    PATTO – the JOHN HALSEY INTERVIEW Patto, apart from being one of the finest (purely subjective, of course) bands this country ever produced, were not blessed with good fortune. Forever on the verge of making it really big, they broke up after six years of knocking on the door and finding no-one home. Subsequently, two of their number died while the other two were involved in a terrible car smash which left one with severe physical injuries and the other with severe mental problems. Drummer John Halsey is now the only Patto member who could possible give us an interview. Mike Patto and Ollie Halsall are both gone, while bassist Clive Griffiths apparently doesn't even recall being in a band! Despite bearing the scars of the accident (Halsey walks with a pronounced limp), John was only too pleased to submit to a Terrascopic grilling - an interview which took place in the wonderful Suffolk pub he runs with his wife Elaine. Bancroft and I spent a lovely afternoon and evening with the Halseys, B & B'd in the shadow of a 12th Century church cupboard and returned to London the next morning with one of the most enjoyable interviews either of us has ever done. John Halsey: I started playing drums because two mates who lived in my road in North Finchley (N. London), where I'm from, wanted to form a group. This was years and years ago, 1958, 1959. Me, with a microphone inside me guitar that used to go out through me Mum's tape recorder, and if you put 'Record' and 'Play' on together, it'd act like an amplifier.

  • CD Review: Bryan Ferry’S Avonmore
    CD Review: Bryan Ferry’s Avonmore Last Monday, former Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry released his 15th studio album, Avonmore. The album was produced by longtime Roxy Music/Ferry associate, Rhett Davies, but he also got some help from a long list of talented musicians, most notably Nile Rodgers of Chic (and everything lately) and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Nile Rodgers makes his influence known not only by his signature funky, choppy guitar sound that is featured in most of the songs, but an overall sleek tone to the songs and the production. The title track has a driving disco backbeat with impressive bass fills sprinkled throughout that can only be Flea. But occasionally the lushness goes a little too far. “A Special Kind of Guy,” for example, takes the smoothness to a sickly sweet parody level, complete with some tepid wah-wah guitar in the background. Perhaps the overproduction is due to an overblown cast of characters; on “Loop De Li” alone there appears Nile Rodgers, Johnny Marr, well-known blues guitarist Neil Hubbard, Sex Pistols axeman Steve Jones, session guitarist David Williams, and jazz legend Marcus Miller on bass, and that’s not even everybody playing a guitar. Ferry’s status as a UK national treasure is definitely secure, but it seems like he may be a little too focused on partying with rockstars. One of the elements (other than the top-tier musicians) that made Roxy Music so special in the ’70s was Ferry’s somehow-masculine cooing vocal technique. It’s undeniable that age isn’t the best thing for your vocals; unless you’re some kind of immortal weirdo like James Taylor, you probably won’t be hitting the high notes you did in your 20s when you’re 69 (Ferry’s age).

The musical backdrop for the show was appropriate for the countercultural subject matter, taking into account the popular genres of the time that were connected with such figures, and marrying them to other musical styles to help support the individual characters. Though popular styles had long been part of Broadway scores, it took more than a decade for rock to become a major influence in the commercial theater. The associations an audience had with rock music outside of a theater affected perception of the plot and characters in new ways and allowed for shows to be marketed toward younger demographics, expanding the audience base. Other shows contemporary to Hair began to include rock music and approaches as well; composers and orchestrators incorporated instruments such as electric guitar, bass, and synthesizer, amplification in the pit, and backup singers as components of their scores.

Annat var det på 70-talet när Roxy Musics musik och stilkänsla spreds som en löpeld över världen. ”För en tonåring i Dublin 1972 var det som om utomjordingar landat i TV-programmet Top Of The Pops” säger U2:s Bono i inledningen till More Than This, en timslång dokumentär om Roxy Music som nyligen släppts på DVD. Så var det nog. Inte nog med att bandets medlemmar var extremt klädda. Med sin popkonstmentalitet och vördnadsbefriade attityd till musikstilar bröt Roxy Music mot de flesta av rockens regler. Deras musik var en musikalisk motsvarighet till konstvärldens collage, på en och samma gång avig, elegant, depraverad, fantasieggande, poetisk, aggressiv, mystisk, dansant, genomtänkt, spontan och minutiöst producerad. Hårt rockande gitarrsolon kunde varvas med oväntade inslag av saxofon och oboe. I botten pumpade ett sanslöst driv signerat trummisen Paul Thompson, som hade Led Zeppelins John Bonham som hjälte – vilket hördes. Roxy Music införde glamour, dubbeltydigheter, postmodernism, experimentlusta och modemedvetenhet i en dittills jeans- och bluesdominerad rockvärd.
