During the winter season, it's especially important that we watch out for one another. In times of inclement weather, the Public Works crew is busy work - ing to keep the roads in our com - munity free from snow and ice for the protection of all residents. Shuniah Public Works thanks you for your cooperation and patience in the event of snowstorms. Working together we can have a safe and enjoyable winter season.

Driving Tips – Plan Ahead! Winter driving is a partnership – the Public Works Department does everything possible to clear and de-ice our streets and roads, but drivers have a responsibility to adjust their driving according to conditions. Weather conditions can change quickly, please allow plenty of time to reach your desti - nation when traveling in winter. • If at all possible, don’t drive during a storm. It’s much safer to stay at home and wait until con - ditions improve. • Remember that during a storm, major routes are cleared first and salted more frequently, while other roads and could be given a lower priority. • Watch out for ice, especially on bridges and in shaded areas. • Never assume that because the temperature is above zero that the roads are safe - road salt doesn’t work miracles, and is not effective below -10 degrees C. • Follow at a safe distance. It can take up to 12 times further to stop on snow and ice than on dry pave - ment. • Never pass a plow when it is ’ss clearing snow from the road. annnddddyyyy’’’ss Whiteout conditions are often SSSaaan BSar & Grill created in the front of plows which reduces visibility and in - creases the chance of an accident.
