Conocer las propuestas teóricas y metodológicas que singularizan la perspectiva de Boas, y su escuela de pensamiento. Conocer derivaciones posteriores tales como la escuela de cultura y personalidad, así como sus alcances y limitaciones. Manejar la polémica, la reacción, y las nuevas perspectivas de la ecología cultural y el neo- evolucionismo. Analizar textos científicos e identificar sus tesis y preguntas centrales, su estrategia de argumentación y el manejo de fuentes por parte de los autores, así mismo, que sean capaces de manejar las habilidades básicas de expresión oral y escrita del español al exponer en el aula los resultados de sus indagaciones. The moving and poignant story of Ishi, the last Yahi Indian, has manifested itself in the film drama The Last of His Tribe (HBO Pictures/Sundance Institute, 1992). Given the long history of Hollywood's misrepresentation of Native Americans, I propose to examine this cinematic drama attending historical, ideological and cultural axioms acknowledged in the film and concomitant literature. Particular attention is given to dramatic allegorical themes manifesting historical racism, Western societal conquest, and most profoundly anthropological indifference, as well as, the historical accuracy and the ideological differences of worldview -- Western vis-à-vis Yahi -- manifest in the film. In the study of worldviews and concomitant values, there has long existed a lurking "we" - "they" proposition of otherness. Ever since the days of Plato and his Western intellectual predecessors, there has been an attempt to locate and explicate wisdom in the ethnocentric ideological notion of the "civilized" vis-à-vis the "savage." Consequently, Plato's thoughts are accorded the standing of philosophy -- the love of wisdom -- while Black Elk's words are the musings of the "primitive" and consigned to anthropology -- the science of man. Philosophy is, thusly, seen as an endeavor of "civilized" Western man whom in his "science of man" or anthropological investigation may record the "ethnometaphysics" of "primitive" or "developing" cultures. -

Regular article Accepted: 21 October 2013. ABSTRACT Humankind has a long evolutionary history. When we are trying to understand human complex cognition, it is as well important to look back to entire evolution. I will present the thesis that our biological predispositions and culture, together with natural and social environment, are tightly connected. During ontogenetically development we are shaped by various factors, and they enabled humans to develop some aspects of complex cognition, such as mathematics. In the beginning of the article I present the importance of natural and cultural evolution in other animals. In the following part, I briefly examine the field of mathematics – numerosity and arithmetic. Presentation of comparative animal studies, mainly made on primates, provides some interesting examples in animals’ abilities to separate between different quantities. From abilities for numerosity in animals I continue to neuroscientific studies of humans and our ability to solve simple arithmetic tasks. I also mention cross-cultural studies of arithmetic skills. In the final part of the text I present the field neuroanthropology as a possible new pillar of cognitive science. Finally, it is important to connect human evolution and development with animal cognition studies, but as well with cross-cultural studies in shaping of human ability for numerosity and arithmetic. It draws from approaches in anthropology and the medical humanities to understand the body- environment-medicine interface in a cross-cultural perspective. How do social processes determine disease and health in individuals and collectivities? How does culture surface in the seeking of treatment and the provision of medical care? What role do medical technologies and public interventions play in health outcomes? Which values inform medical theory and practice, and how might the humanities deepen our understanding of the realities of disease and care? In the first half of the course, we will discuss topics such as: the relation of illness, subjectivity, and social experience; the logic of witchcraft; the healing efficacy of symbols and rituals; the art of caregiving and moral sensibility. We will also probe the reach and relevance of concepts such as the normal and the pathological, body techniques, discipline and normalization, medicalization, the nocebo and placebo effects, the mindful body, and the body politic. Except for a few minor verbal alterations they are printed as they were delivered. I thought it unwise to change, or add to, what was written to be spoken within the limits imposed by the medium of expression and for a particular purpose and audience. Social anthropology is still little more than a name to most people, and I hoped that broadcast talks on the subject would make its scope and methods better known. I trust that their publication as a book will serve the same purpose. As there are few brief introductory guides to social anthropology I believe that this book may also be of use to students in anthropological departments in British and American universities. I have therefore added a short bibliography. I have expressed many of the ideas in these lectures before, and sometimes in the same language. Scholars and Controversy: a Note on Elizabeth Colson's Work Against Sex Discrimination in Academia
SCHOLARS AND CONTROVERSY: A NOTE ON ELIZABETH COLSON'S WORK AGAINST SEX DISCRIMINATION IN ACADEMIA June Starr INTRODUCTION There is widespread consensus that the standards set by Elizabeth Colson's books on two different groups, the Makah Indians of North America (1953) and the Plateau Tonga of the Gwembe Valley (1958, 1960, 1962, 1971), place her among the most distinguished anthropolo- gists. Her research and writing span three continents (North America, Africa, and Australia). She has written persuasively on such topics as marriage, divorce, kinship, quantitative methods, the long-term study of a single community, politics, law, development, disruption, and change. Some of her writing bridges the often separate fields of theoretical and applied anthropology. Unheralded in anthropological circles is another aspect of Elizabeth Colson's work-her championship of the rights of academic women. In 1969, she co-chaired an Academic Senate subcommittee which a year later produced a report on the status of women on the Berkeley campus of the University of California. Thus, a tribute to Elizabeth Colson as researcher, scho- lar, and teacher might well include mention of her work on behalf of academic women. In 1970, sex discrimination on university campuses was a hidden and almost taboo topic. How- ever, the scholarly and courageous report by Colson, Scott, Blumer, Ervin-Tripp, and Newman did much to publicize it. In an era when few distinguished academics were willing to sacrifice time and energy for the public good, Elizabeth Colson gave a year of her time to clarify the record concerning women academics at Berkeley. The report that she and her colleagues com- piled set standards for similar data collection and reporting on university campuses across North America in the 1970s. -
Culture and Personality Studies
Culture and Culture and Personality studies: Introduction ‘Culture and personality’ is the earliest name of the school or thoughts of school. It is important study in psychological anthropology, thus culture and personality studies, also called psychological anthropology. Its beginnings are associated especially with the great American linguist and anthropologist Edward Sapir (1884—1939). Sapir was influenced by German Gestalt psychologists, who had argued that perception could be understood only when the thing perceived was viewed not as an assemblage of separate elements, but as an organized pattern (Gestalt). So when one looks, for example, at a landscape painting, one sees it not as flat planes of colour laid against one another, but as a whole — ‘a landscape’. This example shows us too why a whole may be more than the sum of its parts and have its own essential properties. In this Gestalt view, meaning was a function of organized patterns, and Sapir applied this idea to his analyses of language and of culture and personality. Sapir was suspicious of the contemporary concept of culture, which he described as ‘tidy tables of contents’ attached to particular groups of people. In an influential 1934 essay he argued that ‘the more fully one tries to understand a culture, the more it seems to take on the characteristics of a personality organization’ (1985 [1949]: 594). The study of the development of personality was Sapir’s solution to the problems posed by the way that, in anthropological accounts, culture ‘can be made to assume the appearance of a closed system of behaviour’ (p. 594). -

ANTHROPOLOGY AND THE SCIENCE OF "RACE" Brian Siegel The fixity of a habit is generally in direct proportion to its absurdity (Marcel Proust, Remembrance of Things Past). "Race" is not a black or white issue in. anthropology, certainly not for the last sixty years. Most anthropologists deny the existence of "biological races," but they all acknowledge the reality of "social races," and the tendency for people to deal with one another in terms of socially and culturally constructed racial categories. Forensic anthropologists, for example, measure bones to identify the race of unidentified skeletons, but their racial attributions are statistical inferences drawn from comparative skeletons of known social races. Such classifications vary across time and space, so American forensic anthropologists are best at identifying the social races recognized in America. And since social races are as often distinguished on the basis of their cultural as physical features, anthropologist Ashley Montagu (1942) has long insisted that races should properly be called "ethnic groups." The racial categories used by the federal Census Bureau are examples of "social races." While often based upon perceived physical differences, such perceptions have changed over time. -

Boğaziçi University Fall 2018 ATA 584: Selected Topics in Social Theory and History / Religion and Society Instructor: Dr. Kutluğhan Soyubol – [email protected] Course Description: This is an interdisciplinary course designed to introduce recent debates and scholarship on the sociology, anthropology as well as history of religion to advanced undergraduate and graduate students. During the course, we will dwell on specific themes of sociology, anthropology, and philosophy of religion, including but not limited to, the discussions of tradition, piety, atheism, secularism, modernity, and elaborate on the dynamic relationships between religion, science, nationalism, sexuality, and the arts. We will further delve into the debates within religious studies, focus on hermeneutical approaches to faith and theology, and engage with current trends in the anthropology of religion, such as its attempts to analytically engage with pious discipline and self-cultivation. Finally, we will reflect on the Turkish experience and discuss the predicaments of the Turkish republican case. Course Requirements: 1) Participation: Weekly presentations, attendance, and class participation: 20% Students must read the required materials in advance of class meetings. Every week a small group of students will be assigned to present one of the required readings assigned for the class. The presentations should be approximately fifteen minutes and address the following questions: What are the author’s main arguments? What is the theoretical framework that these arguments are built on? And the evidence used to support it? 2) Midterm Exam: 40% (Open-book) 3) Final Exam: 40% (Open-book) Schedule: This schedule is tentative and subject to change.
