Sotto la sua ombra protettiva si vogliono svi- luppare, in forma di collane, progetti editoriali dedicati ad ambiti diversi ma tutti ancorati alla storia e alla cultura delle Venezie: oltre agli studi sulla testualità lette- raria Antico Regime e moderna (terreno abituale degli studiosi che finora hanno alimentato il palchetto della nostra collezione), la ricerca sulla letteratura contem- poranea, sui fondi librari (manoscritti e a stampa), sulle fonti d’archivio, sulla storia linguistica e socio-culturale. «Carte del Contemporaneo » è la prima di queste collane, dedicata alla ricerca sulla cultura del Novecento veneto, vista attraverso una lente particolare, i docu- menti d’archivio; essa nasce innanzitutto come estensione editoriale dell’Archivio omonimo, creato per impulso di Silvana Tamiozzo Goldmann e di Francesco Bru- ni, e ospitato nella sede del CISVe, dove oggi sono conservati, per la comunità degli studiosi, i fondi Ernesto Calzavara, Pier Maria Pasinetti, Armando Pizzinato, Carlo Della Corte. La collana intende essere il luogo in cui filologia materiale, critica genetica e ana- lisi letteraria possano agire perché le pratiche della catalogazione e della conserva- zione dei beni d’archivio siano anche il lievito vitale della ricezione critica di testi e autori; essa ospiterà quindi edizioni di inediti e di epistolari, studi filologici e critici, repertori catalografici, che abbiano come oggetto le carte inedite depositate nel- l’Archivio, e come fine la loro interpretazione e valorizzazione. -

If the study of artistic exchange across national boundaries has grown exponentially over the past decade as art historians have interrogated historical patterns, cultural dynamics, and the historical consequences of globalization, within such study the exchange between Italy and the United States in the twentieth-century has emerged as an exemplary case.1 A major reason for this is the history of significant migration from the former to the latter, contributing to the establishment of transatlantic networks and avenues for cultural exchange. Waves of migration due to economic necessity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries gave way to the smaller in size but culturally impactful arrival in the U.S. of exiled Jews and political dissidents who left Fascist Italy during Benito Mussolini’s regime. In reverse, the presence in Italy of Americans – often participants in the Grand Tour or, in the 1950s, the so-called “Roman Holiday” phenomenon – helped to making Italian art, past and present, an important component in the formation of American artists and intellectuals.2 This history of exchange between Italy and the U.S. -

Duran Methodologies of Exchange: MoMA’s “Twentieth- Century Italian Art” (1949), Issue 3, January 2020 ABSTRACT This essay considers the category and style of “Neocubism” within the Italian avant- garde of the 1930s and 40s. A term applied to artists such as the Corrente group and Il Fronte Nuovo delle Arti, “Neocubism” became loaded with political and aesthetic connotations in the last years of Fascism and the first of the postwar period. These young Italian artists were deeply influenced by the work of the Cubists, but especially that of Pablo Picasso. His 1937 Guernica became an ideological touchstone for a new generation that had endured Fascism and joined in the partisan fight against Nazi occupation. This essay seeks to disentangle this knotted legacy of Cubism and point to the rapidly changing stakes of the surrounding discourse, as Italy transitioned from Fascist state to postwar Republic to Cold War frontier. Adding nuance and diversity to a term so often applied monolithically will allow for a truer sense of Italian Neocubism when and if it was manifested throughout this period. To be found amidst a panorama of earlier, often better-known examples of Italian modernism on display at the Museum of Modern Art’s 1949 exhibition Twentieth-Century Italian Art was a new generation of painters and sculptors, thrust into the spotlight of a discourse within which they had not yet found their place. -

http://dx.doi.org/10.25038/am.v0i12.164 Luca Guido* College of Architecture, The University of Oklahoma, USA “The Biennale of Dissent 1977” and Italian Architecture during the 1970s Abstract: In 1977, “The Biennale of Dissent” was a significant event in the history of the anti-Soviet dissidence. In Italy during the 1970s intellectuals, artists and architects had many connections with Marxist theories and the Soviet Union, but their role, referred to in this event, appears complex and, on occasions, contradictory. The Italian cultural world mirrored a political situation, in which it became a duty to take up a position which opposed Italy’s Fascist past. Artistic and political opinions coincided. For this reason, in Italy the culture of dissidence led to a heated debate. One generation of architects was born in this context and few were able to think outside the box. The interpretation proposed for Italian architecture and the masters of the time should prompt a consideration of the current absence of Italian critics and architects in international debates. Keywords: Venice Biennale, Soviet dissidence, Italian architecture, Italian Communist Party, Italian Socialist Party Soviet Dissidence The political picture taking shape at the end of the 70s in Italy was of extreme interest in the history of anti-Soviet dissidence. During those years, numerous West- ern, cultural institutions concentrated on giving voice to intellectuals considered per- sona non grata by the Soviet regime. This resulted in the political solution of the Cold War, aimed at seeking a strategic, military equilibrium and cultural events which rep- resented crucial moments of public confrontation between opposing blocks. -

Renato Guttuso’s Boogie Woogie in Rome (1953): A Geopolitical Tableau Romy Golan Plaid: A ‘Bad Gestalt’ A quasi-panic underlies Renato Guttuso’s Boogie Woogie in Rome, a large painting (170 × 205.5 cm) exhibited in the Italian section of the Central pavilion at the 1954 Venice Biennale (plate 1). Painted by Italy’s foremost exponent of socialist realism who, in the eyes of many critics, was the most important painter of his generation, it depicts a group of teenagers dancing frenetically in front of Mondrian’s eponymous painting of 1942–43. The neoplasticist language of right angles and primary colours in the Mondrian painting is absorbed and morphed into the acidic colours of the kids’ plaid and striped clothes. With this impertinent placement, Guttuso demotes the syncopated beat of one of Mondrian’s best-known works, and an icon of modernism, to the status of club or disco decoration.1 The dissonant optical effect produced by the plaid shirts and the striped turtlenecks, juxtaposed with the coloured line segments of Mondrian’s Broadway Boogie Woogie painting, was aimed to produce what we may call a ‘bad Gestalt’ (plate 2).2 As if in response to the jarring optical effect of the painting, a young woman (whom we might read as Guttuso’s alter ego) sits despondently and disaffectedly at a café table in the painting’s lower right, grasping an empty drink, her cigarette butt burning out in an ashtray. Guttuso’s Boogie Woogie in Rome belongs to the family of works the art historian Victor Stoichita has defined as ‘metapaintings’: An image hangs on the wall and in some ways clearly relates to the main scene. -
