Giannakaki Agrokipio, 73100 Chania Tel: +30281083434, Fax: +302821093963, Email: [email protected] 1 INTRODUCTION Oliviculture has always been connected to the history of Crete and apparently dates back as far as 8.000 years. It is connected to the tradition, religion, art as well as the social and economic life of the inhabitants ever since civilization started leaving its mark on the island. Today, olive orchards constitute one of the most dominant elements in the natural environment of the island, covering 65% of the farming land, and offer employment to almost the majority of its farming families. Oliviculture together with tourism make up two of the most important economic resources in Crete. It offers a significant income to the island and constitutes an interesting and cherished activity to a large part of its inhabitants. The aim of this study was to identify the problems, to come up with ways to take advantage of new possibilities-opportunities and to apply modern proposals – trends in the field of oliviculture. The main topics of this study are: • Identification and study of oliviculture systems. -

Five Counterfeit Hotspots in Greece That Brand Owners Should Be Aware Of
9 Dec Five counterfeit hotspots in Greece that brand 2019 owners should be aware of In the latest edition of our regular series on markets around the world that reportedly engage in the trade of fake goods, we head to the historical landscapes of Greece. In an article earlier in the year, The National Herald declared that Greece is “one of the world’s gateways for counterfeit goods”. Reports indicate that fake goods are costing the Greek economy upwards of €1.3 billion annually, representing around 12% of sales for companies most at risk to IP violations, such as those in the pharmaceutical, clothing or cosmetics sectors. For that reason, we reached out to Konstantinos Logaras, founder and attorney-at-law at Logaras & Associates in Athens, who gave insights on how brand owners can effectively tackle fakes goods in Greece, and some of the market places around the country that should be on enforcement radars. In a nutshell, what should a rights holder know about enforcing against counterfeit goods in Greece? Being at the crossroad of three continents and a gateway to Europe, Greece struggles to tackle growing quantities of counterfeit products imported in or transiting the country. Implementing an anti-counterfeit strategy in Greece is an intricate and strenuous exercise which must be devised well in advance and typically involves both experienced attorneys and investigation agencies. Due to its geographical traits, seasonality and particularities of local communities, the enforcement of rights requires a high degree of flexibility and vigilance. The majority of physical counterfeiting activity in Greece is found in popular tourist destinations, notably on the islands’ local markets or trade fairs. -

Three elements are considered essential concerning the coastal resorts morphological change: hosts, guests, and politics. Drawing from historical data from mass developed coastal resorts of the 1 island of Crete in Greece, ten principal characteristics are identified as determinants of the morphological change of coastal resorts. A temporal model of unplanned resort morphological change is also proposed. Although the study was constrained by limited data availability, the proposed model is deemed capable to represent the morphological change of Cretan mass-developed coastal resorts. Keywords: hosts, guests, politics, morphology, urbanization, coast, resort cycle, Crete. ________________________________________________________________________ Konstantinos Andriotis holds a PhD in Tourism Development and Planning (Bournemouth University, 2000). He is a postdoctoral fellow engaged in tourist satisfaction (Hellenic Open University) and lectures at the School of Social Studies, Hellenic Open University (Patra, Greece. Email <[email protected]>). His research interests include development and planning, community perceptions, coastal resorts morphology and island development. 2 INTRODUCTION The increasing demand for beach holidays brought about the emergence of quite a number of coastal resorts and the planning of many new ones worldwide. -
