Die Fürstenspiegel des karolingischen Frankenreichs sind in der Forschung als eigenes, zeitge­ nössisches Genre seit Langem geläufig und wurden viel diskutiert; ihre formale Heterogenität blieb jedoch immer rätselhaft. Sie erschließt sich, wenn man die Texte als Bestandteile eines ge­ samtgesellschaftlichen Mahndiskurses versteht.     Passions of the Pope: Analysing emotional rhetoric in Pope Gregory VII’s letters Kieryn Mascarenhas 2020 Illustration of Pope Gregory VII from Paul of Bernried’s Vita Gregorii VII (c. 1128), Heiligenkreuz Abbey, Austria A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of BA (Hons) in History, University of Sydney ABSTRACT In recent years, emotions have become a popular lens for historical analysis. Building on existing scholarship, this thesis explores the emotions of Pope Gregory VII, an eleventh- century pope notable for his reform efforts and role in the Investiture Controversy. Focusing on Gregory’s papal letters, this study will analyse the displays of three key emotions: anger, love, and sorrow, to determine how and why Gregory used these displays to achieve his political and religious objectives. Gregory wielded emotional rhetoric in his papal letters to solidify his papal authority, construct and maintain key relationships, and garner support for his reform agenda. 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am deeply indebted to Dr Hélène Sirantoine and Dr John Gagné.     MIRACULA, SAINTS’ CULTS AND SOCIO-POLITICAL LANDSCAPES BOBBIO, CONQUES AND POST-CAROLINGIAN SOCIETY Faye Taylor, MA Thesis submitted for examination to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy JULY 2012 ii ABSTRACT Despite the centrality of monastic sources to debates about social and political transformation in post-Carolingian Europe, few studies have approached the political and economic status of monasteries and their saints’ cults in this context, to which this thesis offers a comparative approach. Hagiography provides an interesting point of analysis with respect to the proposition of mutation féodale, and more importantly to that of the mutation documentaire and its relation to monastic ‘reform’, which Part I discusses. Parts II and III consider Bobbio and Conques, and their miracula (dedicated to San Colombano and Sainte Foy) within their respective socio-political environments, since the best of the recent scholarship concerning the millennial period has emphasized the specificity of regional experience. At Bobbio the closeness of the king physically and some continuity in royal practices between the tenth and eleventh centuries shaped monastic experience. It directed and sometimes restricted monastic discourse, which maintained an older tradition of general service to the kingdom, although innovations in relic usage helped monastic negotiations with the sovereign. At Conques, the waning of royal control created space for literary and cultic advances that served to bolster the monastery’s position within local power structures. In this landscape older forms of public authority were purposefully minimized and hierarchy and landownership were negotiated between aristocrats, including Sainte Foy at the head of Conques.

    1 Frédéric Mistral et Jean Aicard Le 8 août 1818, naît, à Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône), Joseph ROUMANILLE, fils d’un couple de jardiniers. Le 8 septembre 1830, naît, au Mas du Juge, à Maillane (Bouches-du-Rhône), Frédéric MISTRAL, fils d’un couple de ménagers. Les deux petites villes ne sont distantes que de 7 kilomètres, cependant les deux familles ne se connaissent pas. En 1845, Joseph ROUMANILLE est maître d’études (à la fois professeur et surveillant) au pensionnat Dupuy, en Avignon. Un dimanche où il est de service, il accompagne les internes aux vêpres à l’église des Carmes. Pendant la cérémonie, il surprend un élève qui griffonne en cachette. ROUMANILLE s’avance et confisque le morceau de papier, s’attendant à y trouver quelque billet doux !... Mais qu’elle n’est pas sa surprise lorsqu’il découvre qu’il s’agit en réalité de la traduction en vers provençaux du psaume de la pénitence !!! « J’en fus si ému, dira-t-il plus tard, que j’en pleurais de joie ! » A la sortie, il s’approche du jeune interne, lui rend son papier et, loin de le punir, le félicite : « Alors, lui dit-il, vous écrivez en provençal ! » puis il lui demande son nom. Cet adolescent s’appelle Frédéric MISTRAL !!!... C’est la première rencontre entre les deux hommes, rencontre qui aura de grandes conséquences pour l’avenir de la langue provençale. Tous deux sont animés par la même passion : un amour inconsidéré pour la langue du terroir. Un autre élève se joint à eux : Anselme MATHIEU, de deux ans l’aîné de MISTRAL.
