This year, following Krakow (1992) and Budapest (2004), the EAERE Annual Conference is returning to Central Euro- pe. To date, the EAERE conferences have been rarely attended by researchers from Central and Eastern European countries and with the hope of changing this unsatisfactory fact, we have decided to bring this prestigious scien- tific event to Prague. Let´s hope that we have succeeded in raising the awareness of EAERE conferences in our region and that the effects will be felt in the coming years. There has been a continuously growing interest in attending EAERE annual conferences so as to benefit from the ex- cellent research presented there, to be part of a remarkable community and to enjoy an important scientific event. To our great pleasure, the EAERE 2012 Conference is no exception and is also receiving a strong response. Almost 1,200 papers have been submitted from all over the world. These were reviewed by two independent reviewers, to whom I am very grateful for their professional and responsible work. As a result, the conference programme lists around 480 papers to be presented in about 120 parallel sessions and within several guided poster tours. Highly distinguished and internationally known scholars will deliver keynote lectures or will be participating in panel dis- cussions and policy sessions. There are several specific features of the EAERE 2012 Conference that I´d like to bring to your attention. Firstly, we have 13 Special Sessions included in the scientific programme devoted to certain hot topics or specific methods relevant for environmental and resource economics. These 13 were selected from 46 submissions – all excellent with respect to quality and their focus – sent by many of you last autumn. We have introduced several tools to improve the visibility of the Poster Session, which has not yet gained the recognition it enjoys in the natural sci- ences. We are also paying special attention to make our Conference sufficiently policy relevant. Specifically, we have placed in the programme several thematic policy sessions and a roundtable reflecting the UN Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20. To allow more of you to present and discuss your work and to ensure that everyone feels comfortable, we are following a ‘one-person-one-paper’ rule, as introduced for the first time in the Rome Conference. To avoid having an over-packed programme, following Council´s recommendation, we have kept the limit of total papers accepted below 500. Black-and-yellow is the colour of our conference; you can notice this when looking, for example, at our badges or at Your Programme Book. However, we have also tried to maximise the colour green within our conference. We have devoted considerable attention to preparing a balanced and well-structured scientific programme but ha- ven’t forgotten about the social aspect of the Conference. It is always a challenge to compete with great social events being organised at the annual EAERE conferences. We have done our best and arranged our social events in outstanding places reflecting Czech history and the diversity of architectural styles that Prague offers. We have -ca refully considered the necessity of having a ‘gala’ dinner and left the decision this year whether to join the seated dinner to you. You can also enjoy an outstanding music ensemble during our social event; there is no need to add more if I say that it is my pleasure to announce the next concert by the famous and well-known Dr Keynes and the Lounge Lizards at the EAERE 2012. You may enjoy wine tasting during the welcome reception and drinking great Moravian wines or Czech beers during all our social events. There is much more to see than the buildings in which the scientific and social part of our conference will take place. I hope you will have some time for sightseeing and to be fascinated by the genius loci of Prague, as I was when as an 18-year old I moved to Prague in order to study. Indeed, Prague serves up a unique collection of historical monuments, dominated by Prague Castle which towers high above the city. Prague is also a showcase for many artistic and architectural styles and movements; its centre is characterised by winding alleys and buildings of all architectural styles - Romanesque rotundas, Gothic cathedrals, Baroque and Renaissance palaces, Art Nouveau, Classicist, Cubist and Functionalist houses – whatever style you might think of. I hope you have enough time to enjoy Prague. We expect to have many interesting events organised during the four summer days in Prague. For this reason we would appreciate it if you would take a minute to look through this programme to check location, timing and other useful instructions, both here and on the updates that will be available at the conference area. In case you have any other requests or you notice things that are not working, please do not hesitate to immediately contact us in the conference secretariat. We are ready and waiting to help you and will do our very best to fix things. All the information you might need can also be found at our Conference website: http://www.eaere2012.org. Without doubt the EAERE 2012 Conference would not have been possible to arrange without the enormous help of my colleagues from Charles University Environment Center and the whole organising team, to whom I am limitle- ssly grateful for their consistently professional efforts. There are many to whom I would like to give my thanks; most of them are listed in this book. Here I would like to particularly name a few of them - Hana Škopková who has put all her energy into taking responsibility for just about everything, Vojtěch Máca who has helped to patiently solve, with great wisdom, many unexpected problems; Jan Melichar who helped greatly, not only with the scientific programme, Bengt Kriström, the third Programme Committee co-chair who has been always on hand to provide his knowledgeable help and Martin Kryl who took care of the programming of the registration process and our websi- te. Many thanks are also due to the EAERE secretariat, Monica Eberle and Irene Bellin, for providing us with great knowledge and continuous advice. I would also like to thank our donors, sponsors and partners who are listed at the end of this book. Dear Colleagues, let me on behalf of the EAERE 2012 Local Organising Committee and Scientific Programme Commi- ttee wish you all a wonderful welcome to Prague and I hope you will enjoy the days spent with us. Milan Ščasný Charles University in Prague, Environment Center SECTION GENERAL INFORMATION Conference Venues The conference is being held on the campus of the University of Economics located in Žižkov - a city quarter situated just a few minutes by tram or metro from the city centre, close to the range of cultural attractions that Prague offers. The campus is well served by public transport. The main train station, Hlavní nádraží which also has a metro stop on subway line C of the same name is just within walking distance, or you can get there on tram number 5, 9 or 26 and get off at Husinecká stop.
