Paperback. Book Condition: New. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. 244 pages. Dimensions: 10.0in. x 7.0in. x 0.6in.Three Men in a Boat, published in 1889, is a humorous account by Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford. The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction to the comic novel. One of the most praised things about Three Men in a Boat is how undated it appears to modern readers the jokes seem fresh and witty even today. The three men are based on Jerome himself (the narrator J. ) and two real-life friends, George Wingrave (who went on to become a senior manager in Barclays Bank) and Carl Hentschel (the founder of a London printing business, called Harris in the book), with whom he oen took boating trips. The dog, Montmorency, is entirely fictional but, as Jerome admits, developed out of that area of inner consciousness which, in all Englishmen, contains an element of the dog. The trip is a typical boating holiday of the time in a Thames camping ski. This was just aer commercial boat traic on the Upper Thames had died out, replaced by the 1880s craze for boating as a leisure activity. As with Three Men in a Boat, Three Men on the Bummel seems thoroughly modern in tone and style of humor. Jerome K. Jerome is particularly fond of comical exaggeration of the sort that would seem totally natural on a television sitcom today. Aer a mistake involving somebody elses bicycle, and a run-in with the authorities, he summarizes My going scot free... English Humor At Its Best!By Judy MurphyStrictly by chance, I happened on Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men In A Boat. Having spent almost five years in England when I was a teenager, I love to read about the country and it's people. Three Men In A Boat is a very funny book. When I found Three Men on the Bummel, I was as delighted with it as I was with the "Boat" book. When I first went to England, at age sixteen, I wasn't aware of how subtle and out loud funny British humor can be. It took me a little while to "get" it, but when I did, I was hooked. Jerome's almost subliminal sarcasm is priceless. The same "three men" in the first book, are the same three who go on another holiday, and muddle through the same sort of adventures, all quite unplanned and unexpected.

  • ANGLO-GERMAN CULTURAL RELATIONS Language & Literature
ANGLO-GERMAN CULTURAL RELATIONS Language & literature, travel & tourism, c.1714–1914 The catalogue before you, published to mark my tenth anniversary as an independent bookseller, has been years in the making. Many people know me for selling Russian material, but in fact my interest in Germany About has always been stronger. German has always been my favoured foreign this language and I have enjoyed finding, researching, and writing about the catalogue books, manuscripts, music, and ephemera which make up this catalogue. It’s only when you specialize, and collect, in any depth that things start to get interesting, and that has certainly been the case here. You see connections, reactions, and developments; pieces of a historical jigsaw fall into place. The material here charts the cultural connections between the English- and German-speaking worlds in, roughly, the two hundred years between the Hanoverian Succession and the First World War. Through travel and translation, one culture discovers another; discovery then leads to influence. A German immigrant teaches music in London, the same year (1737) an Englishman in Göttingen compiles the first anthology of English literature for Germans. Later, in the 1760s, the first English translations of German literature are mirrored by the appearance of Wieland’s influential edition of Shakespeare. The catalogue documents two major eighteenth- century European literary events: Ossian and Werther, both linked by and to the young Goethe, whose own Faust so captured the English imagination in the nineteenth century. (The web of influence within literature itself is likewise tantalising: Werther reads Ossian, Frankenstein’s monster reads Werther.) The rise of the Gothic is also found here: Bürger’s Lenore in five English translations (1796–7), one of them Walter Scott’s first book, but the influence, surprisingly perhaps, was felt even earlier (and the other way round), in Sophia Lee’s The Recess, translated by Benedikte Naubert in 1786.

It is also observed that most of the available studies focus on the linguistic and cultural problems observed in the transference of humorous elements in audio-visual texts and deal only with the translation of the specific humorous elements (e.g. wordplay) in terms of verbal humor. As a conclusion, it has been found out that there does not exist a comprehensive study in the target system that provides detailed information on the translation of verbal humor and the problems to be observed in the translation process. Since the translation strategies display differences in relation to the type of humorous device that texts include, studies focusing on the translation of different humorous devices are required. For this purpose, a descriptive comparison of the three l f J m K. J m ’ f m u l Three Men in a Boat including different humorous devices has been carried out. In the comparisons, the g x ’ lu c h u c x ’ hum u ff c h b analyzed in a descriptive manner and an objective translation criticism has been presented.

Although he comes nowhere near Mark Twain, he still manages to do a credible job of it. Being Jerome he can't help doing so without humor and, I suspect, with tongue in cheek. Well worth reading! Jerome Klapka Jerome (2 May 1859 ndash; 14 June 1927) was an English writer and humorist, best known for the comic travelogue Three Men in a Boat (1889). All that has been done is to colour them; and, for this, no extra charge has been made. Well, no. There really were three friends — George Wingrave, Carl Hentschel and Jerome himself — on whom Jerome based his main characters, who made literally scores of trips up and down the Thames and cycled together across Europe to the Black Forest. Only Montmorency never existed. Jerome J. The landlady suggested that, to save money, the two might share a room. George, who remained a bachelor, rose to become manager of Barclays Bank in the Strand and outlived the other two, dying at the age of 79 in March At only 23 he set up on his own, the start of a long and distinguished career, one which merited an obituary in The Times. Again, it was the theatre that cemented the friendship with Jerome. He died in Januaryleaving a wife and three children. Induring the West End run of his one-man adaptation of Three Men in a Boatthe present writer was introduced to a sprightly, elderly lady. She had much enjoyed the performance, she said, and it was a book she knew extremely well. So there were the ready-made characters, save one little Jeromian twist.

  • “Jerome at the BBC”: Subversion, Caricature, and Humanity in Three Men in a Boat
http://dx.doi.org/10.7592/EJHR2014.2.2.sehmby European Journal of Humour Research 2 (2) 32–53 www.europeanjournalofhumour.org “Jerome at the BBC”: Subversion, caricature, and humanity in Three Men in a Boat Dalbir S. Sehmby Campus Saint-Jean, University of Alberta, Canada Abstract Through characters who openly express distress over imagined pains, “Jerome at the BBC” treats BBC’s Three Men in a Boat as a playful critique of heroic masculinity, or what the paper defines as confident cognisant agency. Airing in 1975, BBC’s adaptation is released after the media ascension of James Bond and in the heyday of tough Hollywood heroes, bold figures who refuse to complain about, let alone give in, to physical pain – unlike Jerome’s men. Jerome’s original and its BBC adaptation are layered comical texts. By channelling Jerome’s critique of the colonial, seafaring male into contemporary notions of the Hollywood-hero type, this paper examines the BBC film’s boisterous lack of masculine agency, the quiet parody of action sequences, and the gingerly movement towards a conclusion that does not bang, but whimpers. Moreover, the paper asserts that the humour also functions on a less grand level, by being an effective caricature of human behaviour – a healthy dose of cultural self-mockery. Furthermore, through revealing moments, by the telefilm’s end, the characters do not simply remain caricatures to be laughed at, but become identifiable and relatable human beings. Keywords: Three Men in a Boat; Jerome K. Jerome; BBC; Tom Stopard; Tim Curry; Michael Palin; Stephen Moore; Robinson Crusoe; Sherlock Holmes; James Bond The paper is dedicated to the memory of Lorene M.

Jerome Click here if your download doesn"t start automatically Three Men in a Boat and Three Men on the Bummel (Oxford World's Classics) Jerome K. Jerome Three Men in a Boat and Three Men on the Bummel (Oxford World's Classics) Jerome K. Jerome `Other works may excel this in depth of thought and knowledge of human nature: other books may rival it in originality and size; but, for hopeless and incurable vivacity, nothing yet discovered can surpass it.' (Jerome, Preface to Three Men in a Boat). Three Men in a Boat describes a comic expedition by middle-class Victorians up the Thames to Oxford. It provides brilliant snap-shots of London's playground in the late 1880s, where the fashionable steam-launches of river swells encounter the hired skiffs of city clerks. The medley of social vignettes, farcical incidents, descriptions of river fashions, and reflections on the Thames's history, is interspersed with humorous anecdotes told by a natural raconteur. Three Men on the Bummel records a similar escapade, a break from the claustrophobia of suburban life some ten years later; their cycling tour in the Black Forest, at the height of the new bicycling craze, affords Jerome the opportunity for a light-hearted scrutiny of German social customs at a time of increasing general interest in a country that he loved. This account of middle-aged Englishmen abroad is spiced with typical Jeromian humour. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe.
