Dear Everyone, What a busy time this has been for the village. As well as all the usual clubs and activities, there has been extra events. The Rudston Village Show was an amazing event this year, with so many entries. I was honoured to be one of the judges and what an experience that was. The standard of the entries was stunning. I just wanted to give everyone a prize! Well done to all those who submitted such thoughtful entries. A big thank you to Teresa and her team for organising yet another successful Rudston Show. The play, “This might Hurt” by John Godber was a gently fun- ny, but quietly impassioned tragi-comedy. Despite the usual Godber touches, with rhyming couplets, the mood of the play was serious, but with laughter. It gave us much to think about, as the play inves- tigated what we deserve and often receive from the health service. It was wonderful to see such a large audience; ninety four people. We really couldn’t have squashed anymore in! It has given the vil- lage hall committee much to think about, in terms of purchasing some sort of staging, so that all the audience has a clearer view. There are more events in the near future, these being a Bingo and Quiz evening and the start of the Village Hall Pop Up Pub. Read on for more details. Special thanks to Chris Gatenby for sending us the details of the young men from Rudston, who died in World War 1; particularly poignant as we approach Remembrance Day in the 100th year an- niversary. At the back of Rudston Church there is a display about the WW1 men who gave their lives. The display includes details of where they were killed and in which cemetery they were interred. Thanks to John Walker for arranging this. The next meeting of the Rudston Heritage History Group will be on Thursday 22 nd November at 7.00pm in the Village Hall when there will be a presentation on the ‘Malton Dodger’ by Wolds Railway Heritage group: admission £2.00 includes refresh- ments. All Saints, Kilham have some special arrangements in the run up to Remembrance day this year: ‘Lest We Forget’. Plans are underway for an exhibition of World War 1 remembrance & memorabilia in Church at Kilham. The church will be open from 12 - 4pm on Sunday, 4th November through until Sunday, 11th November from 10 am - 4 pm. Each day at noon will be a time of worship and prayers for Peace and Hope and there will be an opportunity to light a candle for Peace or for a loved one. Light refreshments will be available to visitors every day. As well as artifacts, there will be a projected presentation from the Imperial War Museum. On the pews are 20 cardboard silhouettes, each one representing a young man from the village, whose life was snatched from him. Continued on page 4 3

From page 3 The story of each of these young soldiers, in most cases including a photograph, will be displayed so that they will become real to us and we can acknowledge what happened to these, our men and boys. To the left of the pathway, visitors will see a profile of a WW1 soldier, designed and crafted in Kilham. After sunset the shadow of this soldier is cast on the clock tower each evening. It is well worth driving through Kilham and past the Church one evening just to see it. On Saturday, 10th November at noon , at All Saint’s, Kilham, following the short act of worship, a light, 'take-away' or ‘eat in’ lunch will be available featuring food the soldiers might have had; ham and corn beef sandwiches, hash, trench cake etc. Every Blessing Information of interest from Harry M Whalley Email [email protected] Hello, as you can see I live in France & notice you are twinned with Millau, the site of the fantastic bridge over the Tarn . You may be interested , but you are probably already aware, of the Menhir in Dol de Bretagne, a very similar monolith to the one at All Saints Churchyard in Rud- ston. I have uploaded a pic from the Wik- ipedia website where a detailed descrip- tion is available; very interesting !!

We now have a new cooker hood/fan in the village hall kitchen. This was very kindly donated by MICHAEL ROEBUCK , Westerland, Marton Lane, Rudston It has really made cooking in the kitchen much easier, also the fire alarm no longer goes off at the sight of a frying pan. Thank you , Michael from all the residents of the village.

4 This is being written before Oc- tober’s meeting when John Walker is talking on “Life in Rudston in the 1800’s” This is based on the Consta- ble’s book which has given some re- markable material on Rudston, and I know it will have been a very interesting and entertaining evening. The November meeting is on THURSDAY NOVEMBER 22 at 7pm in the Village Hall, when the Wolds Railway Heritage Group will give a presentation on “The Malton Dodger” This should be a fascinating presentation. Everyone welcome, ad- mission £2 which includes refreshments. Chris Gatenby

Bowls club news this month follows Octo- RUDSTON ber's annual general meeting. As men- BOWLS tioned at the start of the season numbers dwindled, but accounts remain healthy. CLUB There are plans to spend an amount of cash over the close season though. (Outside funding has been investigated in the past without success). The club's committee continues unchanged, likewise my own “temporary” position of secretary. The annual lunch, for which we pay, is to be held at the Sefton Hotel, , on the 9 th December. Trophy presentations are also held then. The new Indoor season has been affected by village hall booking problems, but should be settled on regular Wednesday afternoons from November. Numbers tend to fluctuate, but the invitation still holds to anyone new to the game. Phillip Crossland

War Heroes of Rudston The installation “Remembering the Fallen 1914 – 1918, The Great War Heroes of Bridlington” at the Priory has a silhouette for each of the 335 Bridlington men who died in the war. Michelle and Frederick Stephens who live in the Old Town set themselves the task of finding out how many of these men came from the Old Town. Using Chris Bonnet’s book on the War Heroes and fur- ther research of their own they produced a “tribute trail” where each house or shop which had been the home or workplace of a war hero was invited to display a printed page giving some details of his life and death. Michelle and Frederick then researched the Fallen from Rudston using various sources including the census and the War Graves Com- mission website. The result of their research is that for each of the 13 men who fell in the war and who were born, lived in, or are buried at Rudston there is not only a printed page with some brief details, but a file with further information. These were displayed at the last History Group meeting when Mr Chris Bonnet spoke on the Heroes of the First World War, and attracted much interest and admiration. The printed sheets are now on display in church, and the information from them is set out here. Next month in the Rudston newsletter there will be a more detailed article on one man, based on Michelle and Frederick’s research with more material if some- thing has been found.

Missing Word for October…..MARGARET LOCKWOOD 16 CORNER GARDEN A number of people have asked how the Corner Garden came to be, so Trevor has written about it.

Corner Garden is an old chalk pit used by the residents of Rudston for many years, to dispose of rubbish. An area of approx. 2 acres was closed and capped off with a layer of soil and planted with trees (mainly ash and sycamore) in approx.1973. Since then it was allowed to run derelict. About two years ago, a group of parish councillors, led by chairman, Neil Watson, decided that it would be an asset to the vil- lage to bring the pit into use as a nature reserve, viewing and picnic areas. The concept was to make the area accessible, with a path around the site, creating 2 separate areas. The site was to require the minimum of maintenance. Grants were gained, a new fence built, 2 bench seats and a picnic table was purchased. Thanks to the villagers sponsorships, a bird feeding station, nest boxes, bat box and a hedgehog house were fixed. Thanks to the gift of trees, the diversity of tree cover is increased. English blue bells, snow drops and other bulbs were planted and allowed to naturalize. The garden is named after Duncan Corner, who was a parish coun- cillor for many years. Trevor Silverwood.
