Editor’s Letter

Dear Everyone, Welcome to any new comers, who have recently moved into our village. I hope that you will enjoy being part of our community and as you will see, if you read on, there are many activities with which you can become involved. One of our talented village hall committee members is re- sponsible for the board displayed outside the hall, telling every- one about future events. Thank you Becky. I will also include a diary of events in each edition of the newsletter. We hope to include the events in the Free Press, in the future. The Village Hall Committee would really like to have more varied activities in the village hall, so if anyone has any ideas, please email and tell me about them. I have been trying to arrange another Village Hall Play and I know that many of you will be disappointed to know that the com- pany who visited in April, are not available until next year, so I have invited the Reform Theatre Company, who are well know and have previously performed in venues in this area. As this theatre group have a larger cast it is more expen- sive, but on speaking to many people from the village, they do not mind paying a bit more for tickets. The date for this John Godber comedy, “This Might Hurt", is October 13th. We hope that many of you will be able to join us. More details in next month’s edition. We are certainly enjoying beautiful weather at the moment, mak- ing our village and surrounding areas, look absolutely enchanting. Good luck to all those who are awaiting exam results; here’s hoping that your dreams and aspirations are fulfilled. Have a wonderful summer everyone.

Rudston Parish Council News The next Parish Council meeting is to be held on Wednesday 22nd August at 7.30pm in the village hall. We are pleased to announce that Mr Ian Simmonds was co- opted as a member of the Parish Council at the last meeting.

The Bowls Evening League has already RUDSTON passed the halfway point and we have just BOWLS had two successive Tuesdays without a game, to correspond with the two at the start CLUB of the season. There are also odd Thursdays off for those “knocked out” of the Knockout Cup competition, and Rudston fell at the first hurdle. In the league we seem to have settled down to an average “win a game - lose a game” balance. At the time of writing we are lying fifth of the ten in the division. The Wednesday team are fairing a little better and are third in their division of nine. The Wednesday season is longer, and there are no games on 18 th July when “everyone” goes to Driff. Show(!) but as league games wind down it gives chance to start our individual club com- petition matches. No-one from the club entered the compe- titions this year. On the not-so-competitive side we also had two Friendly matches in June. The first of those at Flamborough was the day after that Saturday of torrential rain, but the sun came out and all was well. The following week was the return game at Leven, where the sun was not only out it was boiling! (The refreshment is non- alcoholic, in case you were picturing Pimms or something). Phillip Crossland

“BECK CLEAN”

Hello, My name is William Hirst I am currently working for the Wildlife Trust on the Tomorrows Natural Leaders project and I am or- ganizing a beck clean of the Gypsy Race in Rudston along Water Lane. The aim of my projects is to clean and increase the flow of the beck in the village which will enable wildlife to build habitats and set- tle which hopefully will encourage people to go outside and see the wildlife. I intend to carry out this project on Saturday August 11 th , and any volunteer would be most welcome to meet at the village hall for 9:45 am with a view of starting for 10:00 am and looking to finish around 3:30 pm. Any support would be greatly appreciated, if you can commit to a full day that would be wonderful but even if it’s just an hour or two that would be great as well. Tea’s, coffee’s and biscuits will be provided but please bring packed lunch. I will be providing equipment but if an- yone has an additional wheel barrow ( I will bring 2) that would be appreciated. I have attached a picture (taken in April) of the part of the beck in wish to clean. Looking forward to it. Kind Regards, Will Will Hirst Tomorrow’s Natural Leader Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Tel: 01482 441013 Email: [email protected] Website: http://www.ywt.org.uk 7 Dear Ms J. Hobson, (Secretary Rudston Parish Council) I am contacting you to tell you about the UK Government Bet- ter Broadband subsidy voucher scheme. The scheme subsidies the cost of a basic broadband package for anyone with poor broadband speeds (less than 2Mbps), who will not benefit from the superfast broadband roll out. We would like to ensure that as many homes and business within the Rudston Parish are given the opportunity to take ad- vantage of this scheme, which has been extended until Dec 2018. Already more than 10,000 UK homes and businesses have benefitted, with subsidies worth over £3 million in total awarded across the UK. The subsidy scheme will ensure that no household or business will need to pay more than £400 to access a basic broadband service over a 12 month period. Could you help us increase awareness of this scheme by dis- playing the attached poster on your parish council noticeboard? We can provide 1 or 2 printed laminated copies if required. In addition, if you have a local newsletter or any other communication methods to raise the awareness of this scheme we would appreciate your assis- tance. Households and businesses who take advantage of this scheme will still be eligible for a superfast broadband service in the future. More information on the scheme, eligibility criteria, how to apply and suppliers taking part in the scheme can be found on our website here: www.broadband.eastriding.gov.uk/better If residents or businesses have any further questions about the scheme or need any help with the application process please con- tact us via email at: [email protected] Should online access be difficult, free unlimited Wi-Fi and com- puter access is available at any of our branch libraries and multi- service centres. Kind regards, Adam Boone Digital Services Officer Council 8 Corner Garden Maintenance The Corner Garden is now being enjoyed by both residents and visitors to the village. In order to keep this village asset at its best we need your help. If anyone has any free time which they wish to give to help maintain the Corner Garden then please get in touch with the Clerk - Tel: 07542874957 or e- mail [email protected] We also need help with feeding the birds. The cost of bird feed during the winter months is around £25 per month. If anyone wishes to donate £25 or more to help with these costs or if anyone wishes to donate bird feed then please get in touch with the Clerk Jen Hobson - Tel: 07542874957 or e-mail [email protected] RUDSTON VILLAGE BINGO I expect many of you support this charity, when you tick off all the lotto numbers on your card each week. The Bingo supports many village charities, this newsletter being one of them. The weekly numbers are delivered to your door, and your £1 a week is also collected monthly. Paula, who is the volunteer running this scheme, tells me that we need more residents to support this; so if you do not receive a weekly bingo card and would like to partake, please ring Paula on 420708 Sue
