    Chapter 2 China’s cars and parts: development of an industry and strategic focus on Europe Peter Pawlicki and Siqi Luo 1. Introduction Initially, Chinese investments – across all industries in Europe – especially acquisitions of European companies were discussed in a relatively negative way. Politicians, trade unionists and workers, as well as industry representatives feared the sell-off and the subsequent rapid drainage of industrial capabilities – both manufacturing and R&D expertise – and with this a loss of jobs. However, with time, coverage of Chinese investments has changed due to good experiences with the new investors, as well as the sheer number of investments. Europe saw the first major wave of Chinese investments right after the financial crisis in 2008–2009 driven by the low share prices of European companies and general economic decline. However, Chinese investments worldwide as well as in Europe have not declined since, but have been growing and their strategic character strengthening. Chinese investors acquiring European companies are neither new nor exceptional anymore and acquired companies have already gained some experience with Chinese investors. The European automotive industry remains one of the most important investment targets for Chinese companies. As in Europe the automotive industry in China is one of the major pillars of its industry and its recent industrial upgrading dynamics. Many of China’s central industrial policy strategies – Sino-foreign joint ventures and trading market for technologies – have been established with the aim of developing an indigenous car industry with Chinese car OEMs. These instruments have also been transferred to other industries, such as telecommunications equipment.

Januar 2014 Vorwort Sehr geehrte Leserinnen und Leser, Dieses Jahr war fur¨ die FIN ein sehr erfolgreiches Jahr. Erstmalig wurden auch mit Beginn des Sommersemesters 2013 Studierende in den vier Bachelorstudieng¨ange der FIN imma- trikuliert. Im Bereich der Forschung hat sich an der FIN Einiges ergeben. Im Januar 2013 erhielt die AG von Prof. Dr. Myra Spiliopoulou die Information, dass die AG an einem der gr¨oßten Forschungsprojekten Europas beteiligt sein wird: am Human Brain Projekt (Si- mulation des menschlichen Gehirns). Die FIN ist 2013 mit einigen Arbeitsgruppen an der Entwicklung einer innovativen Medizintechnik beteiligt (Forschungscampus STIMULA- TE Solution Centre for Image Guided Local Therapies). Das BMBF-Projekt ViERforES wurde im Herbst 2013 erfolgreich beendet. Das UCC startete gemeinsam mit Fujitsu Tech- nology Solution das Forschungsprojekt SAP HANA Operations“. Auch im Jahre 2013 ” gingen wieder etliche Preise an FIN’ler. Hier seien u.a. zu nennen: 2. Platz Dirk-Bartz-Preis an Matthias Neugebauer, Preis fur¨ das 3. Martens2* Abstract Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a devastating and highly prevalent neurodegenerative disease for which only symptomatic treatment is available. In order to develop a truly effective disease-modifying therapy, improvement of our current understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying PD pathogenesis and progression is crucial. For this purpose, standardization of research protocols and disease models is necessary. As human dopaminergic neurons, the cells mainly affected in PD, are difficult to obtain and maintain as primary cells, current PD research is mostly performed with permanently established neuronal cell models, in particular the neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y lineage. This cell line is frequently chosen because of its human origin, catecholaminergic (though not strictly dopaminergic) neuronal properties, and ease of maintenance. However, there is no consensus on many fundamental aspects that are associated with its use, such as the effects of culture media composition and of variations in differentiation protocols. Here we present the outcome of a systematic review of scientific articles that have used SH-SY5Y cells to explore PD. We describe the cell source, culture conditions, differentiation protocols, methods/approaches used to mimic PD and the preclinical validation of the SH-SY5Y findings by employing alternative cellular and animal models. Thus, this overview may help to standardize the use of the SH-SY5Y cell line in PD research and serve as a future user’sguide.
