English Humor At Its Best!By Judy MurphyStrictly by chance, I happened on Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men In A Boat. Having spent almost five years in England when I was a teenager, I love to read about the country and it's people. Three Men In A Boat is a very funny book. When I found Three Men on the Bummel, I was as delighted with it as I was with the "Boat" book. When I first went to England, at age sixteen, I wasn't aware of how subtle and out loud funny British humor can be. It took me a little while to "get" it, but when I did, I was hooked. Jerome's almost subliminal sarcasm is priceless. The same "three men" in the first book, are the same three who go on another holiday, and muddle through the same sort of adventures, all quite unplanned and unexpected. Picture Sherlock Holmes plopped into the 70's Height Ashbury scene. Both books are highly entertaining, and well worth the read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Well worth a read!By CustomerThough over 100 years old, the humor in this book is as spot-on today as it was then.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Another fabulous book by Jerome K. JeromeBy Natalie from TexasThe hilarious mis- adventures of the three friends continues with a tour of the German countryside. Jerome K. Jerome never fails to entertain and inform with his quick wit and picturesque writing style.A great book that is well worth reading. In this sequel to Jerome K. Jerome's most famous work "Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog)" we have a reunion of the three companions from the first book, minus the dog, who are setting out on a bicycle tour through the Black Forest of Germany. Written near the end of the Victorian bicycle craze in which bicycles became a common fixture amongst the middle-class for recreational purposes, "Three Men on the Bummel" is a masterfully humorous depiction of the era. With numerous comic mishaps Jerome crafts a travelogue in which fans of the first book will find an entertaining and funny addition to the story of these three interesting characters. From the Publisher5 1.5-hour cassettesAbout the AuthorAbout The Author Jerome Klapka Jerome (1859 – 1927) was an English writer best known for the comic travelogue Three Men in a Boat (1889), Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow (1886) and Second Thoughts of an Idle Fellow. Jerome was born in Caldmore, Walsall, England. He had two sisters, Paulina and Blandina, and one brother, Milton, who died at an early age. Owing to bad investments in the local mining industry, the family fell into poverty and debt collectors visited often, an experience Jerome described vividly in his autobiography My Life and Times (1926). The young Jerome attended St Marylebone Grammar School. He wished to go into politics or be a man of letters, but the death of his father when the younger Jerome was age 13 and of his mother when he was age 15 forced him to quit his studies and find work to support himself.
