That boom constitutes the starting point of this study. Our research questions have been formulated as follows: - Are later translations of the same source text closer to the original than are the earlier translations? If so, why? - Does the appearance of a canonical translation stop the cycle of retranslations? If so, why? - Does a target culture have more retranslations if it is more prosperous? These questions lead to the following hypotheses: (1) the later the translation, the more accurate, literal and complete it is; (2) the appearance of a canonical (re)translation of a source text by a well-known scholar does not stop the cycle of its retranslation; (3) the more prosperous the target culture, the more retranslations it has. In order to test these hypotheses, the study works from (re)translations to the translation market. First, source texts are selected based on archival retrieval: the National Library of China indicates that Pride and Prejudice and David Copperfield have remained among the most frequently translated classics since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. To conduct a case study of these novels, one translation from the 1950s and several retranslations from the 1990s have been selected for each of the works. A comparative and descriptive study has been made of those translations, with regard to both the text proper and the paratexts. Then the degrees of formal and semantic accuracy in the translations are discussed, using quantitative analysis. The quantitative analysis is supplemented by a qualitative analysis, focusing on translation features such as accuracy, translation strategy and completeness.     Miller, China Leadership Monitor, No. 26 The CCP Central Committee’s Leading Small Groups Alice Miller For several decades, the Chinese leadership has used informal bodies called “leading small groups” to advise the Party Politburo on policy and to coordinate implementation of policy decisions made by the Politburo and supervised by the Secretariat. Because these groups deal with sensitive leadership processes, PRC media refer to them very rarely, and almost never publicize lists of their members on a current basis. Even the limited accessible view of these groups and their evolution, however, offers insight into the structure of power and working relationships of the top Party leadership under Hu Jintao. A listing of the Central Committee “leading groups” (lingdao xiaozu 领导小组), or just “small groups” (xiaozu 小组), that are directly subordinate to the Party Secretariat and report to the Politburo and its Standing Committee and their members is appended to this article. First created in 1958, these groups are never incorporated into publicly available charts or explanations of Party institutions on a current basis. PRC media occasionally refer to them in the course of reporting on leadership policy processes, and they sometimes mention a leader’s membership in one of them. The only instance in the entire post-Mao era in which PRC media listed the current members of any of these groups was on 2003, when the PRC-controlled Hong Kong newspaper Wen Wei Po publicized a membership list of the Central Committee Taiwan Work Leading Small Group. (Wen Wei Po, 26 December 2003) This has meant that even basic insight into these groups’ current roles and their membership requires painstaking compilation of the occasional references to them in PRC media.

Desde entonces, y hasta 1974, situamos la primera etapa de diálogos con China continental, que luego tendrá su epicentro en Taiwán dado el triunfo de la revolución comunista y el traslado “provisional” del gobierno nacionalista a Taipéi (1949). Con el ingreso de la República Popular China a la ONU (1971), así como su acercamiento a los EEUU, la mayoría de países latinoamericanos rompieron con Taiwán y normalizaron sus relaciones con Pekín. En el caso venezolano, esto ocurrió el 28 de junio de 1974; así, nuestro objetivo en este artículo es analizar esta segunda etapa de las relaciones sino-venezolanas. With the entry of the People's Republic of China to the UN (1971), as well as its rapprochement with the US, most Latin American countries broke with Taiwan and normalized their relations with Beijing.

Webster-Cheng, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2008 This dissertation explores the dynamics of political control of the arts and artistic freedom in the musical storytelling art of Suzhou tanci between 1949 and 1964, years marked by extensive revision of traditional performance repertoire, widespread creation of new, contemporary-themed stories, and composition of boldly innovative ballad music. I examine four stories and ballads either composed or revised during this time, looking broadly at the role of the State in the creative process. I consider the role of high-ranking officials whose personal comments to artists shaped their creative processes, and the role of societal political pressure placed on artists through political movements and shifting trends in the dramatic arts.
