However, with COVID-19 now in almost all parts of the world, we have to approach sports very differently where we expect athletes, spectators, organisers and support crew working close to each other. The 2021 Safari Rally WRC is no different. Thankfully, the FIA has released clear and concise guidelines on how to do this in Appendix S of the International Sporting Code, COVID-19 Code of Conduct. No one is immune from these rules and certain groups, such as Media, are expected to be ambassadors in pushing through the message to the competitors and public. You will see and experience new measures in place that you may not be used to such as the creation of the High-Density Area (HDA) where only those essential to the safe running for the event are allowed, mandatory PCR and antigen tests for entry into the HDA, lack of mingling of at the event even between groups at HDA. There will be limited access for all personnel in this area including for Media and once in HDA, one will not be allowed to freely come in and out at will. In fact, there is even guidelines on how to behave at your hotel every evening and who with. We need everyone on board making this event a success and bringing back the glory of the Safari Rally. I have driven in three Safari Rally when it was part of the WRC and I am there with you wanting it back and keeping it in Kenya. Go to where the action is in the stages and be the ones sending the messages to the world that we are safe. See you all soon. Stay safe, wear a mask and keep your social distance. In 1960 it was renamed the East African Safari Rally and kept that name until 1974, when it became the Kenya Safari Rally. Widely regarded as one of the most popular African rallies, it's set to make a return to the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 2021 after a 19-year hiatus. The older version of the Safari Rally was notorious for being the most difficult rally in the World championship. Some had said that winning this particular rally was the equivalent of winning three other rallies. The arduous conditions, such as the constantly changing weather and the very rough roads often made life very difficult for team personnel. Repairs were constantly having to be made to the cars, which added to the elapsed time of the competitors. Frequently, all this work had to be done in intense heat and humidity. The event adopted the special stage format in 1996. From that edition until 2002, it featured over 1000 km of timed stages, with stages well over 60 kilometers long, unlike most rallies which had under 500 kilometers of total timed distance. The event exited from the WRC calendar in 2003. Since 2003 the event has been part of the FIA African Rally Championship, organised by the Kenyan ASN. On the 27 September 2019, The Safari Rally was readmitted into the WRC championship calendar starting with the 2020 rally between 16 and 19 July. This unfortunately was not to be with the COVID 19 Pandemic which affected many events across the world. The 2021 event will take place between 23-27 June, 2021 THE OFFICIAL SPECTATOR GUIDE 2021 WRC SAFARI RALLY 7 23rd to 27th June 2021 PAST WINNERS Past Winners Year Rally Name / Dates Winning Driver Co-driver Winning Car Status 1953 1st Coronation Safari Rally Volkswagen Beetle Alan Dix Johnny Larsen 1954 2nd Coronation Safari Rally Volkswagen Beetle D P Marwaha Vic Preston Sr 1955 3rd Coronation Safari Rally Ford Zephyr Vic Preston Sr D P Marwaha 1956 4th Coronation Safari Rally DKW Eric Cecil Tony Vickers 1957 5th Coronation Safari Rally Gus Hofmann Arthur Burton Volkswagen Beetle 1958 6th Coronation Safari Rally T. • 1968 − 1984 Colin: the Busy Baby by Margaret Mcrae
1968 − 1984 Colin: the busy baby by Margaret McRae Colin Steele McRae was born on August 5, 1968. It was a Monday. He was born in the William Smellie Maternity Hospital in Lanark. And he was a much-wanted child – a first grandchild for my parents, however Jim’s mum and dad already had two. It’s from Jim’s mum that Colin took the name Steele – it was her maiden name. We were living in Blackwood, about five miles from Lanark, in those days. And it was to the house in Vere Road, Blackwood that we would have taken Colin home – if we hadn’t still been renovating the cottage at the time. Instead, we went and stayed with my parents for two or three weeks while we finished the work on the house. This was actually quite a God-send as my dad wasn’t feeling too well at the time and having a newborn baby in the house really took his mind off things. He spent all of his time, just focused on the baby. Right from the off, Colin was a busy baby and, unfortunately for us, not a baby to whom sleep came easily or quickly. I think he stayed in our room for about seven weeks, before we knew the time had come for him to go into his own room. I don’t think Colin really slept through the night completely for about two years. Alister, his younger brother, was something of a revelation by comparison and slept really quickly. It’s fair to say, Colin wasn’t an easy baby.

  • The Citroën Junior Team Aims Higher
Rally Finland (30 July - 2 August 2009) – Preview The Citroën Junior Team aims higher After a month-long summer break, the FIA World Rally Championship heads to Finland for the ninth round of the series from 30 July to 2 August. The Citroën Junior Team will be running three C4 WRCs: for Sébastien Ogier / Julien Ingrassia, Evgeny Novikov / Dale Moscatt and Conrad Rautenbach / Daniel Barritt. By improving both its performance and reliability throughout the second third of the season, the Citroën Junior Team has gone from strength to strength since April. In Argentina, Italy, Greece and Poland, the Citroën Junior Team always managed to place at least one of its C4 WRCs in the points, thanks to Sébastien Ogier, Conrad Rautenbach and Evgeny Novikov. Some fastest times from Ogier and Novikov on the world’s toughest stages have also underlined the growing potential of the Citroën Junior Team. One month after a promising performance in Poland, the Citroën Junior Team now faces a real icon in the world of rallying. Finland is well known as the spiritual home of rallying, producing six World Champions that have claimed 13 of the 30 world titles allocated since 1979. The event’s rapid stages and rollercoaster crests make it an unforgettable experience for everyone who goes there. Sébastien Ogier / Julien Ingrassia and Evgeny Novikov / Dale Moscatt have been nominated to score manufacturer points for the Citroen Junior Team. Conrad Rautenbach / Daniel Barritt are entered in a third Citroën C4 WRC. In order to prepare for the quickest rally of the season, the three crews will undertake a three-day test on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to set-up their Citroën C4 WRCs and get to grips with the unique conditions of Finland.

Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) were crowned World Rally Champions for the fourth time in a row after taking victory at the Rally Spain. They guided their Volkswagen Polo R WRC to a fifth win of the season in Catalonia, finishing ahead of Dani Sordo/Marc Martí (E/E, Hyundai) und Thierry Neuville/Nicolas Gilsoul (B/B, Hyundai). Their ninth podium in eleven races triggered wild celebrations. The Frenchmen can no longer be caught at the top of the overall standings in the 2016 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). Team-mates Andreas Mikkelsen/Anders Jæger (N/N) went into the Rally Spain as their closest rivals in the title race, but the Norwegians’ hopes of winning the championship were dashed when they were forced to retire from the rally. Eighth place in the Manufacturers’ classifications for Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) means Volkswagen is well- placed to claim its fourth Manufacturers’ title in a row next time out at the Rally Great Britain. Kankkunen, Mäkinen and Ogier – up there with the biggest names in rallying 952 days in a row at the top of the table: Sébastien Ogier is only the third World Rally Champion to be crowned champion four years in a row in the pinnacle of rallying, and the fourth four-time world champion in the history of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC).

Before I underline the team’s hopes and expectations for this event, I wish to acknowledge all the hard work that’s gone into putting on this rally in such a short amount of time. The efforts of AKK Sports and all the volunteers, particularly in the context of COVID-19, has really impressed me so a big thank you to them. It’s fair to say we showed our limits on Rallye Monte-Carlo and found ourselves licking our wounds and trying to get ahead. Unfortunately, it didn’t work there and after making some changes to our approach we start the second round of the season hoping it will be much better than the first. Having wished a fond farewell to Carlos del Barrio after Monte as he prepared for the next chapter of his career, we are pleased to welcome back Craig and Paul for the start of their half-season campaign in a Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. We know very well their ability and determination as they try to make a strong start to their season. As well as our regular World Rally Car drivers, we are giving a big chance to a really promising youngster, Oliver Solberg.

  • Mission Accomplished for Sordo and Marti
Acropolis Rally of Greece (11-14 June, 2009) – Day 3 Mission accomplished for Sordo and Marti After restarting under the SupeRally ruling for the third and final day of the 2009 Acropolis Rally of Greece, Dani Sordo and Marc Marti achieved their aims by scoring four points for Citroën in the Manufacturers’ world championship. Day 3 of the Acropolis Rally was held near the service park in Loutraki. The day began with a loop comprising three stages, including a run through Aghii Theodori, a daunting 33 km stage. After restarting in 17th position in the overall standings, the only goal for Dani Sordo and Marc Marti was to finish in order to score a handful of points for Citroën in the Manufacturers’ championship. Arriving in Loutraki for the midday service, Dani Sordo was fully focused on the job in hand: “It’s never easy to run at a controlled pace but I’m taking no risks. I’m staying in the middle of the road – at times, it feels like we’re doing a recce!” Following the cancellation of a stage, the rally concluded with a second run through Aghii Theodori. Running at the same pace, Dani finished in 12 th position, which is worth four points in the Manufacturers’ standings. “Dani and Marc did a perfect job,” concluded Citroën Total World Rally Team team manager Sven Smeets. “These points are even more important because our rivals once again took a maximum score. We’re already looking ahead to the next rally. We’ll be going to Rally Poland even hungrier for a win!” RALLY FACTS Dani Sordo / Marc Marti Stage Overall SS13 : Loutraki 1 (8,98 km) 3rd +1’’5 16 th +19’33’’0 SS14 : Aghii Theodori (33,00 km) 5th +10’’0 14 th +19’21’’1 SS15 : New Pissia (11,30 km) 2nd +0’’2 14 th +19’10’’7 SS16 : Loutraki 2 (8,98 km) SS CANCELLED SS17 : Aghii Theodori (33,00 km) 2nd +5’’3 12 th +18’41’’0 Stage wins Day 1 – SS1 : Jari-Matti Latvala (Ford Focus) – SS2 : Dani Sordo (Citroën C4) – SS3 : annulée – SS4 : Evgeny Novikov (Citroën C4) – SS5 : Sébastien Ogier (Citroën C4) – SS6 : Mikko Hirvonen (Ford Focus).
