English Humor At Its Best!By Judy MurphyStrictly by chance, I happened on Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men In A Boat. Having spent almost five years in England when I was a teenager, I love to read about the country and it's people. Three Men In A Boat is a very funny book. When I found Three Men on the Bummel, I was as delighted with it as I was with the "Boat" book. When I first went to England, at age sixteen, I wasn't aware of how subtle and out loud funny British humor can be. It took me a little while to "get" it, but when I did, I was hooked. Jerome's almost subliminal sarcasm is priceless. The same "three men" in the first book, are the same three who go on another holiday, and muddle through the same sort of adventures, all quite unplanned and unexpected. -

Three Man in a Boat [AAV]

Ltd 4. Place of Publication : 17, Chittaranjan Avenue Kolkata 700 072 5. Year of Publication : 2012 6. Acc. No. ----- Three Man in a Boat Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog) The story begins by introducing George, Harris, Jerome and Montmorency, a fox-terrier. The men are spending an evening in J.'s room, smoking and discussing illnesses they fancy they suffer from. They conclude they are all suffering from 'overwork' and need a holiday. A stay in the country and a sea trip are both considered, then rejected (J. describes the bad experiences had by his brother-in-law and a friend on sea trips). Eventually, the three decide on a boating holiday, up the River Thames, from Kingston upon Thames to Oxford, during which they'll camp, notwithstanding Jerome's anecdotes regarding previous experiences with tents and camping stoves. They embark the following Saturday. George must go to work that morning ("George goes to sleep at a bank from ten to four each day, except Saturdays, when they wake him up and put him outside at two") so J. and Harris make their way to Kingston by train. They are unable to find the correct train at Waterloo Station (the station's confusing layout was a well-known theme of Victorian comedy) so they bribe a train driver to take his train to Kingston, where they collect their hired boat and start their journey. -

ANGLO-GERMAN CULTURAL RELATIONS Language & Literature
ANGLO-GERMAN CULTURAL RELATIONS Language & literature, travel & tourism, c.1714–1914 The catalogue before you, published to mark my tenth anniversary as an independent bookseller, has been years in the making. Many people know me for selling Russian material, but in fact my interest in Germany About has always been stronger. German has always been my favoured foreign this language and I have enjoyed finding, researching, and writing about the catalogue books, manuscripts, music, and ephemera which make up this catalogue. It’s only when you specialize, and collect, in any depth that things start to get interesting, and that has certainly been the case here. You see connections, reactions, and developments; pieces of a historical jigsaw fall into place. The material here charts the cultural connections between the English- and German-speaking worlds in, roughly, the two hundred years between the Hanoverian Succession and the First World War. Through travel and translation, one culture discovers another; discovery then leads to influence. A German immigrant teaches music in London, the same year (1737) an Englishman in Göttingen compiles the first anthology of English literature for Germans. Later, in the 1760s, the first English translations of German literature are mirrored by the appearance of Wieland’s influential edition of Shakespeare. The catalogue documents two major eighteenth- century European literary events: Ossian and Werther, both linked by and to the young Goethe, whose own Faust so captured the English imagination in the nineteenth century. (The web of influence within literature itself is likewise tantalising: Werther reads Ossian, Frankenstein’s monster reads Werther.) The rise of the Gothic is also found here: Bürger’s Lenore in five English translations (1796–7), one of them Walter Scott’s first book, but the influence, surprisingly perhaps, was felt even earlier (and the other way round), in Sophia Lee’s The Recess, translated by Benedikte Naubert in 1786. -

As fresh and funny as the day it was published - 125 years ago!By Whistlers MomThe question of why some books "date" while some remain relevant and readable is one that has long puzzled writers, critics, and readers. THREE MEN IN A BOAT was published in 1889, was an immediate hit, and has never been out of print. After hearing about it all my life, I finally got around to reading it several years ago and am so glad to have it on my Kindle. The author acquired his odd name from his father, who changed his own name from Jerome Clapp to Jerome Clapp Jerome and named his son after himself. At some stage the son changed his middle name to Klapa. The family was impoverished after the father's early death and the son received little education. At various times he worked for the railroad, as an actor, as a school teacher, and as a law clerk. -

James Bond 007 Analysis Codebook
1 James Bond 007 Analysis Codebook Kimberly A. Neuendorf, Ph.D. Patrika Janstova Sharon Snyder-Suhy Vito Flitt School of Communication, Cleveland State University & Thomas D. Gore, M.A. School of Communication Studies, Kent State University REVISED September 29, 2010 Unit of Data Collection: Each female character depicted in each Bond film who speaks in the film to any other character, or who does not speak but is introduced by another character, or who does not speak but is shown and referred to by another character, or is shown in close-up (i.e., head shot or head and shoulders shot), or engages in any codable sexual behavior, or experiences codable physical harm. When judging whether the female character speaks or is referred to, the coder must be able to both hear the female character and see that character’s mouth moving as she speaks, or must hear her name when she is introduced or referred to. In addition, only females that appear to be over the age of 18 will be coded (no teenagers or children). Other Coding Instructions: Do not code the opening or closing credits. For all coding, use only the information available to you as a viewer (i.e., do not use information you might have as a fan of Bond films, a fan of a particular actor, etc.). Code a female character’s use of weapons/target of weapons only from the point at which she becomes a codable character. That is, if early in the film, a group of undifferentiated (and uncodable) females are carrying guns, and then later one of them becomes codable because she kisses Bond, do not go back and code her earlier gun-carrying behavior. -
Translating Humor: a Comparative Analysis of Three
TRANSLATING HUMOR: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THREE TRANSLATIONS OF THREE MEN IN A BOAT HARİKA KARAVİN BOĞAZİÇİ UNIVERSITY 2015 TRANSLATING HUMOR: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THREE TRANSLATIONS OF THREE MEN IN A BOAT Thesis submitted to the Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Translation Studies by Harika Karavin B U 2015 ABSTRACT Translating Humor: A Comparative Analysis of Three Translations of Three Men in a Boat When academic studies on translating humor are examined in Turkey, there are not sufficient sources or data providing enough space for the discussion of the issue. It is also observed that most of the available studies focus on the linguistic and cultural problems observed in the transference of humorous elements in audio-visual texts and deal only with the translation of the specific humorous elements (e.g. wordplay) in terms of verbal humor. As a conclusion, it has been found out that there does not exist a comprehensive study in the target system that provides detailed information on the translation of verbal humor and the problems to be observed in the translation process. Since the translation strategies display differences in relation to the type of humorous device that texts include, studies focusing on the translation of different humorous devices are required. For this purpose, a descriptive comparison of the three l f J m K. J m ’ f m u l Three Men in a Boat including different humorous devices has been carried out. In the comparisons, the g x ’ lu c h u c x ’ hum u ff c h b analyzed in a descriptive manner and an objective translation criticism has been presented. -
