Hyacinth,O.P. (Polish; ca. 1185 M August 5, 1257): Known as the "Apostle of the North", Hyacinth was the son of Eustachius Konski of the noblefamily of Odrowąż. He became a PolishDominicanpriest and missionary, and worked to reform women's monasteries in his native. He studied in Paris and Bologna and became a Doctor of Sacred Studies. While in, he wit- nessed a miracle performed byDominic of Osma, and became aDominican, along withCeslausand two attendants of the Bishop of Kraków Herman and Henry. Hyacinth gained a childlike and tender devotion to the Mother of God from St. Dominic. To her he attributed his success, and to her aid he looked for his salvation. The mosttold miracle about St. Hyacinth was of the Tartars’ siege of the city of Kiev. Hya- cinth was celebrating Mass, and he did not know of the onslaught of the Tartars until Mass ended. Without waiting to unvest, he took the ciborium in his hands and fled the church. It is recorded that as he passed by a statue of Mary he heard a voice say, "Hyacinth, my son, why dost thou leave me behind? Take me with thee and leave me not to mine enemies." Although the statue was made of heavy alabaster, Hyacinth took it in his arms and carried it away, along with the ciborium with the Holy Eucharist. It is for this miraculous moment that Saint Hyacinth is most often depicted. Worn out by his constant labors and vast journeys, Hyacinth spent the last few months of his life in a convent he had founded at Kraków . There on the Feast of St. Dominic in 1257, he fell ill. He was warned of his coming death and in spite of his condition, he attended Mass on the Feast of the Assumption. He was anointed at the altar, and died the same day in 1257. There are two popular legends about St. Hyacinth and pierogi (a Polish dumpling)None of them is a legend with Hyacinth feeding people with pierogi during the famine caused by the Tartar (Mongol) invasion in 1241 (see above). The second is about his visit on July 13, 1238 to toKościelec. During his visit a hailstorm broke out, destroying crops and leaving people with the prospect of poverty and famine in their future. Hyacinth told them to pray. The next day, the crops were restored like nothing happened. The people treated Hyacinth with pierogi made from those crops as a token of gratitude. There is an old saying that mentions calling for St. Hyacinth in hopeless circumstances from these two legendsN“St. Hyacinth with a Pierogi…” St. Hyacinth is buried at Holy Trinity Church in Kraków. His feast day is August 17. Attributes: holding a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with a monstrance or ciborium.
