Januar 2014 Vorwort Sehr geehrte Leserinnen und Leser, Dieses Jahr war fur¨ die FIN ein sehr erfolgreiches Jahr. Erstmalig wurden auch mit Beginn des Sommersemesters 2013 Studierende in den vier Bachelorstudieng¨ange der FIN imma- trikuliert. Im Bereich der Forschung hat sich an der FIN Einiges ergeben. Im Januar 2013 erhielt die AG von Prof. Dr. Myra Spiliopoulou die Information, dass die AG an einem der gr¨oßten Forschungsprojekten Europas beteiligt sein wird: am Human Brain Projekt (Si- mulation des menschlichen Gehirns). Die FIN ist 2013 mit einigen Arbeitsgruppen an der Entwicklung einer innovativen Medizintechnik beteiligt (Forschungscampus STIMULA- TE Solution Centre for Image Guided Local Therapies). Das BMBF-Projekt ViERforES wurde im Herbst 2013 erfolgreich beendet. Das UCC startete gemeinsam mit Fujitsu Tech- nology Solution das Forschungsprojekt SAP HANA Operations“. Auch im Jahre 2013 ” gingen wieder etliche Preise an FIN’ler. Hier seien u.a. zu nennen: 2. Platz Dirk-Bartz-Preis an Matthias Neugebauer, Preis fur¨ das 3. Best Paper auf der Konferenz Vision, Modeling and Visualization in Lugano an Kai Lawonn, Rocco Gasteiger und Prof. Dr. Bernhard Preim sowie der Best Paper Award auf dem IEEE International Symposium for Reliable Distributed Systems in Braga an Prof. Dr. J¨org Kaiser und Dr. Sebastian Zug. Der Hugo- Junkers-Preis, fur¨ beste Forschung und Innovation im Land Sachsen-Anhalt, ging an einige Mitarbeiter unseres An-Institutes METOP (u.a. Dr. Thomas Leich). Weitere Preise sind in den folgenden Kapiteln aufgelistet. Die 15. GI-Fachtagung Datenbanksysteme fur¨ Busi- ness, Technologie und Web mit uber¨ 200 Teilnehmern wurde von der AG Datenbanken organisiert und in Magdeburg ausgerichtet. Die FIN konnte das zweite Mal seit Bestehen der Fakult¨at alle an der FIN angelegten Professuren besetzen. Zu den neu berufenen Pro- fessoren geh¨oren: Prof. Dr. Frank Ortmeier, Prof. Dr. Till Mossakowski und Jun.-Prof. Dr. Christian Hansen. Erstmalig wurde an der FIN ein Honorarprofessor berufen. Diesen Ruf erhielt im Juni 2013 Dr. Alexander Zeier (In-Memory-Technologie). Die Dorothea- Erxleben-Gastprofessur der OVGU im Studienjahr 2013/2014 konnte erneut durch eine Informatikerin besetzt werden: PD Dr. Sanaz Mostaghim. Prof. Dr. Jurgen¨ Dassow, wel- cher im Jahre 2012 in den Ruhestand verabschiedet wurde, wurde zum Ehrensenator der OVGU ernannt. Aus Anlass seines 50. Geburtstages fand ein Ehrenkolloquium fur¨ Prof. Dr. Hans-Knud Arndt statt. Im April 2013 wurde ein Kooperationsvertrag zum Erwerb eines Doppelabschlusses im Studiengang Informatik (Bachelor und Master) sowie bei Pro- motionen zwischen der OVGU und der TU Sofia unterzeichnet und zum Wintersemester 2013/14 kamen die ersten Studierenden aus Sofia zum Studium nach Magdeburg. Die Ko- operation mit thail¨andischen Hochschuleinrichtungen zum Erwerb eines Doppelabschlus- ses im Masterstudiengang Digital Engineering wurde ebenfalls im Jahr 2013 angebahnt. Au- ßerdem besitzt die FIN je eine Juniorprofessur am ISG und am ITI. Der Inhaber der Juniorprofessur am ITI konnte im Jahre 2013 an der FIN eine regul¨are W2-Professur einnehmen. Die Nachbesetzung der Juniorprofessur l¨auft seitdem, eventuell wird eine andere Institutszuordnung vorgenommen. Am ISG wurde im Zusammenhang mit der Etablierung eines Forschungscampus zur Me- dizintechnik eine weitere (dritte) Juniorprofessur eingerichtet, die auch im Jahre 2013 besetzt werden konnte. Außerdem konnte an die FIN fur¨ das Studienjahr 2013/14 die Dorothea-Erxleben- Gastprofessur der Universit¨at vergeben werden.     No 97, September 2013 Editorial Recently WRI started the Twitter hashtag #EverydayMilitarism. Inspired by the popular #EverydaySexism trend, we encourage others to post about how militarism and military propaganda is present in their lives, as well as posting example of this ourselves. When you start to look for it, you can see military values infiltrating public and private lives in more ways than you could initially imagine. The publication of our book “Sowing Seeds: The Militarisation of Youth and How to Counter it” is in the same vein, denouncing the military presence and influence in education, in our social behaviour, in the entertainment industry, etc. The Action against NEAT in LuleÅ , Sweden.     Leaders in the Civic Engagement Movement Interviews with 61 leaders from 26 universities in 17 countries written by 15 authors www.tnlc.org/lcem 1 Dedication to the memory of a pioneering leader and champion of university civic engagement Professor Russel Botman, Former Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University “Africa needs a new generation of responsible leaders who will be willing to place the public good before self-interest.” Professor Botman is one of the pioneers of higher education transformation in South Africa. His legacy speaks of Hope, not as goodwill sentiment, but as a palpable directive for efforts in teaching and learning, community engagement and research. We will remember him for his commitment to promote innovation and inclusivity of an institution that can stand as an African and International beacon in Higher Education. Professor Botman displayed courage, patience and determination in seeking solutions to many of his university’s most difficult challenges. Botman was born in Bloemfontein on October 18 1953. In 1976, the year of the Soweto uprising, he led his fellow students in human rights protests against apartheid laws. He was ordained in 1982, he served as minister of religion of the Wynberg congregation of the Dutch Reformed Mission Church from 1982 to 1993. In 1994, he joined the University of Western Cape as a senior lecturer in practical theology. Botman was promoted to associate professor and dean of the faculty of religion and theology in 1999. In 2000, he joined Stellenbosch University as a professor in missiology and public theology. He became vice-rector for teaching at Stellenbosch University in 2002 and served in that position until his historic appointment as the institution’s first black rector and vice-chancellor in 2007.

Saudi Arabia remains a relatively closed society; gender mixing is restricted to a tight circle of relatives and family friends, and direct criticism of the ruling family or powerful con- servative clergy is frowned upon. Morality police patrol the kingdom’s few public spaces such as shopping malls to enforce rigid social rules. Cyberspace presents considerably more complicated chal- lenges than a shopping centre, however, and Saudi authorities are alarmed by the unfettered contact that the Internet allows, including for activists who spread news and information not covered by state media.
