For example, you might analyze Tylor’s concept of culture or progress or Boas’ use of the term culture or his thoughts about anthropology as a science. All students are responsible for reading and understanding the Bates College Statement on Academic Honesty. .

When we are trying to understand human complex cognition, it is as well important to look back to entire evolution. I will present the thesis that our biological predispositions and culture, together with natural and social environment, are tightly connected. During ontogenetically development we are shaped by various factors, and they enabled humans to develop some aspects of complex cognition, such as mathematics. In the beginning of the article I present the importance of natural and cultural evolution in other animals. In the following part, I briefly examine the field of mathematics – numerosity and arithmetic. Presentation of comparative animal studies, mainly made on primates, provides some interesting examples in animals’ abilities to separate between different quantities. From abilities for numerosity in animals I continue to neuroscientific studies of humans and our ability to solve simple arithmetic tasks. I also mention cross-cultural studies of arithmetic skills. In the final part of the text I present the field neuroanthropology as a possible new pillar of cognitive science. Finally, it is important to connect human evolution and development with animal cognition studies, but as well with cross-cultural studies in shaping of human ability for numerosity and arithmetic. "Race" is not a black or white issue in. anthropology, certainly not for the last sixty years. Most anthropologists deny the existence of "biological races," but they all acknowledge the reality of "social races," and the tendency for people to deal with one another in terms of socially and culturally constructed racial categories. Forensic anthropologists, for example, measure bones to identify the race of unidentified skeletons, but their racial attributions are statistical inferences drawn from comparative skeletons of known social races. Such classifications vary across time and space, so American forensic anthropologists are best at identifying the social races recognized in America. And since social races are as often distinguished on the basis of their cultural as physical features, anthropologist Ashley Montagu (1942) has long insisted that races should properly be called "ethnic groups." The racial categories used by the federal Census Bureau are examples of "social races." While often based upon perceived physical differences, such perceptions have changed over time.

Abstract Over the past 150 years numerous labels have been applied to the “parts” of culture. Some of these, including “themes,” “configurations,” “complexes,” and “patterns” are macro level. Micro level terms include “ideas,” “beliefs,” “values,” “rules,” “principles,” “symbols,” “concepts,” and a few others. The macro level labels often appear to be particular arrangements of micro level units. But which of these, if any, is the (or, an) operational unit of cultural transmission, diffusion, and evolution? Recently proposed units of cultural transmission typically derive from analogies made between cultural and biological evolution. Even though the unit of selection in biological evolution (i.e., the gene, the individual, or the group) is still under debate, the “meme,” originally suggested by Dawkins (1976) as a cultural analog of the gene, has been “selected” by many as a viable unit of culture. A “science of memes” (“memetics”) has been proposed (Lynch 1996) and numerous web sites devoted to the meme exist on the internet. This paper will trace the development of the meme and, in the process, critically address its utility as a unit of culture. 2 The whole history of science shows that advance depends upon going beyond “common sense” to abstractions that reveal unobvious relations and common properties of isolatable aspects of phenomena.

    Sociocultural evolution 1 Sociocultural evolution Sociocultural evolution(ism) is an umbrella term for theories of cultural evolution and social evolution, describing how cultures and societies have changed over time. Note that "sociocultural evolution" is not an equivalent of "sociocultural development" (unified processes of differentiation and integration involving increases in sociocultural complexity), as sociocultural evolution also encompasses sociocultural transformations accompanied by decreases of complexity (degeneration) as well as ones not accompanied by any significant changes of sociocultural complexity (cladogenesis).[1] Thus, sociocultural evolution can be defined as "the process by which structural reorganization is affected through time, eventually producing a form or structure which is qualitatively different from the ancestral form.... Evolutionism then becomes the scientific activity of finding nomothetic explanations for the occurrence of such structural changes".[2] Although such theories typically provide models for understanding the relationship between technologies, social structure, the values of a society, and how and why they change with time, they vary as to the extent to which they describe specific mechanisms of variation and social change. Historically, Europeans had tried to explain the meaning of "primitive" societies, with some arguing that primitive peoples had degenerated from a "barbarous" to an even lower "savage" state. These observers often saw European society as symbolizing the highest state of "civilization."[3] Over time, important commentators like Edward Burnett Tylor, Lewis Henry Morgan, Franz Boas, Leslie White, and Julian Steward elaborated on this thinking with theories from unilinear evolution to the "culture history" approach.[3] Sociocultural modeling[4] is an umbrella term for theories of cultural and social evolution, which aims to describe how cultures and societies have developed over time.

Smith1, Liane Gabora2, and William Gardner-O’Kearny1 1Department of Anthropology, Portland State University 2Department of Psychology, University of British Columbia Abstract The Extended Evolutionary Synthesis (EES) is beginning to fulfill the whole promise of Darwinian insight through its extension of evolutionary understanding from the biological domain to include cultural information evolution. Several decades of important foundation-laying work took a social Darwinist approach and exhibited ecologically-deterministic elements. This is not the case for more recent developments to the evolutionary study of culture, which emphasize non-Darwinian processes such as self-organization, potentiality, and epigenetic change. Introduction In recent years, Nature editors declared evolution a fact (2008), and a 2010 Proceedings of the Royal Society [B] symposium titled Culture Evolves extended the evolutionary process to the phenomenon of culture, a socially-transmitted body of information. The adoption of evolutionary approaches to culture has in part been spurred by the recognition that the currently-developing Extended Evolutionary Synthesis (Danchin et al. 2011; Koonin 2009; Love 2010; Pigliucci and Muller 2010) provides a more textured appreciation for the multiple modes of evolution, including cultural evolution (Smith and Ruppell 2011).
